i didn’t even know i liked d&d till i watched it, i always thought it was too complex and kinda weirded me out but i thought it was super fun watching y’all play. i would love to watch more
I LOVE the way you present your ART. Every person has their own take away. Just like visiting an art museum. I felt you were open minded and hearted in your treatment of all others in the video AND they treated each other as you did.
I cried the other day because i was the exact age while HP was out and everyone around me were reading the books and going to the book release parties but i wasnt allowed because of Christianity. I can read them now as an adult but i dont think i can ever get over not being apart of the initial craze 😢
same. i literally remember picking up the first HP book and starting to read it during a shopping trip, everyone I knew had already read it and was so into it, and I was so excited to read the story… and then when my mother saw what book it was, took it away and said it was “evil,” that it was satan trying to influence children’s minds 🙄😑 having fanatical religious (“evangelical christian”) parents took away so many experiences of fun and belonging all through my childhood and teenage years.
I just borrowed the books from friends and snuck and read them. At some point it became rather silly to me to think or believe anyone would get "possessed" from reading them.
Growing up in a Pentecostal then evangelical home, everything was satan or demons. It was exhausting and I really believe that it was a huge factor in my anxiety disorder. I’m happy to say that I now enjoy D&D, Zelda, and Harry Potter. 😊
I’m a long time d&d player. Like since I was 10 years old. I’m too young to have been affected by the actual satanic panic but in the 90’s when I started there was still the remnants of that era. My parents where catholics and they didn’t care. They may have been believers but they where also rational enough to realize it was a game. My dad read me the Tolkien books as a bedtime story and we where both excited when the lotr movies came out. He never played d&d but the fantasy genre was something we both enjoy and bonded over. We still do as he likes to play video games like Skyrim and dragon age and talk to me about it and watch me play them too. It’s not something I was ever told at home it was bad. My husband on the other hand was raised baptist and his mom was a little more concerned about it. He still played but it was more on the sly and with apprehension. Now as adults we have a room devoted to table top games and our hobby. It’s helped us meet each other, make friends and have a strong connection with a huge community. Honestly without d&d I would have never met my husband lol
I love how as I have grown from being a pastors kid, to deconstructing my own faith, Rhett and Link have grown also. I love these episodes that dive into things I believed when I was younger but now do not. I hope the people who become angry over these episodes don’t stop you from creating more like it!
This video was definitely good for me as a long time fan. The D&D video did leave me with some of the feelings you said many of your fans were having. I think the tough part is that in the video you're both kinda in a different "character", so it can be hard to determine what angle you're approaching the video from. I honestly had feelings that Demon Eraser was a fake persona, crazy to realize he was a genuine person. But having this explanation definitely makes me appreciate the video, your channel, and your content more. I understand you want to do interesting things that interest you. But i think the one takeaway is, we wanna see ya'll play more D&D! Invite David Hill, Stevie, Cotton Candy Randy, and the two goth kids who got pregnant and serve ya'll fast food lol The production and lighting you used during the actual tabletop experience was grade A, and I love the imaginary cut aways you'd do of Rhett and Link in character.
That's where I stop being so passive and accepting of other peoples' faith. He knows he had nothing to do with that experience, if it even happened at all. But say the tumor was misdiagnosed or something rational that happens. Now, in the future, if they have a medical issue, they might be inclined to reject treatment for faith healing instead! And god forbid that person doesn't make it, those faith "healers" and "exorcists" will then claim that the suffering persons faith just wasn't strong enough. And that is one of the most disgusting and cruel things you can say to a grieving family!
My husband and I at 45 yo play DnD with his childhood friends. It is such a fun time! I have also deconstructed and remember even being told as a kid not to watch the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. 🤦🏻♀️
@@bobbiedaniel9347 Yes, my merch is on its way! I’ve only been a fan for less than 3 weeks but I’m so obsessed that it’s almost all I think about. I thought that these types of feelings didn’t happen once you grew out of being an angsty teen and I’m being proven very wrong lol
This was so fun to watch! I am a brand new D and D player, just starting to create a character and learn stuff, so it's fun to watch others play. Even if my games won't be including an exorcist 😂
A) I really liked the D&D video - I've never played but not for reasons of faith. More logistics and stuff. B) Sitting here, listening in on this conversation is like sitting with people I respect, who are talking about things with emotional responsibility, experience in the world and who are just all around both nice and very interesting (oh yeah, and a bit zany at times). I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate it. Thanks.
