- Tag along as we travel to the northern parts of Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe. En route we overnight at the iconic Lion & Elephant Motel and experience our first spectacular sunset in the park.

Awesome video
You simply can't drive through Babwe without stopping at the Lion and Elephant. Babwe beer and coke still the best. Was my parents choice of stop over in the late 60s when we drove down south. Wheelchair friendly. Still miss Babwe after almost 40 years.

19:42 Surely one of the best views in Zim. I have never been to this corner of the country and now wish I could go! Watching these videos of Africa is so therapeutic. Today I cancelled our SA holiday for October (from the UK) so need cheering up. It would be helpful if you provided some idea of the costs of camping in your videos. I believe it can be ridiculously expensive for what it is. Game viewing can also be so hit and miss. I have relatives in Bulawayo who went to Mana for a week and saw almost nothing! Borders on the incredible as its supposed to be game rich.
I am so sorry to hear that you had to cancel your trip. We now reside in SA and also had to cancel our Zim trip which would have been happening right now. It is also interesting to hear about the situation in Mana Pools. During all our visits up to 2012 it was very rewarding and game rich. We were supposed to be there now. Pity. Seems you have a love for the country and good knowledge of the country even though you no longer live there. Would you be able to do take small groups of families on 'guided tours'?
I think it would be a really wonderful experience for the families as you have so much knowledge and experience. The simplicity of it offers a real bush experience yet comfortable. That is a niche.
Would also be interesting if you did on how you prepare for such trips covering:
Vehicles that can take the terrain
Food how you manage to keep all that fresh and how much to take
Cooking equipment
Cameras
Activities on the tour itself
Camp sites you recommend
Times of the year to visit

When your kind arrived, there were 10 million elephants. Within a few years, you had almost poached and hunted them to extenction. The population recovered to 1 million in 1980, but now they say it is down to 400 000 again

Can't tell you how home sick this makes me! I couldn't figure out why the Lion & Elephant looked so differnt until you mentioned its thatch roof being replaced! It got flooded way back in the '70's too.
Hi Colin. Me too hey. We now live in South Africa and I can can tell you that it makes me homesick too! I miss that part of the world terribly! And the current Covid19 travel restrictions don't help. Stay well!
Do you have lions and elephants in England? I am not sure how you are relating animals that are found only in Africa, to sickness you feel for your country England.
@@mannastander7209 Your home is in England. They might have elephants and lions in their zoos which they stole from Africa. If you were to go there, your sickness should surely be ameliorated
When is the best time of the year to visit Gonarezhou?
Hi! I would say between April and September because it is much cooler then. I have visited in the summer months and it was enjoyable, but believe me, it can get incredibly hot!
They opted from thetched roof to asbestos roof????
Their country, they can do what they want. They even get rid of the roof, and have the house open to the sky. Worry about your own country, where we do not come to tell you what to do
I can see the pain in your eyes when you look around Lion and Elephant. I am guessing you were a farmer who was evicted off your farm in the early 2000's.
Hi. You have a keen eye! We were actually evicted much more recent, in 2014. Thanks for your interest, I truly appreciate it :-)
@@mannastander7209 I am sorry to hear that. I have been through a few evictions and my neighbors are currently being evicted. It just saddens me to see such a beautiful country go to waste. I just hope they leave the wildlife alone so that there will be a reason for people to return once in a while.
@@keagan.barratt I'm also sad to hear that you also had to go through evictions and that evictions are still taking place. Our wildlife numbers steadily decreased as the neighbouring farms were invaded and sadly the remaining wildlife on our farm was decimated as soon as we left. The wildlife in the national parks are still being looked after as many of our parks are now run in partnership with international funders such as the Frankfurt Zoological Society in the case of Gonarezhou.
@@mannastander7209 yes that is very true about the animals outside of the national parks. We had our own game reserve but once we were evicted all the animals were killed. Our last hope is the international help.