I loved the dnd episode. It was PAINFULLY awkward which isn’t always my thing but you both mediated it all so well. Would watch a full mythical campaign
Honestly, I stopped watching the video because I'm one of those guys that doesn't like uncomfortable situations... But I MADE myself deal with it and watch it. And there was a lot of laughs and quite interesting as someone who has never played DnD.
I think what Link said around 21:53 missed the mark a bit. I don't think the people uncomfortable with Demon Guy wanted him to be "made fun of" or "torn apart", I just think we didn't want him to be able to present his ideas unchallenged on such a huge platform. It felt deeply uncomfortable watching a guy be able to say that depression or nut allergies are devil's work and have Rhett and Link nod along and go "hmmm okay". Does it matter who those ideas can negatively affect? They don't need to be challenged or torn apart, they just need to be ignored and not broadcast to millions of people struggling with physical or mental health in ways that someone is trying to swindle them on. As far as D&D fans, they really didn't need to worry we'd think they "weren't representing us" or making fun of us 😂there's basically no wrong way to play D&D and when you're a new player the most common reaction to that from the community is just excitement.
My absolute favorite energy from Rhett is when he talks about stuff like this ❤. This needs to be its own channel called Parking Lot Pickles because religion definitely put us in a pickle for waaaay to long.
YOU MEAN WHEN HE TALKS ABOUT HIMSELF. BELIEVE ME HE LOVES IT TOO. HAS TO MAKE EVERY SINGLE SITUATION ABOUT HIM. “I . I. I ME ME ME ME I I I ME I ME I ME I ME” IS EVERY OTHER WORD OUT OF HIS MOUTH
I REALLY appreciate you calling out Christian missionary work as white supremacy. Thank you for speaking up about that I've always thought the same and I'm glad to hear someone else saying it, especially with such a platform. Thank you.
interesting to hear different ways of looking at things! interesting to hear what you think, and read comments on what others think. I personally think it was a really fun episode and good to follow up with the podcast.
32 year atheist, here. I was 16 when reality was exhibited to me in 1991. The first problem in the argument is trying to rationalize that the bible storybook is a "true story." My mom was the liaison for the American Atheists show in our metro area in the 90's.
@@katc2040 I believe both are constructs of people. These people seek control over the masses. People still believe in "god" because they feel like they have the need to have something watch over them. They also believe in the devil because they are too ashamed to take responsibility for their own actions. And let me be clear, if you read the bible, it sounds like "god" has done far worse things then the devil. For example, if you take the Noah story, "god" seems to take pleasure in drowning an untold number of innocent people and animals. Not to mention that if that story is true we are all off spring of Noah and his kids. But now the bible is just loaded with stories of incest it seems.
I have complete trust in you guys so I had a good understanding of your intentions going into the video. I respect the way you presented and interacted with Brian. It was clear in the editing and how you talked to him that you weren't picking sides or trying to make any judgments or statements about him and his beliefs. I was very uncomfortable watching the first half with him and I'll probably skip that part entirely if I ever choose to rewatch the video, but that's purely due to who I am and my life experiences, not you guys at all. I did love the entire D&D game though, including Brian's inclusion and commentary. It was so much fun and I'll for sure rewatch the full game on the Society. I'm glad you guys are staying dedicated to your creative visions, being open to new experiences, and taking risks. Whatever the comments say and what "sides" people are taking I hope you're proud of your work and continue to play and explore on the Rhett & Link channel. Love ya guys!
I genuinely thought the demon slayer guys videos were satire when you showed the clips from his tiktok lol, it wasnt until you met him and got further into it that I realized he was actually serious 😳
Honestly, I don't think he is even serious, seems to be playing a role that makes him money to fund his passions; I think that might fit the definition of scam artist although I don't think he is necessarily doing it out of malice.
about to listen to this now but popping in first to say i really enjoyed the d&d video!! i loved the exorcist guy being involved and everything, for some reason people seemed to miss the point in the comments but a bunch of us still thought it was great. i'd be down for more of that stuff, love listening to people's beliefs that are totally different from my own B)
I'm a lesbian but Rhett going off about missionary work being white supremacy is so hot I had to leave a comment. Also I knew he was a Dan McClellan girlie. I would love to hear him guest on data over dogma, would be so cool
As someone who still considers myself a Christian (although I've been a bit less committed, mostly due to chronic oversleeping and missing church if I'm being honest-- maybe that's the "depression demons" at work lol), I've never felt you were disrespectful to Christians. I also totally understand your decision to leave evangelical Christianity, which I've personally never understood as a daughter of scientists and someone who would be considered socially progressive by most; I respect you both so much and your decisions, and how you're open minded and respectful even around someone as "out there" as a demon hunter. 😂 I personally loved the video, it was a clever and odd angle (the kind of "odd" that I originally came to the Rhett and Link channel for), and 100% am on board with more D&D videos.
I really really hope yall upload a full like one shot or campaign yall really got into a character despite the many hurdles in your way. Like having a character made for you makes sense for this video, but with how well you did with something that last minute I imagine yall really making your own character could be really fun. Not to mention the demonologist kept stopping you from delving too far into character which was fun but I think a regular one could be better.
Christian here and I so appreciate the way you guys discuss your process and perspective so openly and genuinely. If we all approached hot topics with this level of respect and earnestness, we'd live in a better world. So thank you. And as a D&D player (more Pathfinder now), it drives me absolutely bonkers when D&D is labeled with such uncompromising stigma. Like, could it be used to entertain the demonic? Sure. But so can almost anything if one was so inclined. Don't declare all spice lovers masochists just because you can't handle the heat. Anyway, looking forward to watching your D&D video.
I think when Link said he believes what he wants to believe, that's pretty much the full conclusion you could draw about everyone. One person wants to believe demons are real and they have power over them. Another wants to believe demons aren't real. Another wants to believe demons are real and everyone should be wary of them at all times. Another wants to believe we can't possibly know if demons are real or not. We will all continue to believe whatever we want unless or until an internal or external pressure changes what we want to believe. For some that's hard evidence seen with their own eyes, for others it's stories from friends or things written in ancient texts or scientific papers, and for some it's just a feeling. Beliefs are just thoughts we choose and I think it's important to realize that about ourselves and others.
I couldn't continue watching the video after the guy said Link's tattoo was cursed with such absolute certainty. Just didn't sit well with me. Would've loved to see you guys tackle DND without a guy like that by your sides though! :)
The exorcist video was actually my first introduction to Rhett and Link. I loved it lol. Also, my step mom is one of those people who thing D&D and Harry Potter are demonic and witchcraft.
My mom's a Jehovah's Witness. One time her mp3 player was quietly playing while it was supposed to be charging. She wondered why it was on. I said sarcastically, "it could've been a demon". She in all seriousness, "IT COULD HAVE BEEN!" Really? The only things on your player are an audiobook bible and discussions about it. If a demon wants you to hear that, you've just convinced yourself you're in a bad religion.
On the Topo Chica conversation: Does anybody else feel like all the people trying to ban drag and deny the existence of trans people might have some kind of zombie brain worms? It feels like all that shit came out of nowhere.
I really enjoyed the D&D video. I thought it was fair - no one point was presented as "better" than the others - and I enjoyed R&L's commentary throughout. The Dungeon Master guy was FANTASTIC. I loved him. The Demonologist guy was pretty cool too! The whole video seemed, to me, like a little documentary and reminded me of the old Commercial Kings videos. If I could add a criticism, I would have liked to have had a "wrap up" at the end of the that video. I thought there was a great intro and middle but I would have liked to have more at the end. Maybe R&L's overall POV and maybe from the Demonologist guy and the players. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed! I look forward to the next R&L video!
I appreciate how GMM is less personal in terms of content, because my son loves watching with us and I know it’s always going to be clean. And if there’s an inappropriate joke it’s vague and goes straight over his head. We are Christian so I appreciate the clean fun from a moral standard. I always watch these EB videos to train my apologetics muscle - I’m sure y’all will love that. Haha I will be praying for you whether you like it or not!

I'm a somewhat recent D&D player (playing for over a year), but watching you guys play D&D and get right into it was a lot of fun. Honestly I started tuning out Brian entirely lol. And I'd love to see y'all play for a video. I went into the video worried that you guys were going to just present this "demonologist" and his wacky ideas kind of on their own. But I thought you two (and the other D&D players) did a pretty good job of evening it out with reactions to the crazy things he was saying. Overall, I don't really agree with the idea of just letting someone espouse harmful beliefs without pushback, and I think Brian's beliefs, as "out there" as they are, can potentially be harmful. But at the same time I think he made such a fool of himself that most reasonable people would see right through it all. I dunno, those are just my thoughts. I found the video itself really interesting (and uncomfortable lol), and I loved seeing you guys get so into the roleplaying aspect of D&D.
Rhett if you are ever in Maine again come see me. I had a near death experience : crossed over and returned but retained the ability to connect to the energetic realm. All the demons😢
I hope that if/when you guys ever play D&D in the future, you have Lemar to DM for you again. He's great
He did such a good job, that would've been so difficult given and he took what could've been an awkward situation and made it really fun.
As someone that comes from a reglious household, thank you for being so open about this. I respect you guys so much for how open and honest you are. You explain things so well and it's so nice to have someone I respect and admire talk about these things. Thanks for being my internet dads
I have to admit that at the start of the DnD video I was pretty disappointed that you guys gave that wacko a platform but after watching the whole thing I think you did a great job.
i didn’t even know i liked d&d till i watched it, i always thought it was too complex and kinda weirded me out but i thought it was super fun watching y’all play. i would love to watch more
That D&D episode is very memorable to me simply because it felt like a reality television show, if it were genuine.
Great chat and the video was really interesting. Also on another note I would love to see a GMM D&D show. 😂
How do your parents feel about your de-religioning as adults? I've been curious about that each time you talk about it.
Me too. They all seem to be very accepting people. ❤️
Rhett talks a little bit about it here. th-cam.com/video/Pis_cFER-x4/w-d-xo.html
I love how as I have grown from being a pastors kid, to deconstructing my own faith, Rhett and Link have grown also. I love these episodes that dive into things I believed when I was younger but now do not. I hope the people who become angry over these episodes don’t stop you from creating more like it!
As a dnd player and someone who knew all of the theology brian used, it was very funny and frustrating when he would get parts wrong
Could you give an example or two by chance? I’m not into DnD or theology, but I’d like to know what you’re talking about.
Invite David Hill, Stevie, Cotton Candy Randy, and the two goth kids who got pregnant and serve ya'll fast food lol
The production and lighting you used during the actual tabletop experience was grade A, and I love the imaginary cut aways you'd do of Rhett and Link in character.
You probably shoulda been like "dude, you did not heal a brain tumor..."
As someone who just got into the band Ghost, this is a really interesting discussion and I appreciate it a lot, thanks for talking about this
OMG same I'm literally wearing my first Ghost Tshirt right now and I'm obsessed with them 😅
@@bobbiedaniel9347 Yes, my merch is on its way! I’ve only been a fan for less than 3 weeks but I’m so obsessed that it’s almost all I think about. I thought that these types of feelings didn’t happen once you grew out of being an angsty teen and I’m being proven very wrong lol
It was a really fun video! I always love the RL channel vids.
Thanks.
Same Judith
With the new power of d&d lore, "lost causes of bleak creek" vol.2 is gonna be crazy
"I haven't asked Satan his pronouns" made me cackle
Having them do a critical role one shot would be so fun
The D&D episode was crazy entertaining, I would love to see Rhett and link play some more!
8:00 I love link rolling his eyes LMAO🫶🫶🫶
I appreciate your thoughtful discussion about this. Good on you guys.
I REALLY appreciate you calling out Christian missionary work as white supremacy. Thank you for speaking up about that I've always thought the same and I'm glad to hear someone else saying it, especially with such a platform. Thank you.
Omg link looks sooooo hot with a beard. Someone pls tell his wife to throw out all his razors! Lol
Yessss when I watched the new video I couldn’t waaaait to hear about it on the podcast!
interesting to hear different ways of looking at things! interesting to hear what you think, and read comments on what others think.
This kind of conversation makes me really frustrated that I can't just talk to you both like in person!
The Demon Eraser video was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. 😂
Loved the video, really glad you guys explored this. Also: I loved the resolution for Link with the voicemail at the end 😭
I find it hilarious that we are in the year 2023 and people still think demons exist.
People still believe in God 🤷♀️ most everyone I've met believes that you can't believe in God and not the devil
@Hunter Agree and don't forget bigfoot.
I love to see them do more fun normal things that hardcore Christian’s think are evil and demonic💀
when i got the notification for the D&D video i was SO EXCITED!!! Y’all should play more d&d and post it!!
Why they coming after Topo Chica now 😭. She is fabulous. Keep being fabulous, boys.
I'm a huge d&d fan. I'd love to see some more d&d content in the future
I loved it and I watched the video while I cooked my dinner. The footage in character was the bomb 😊
I genuinely thought the demon slayer guys videos were satire when you showed the clips from his tiktok lol, it wasnt until you met him and got further into it that I realized he was actually serious 😳
Yea💀
me too!!! i seriously thought he was a paid actor at first 😭
Yeah, as he kept talking 😅
Honestly, I don't think he is even serious, seems to be playing a role that makes him money to fund his passions; I think that might fit the definition of scam artist although I don't think he is necessarily doing it out of malice.
about to listen to this now but popping in first to say i really enjoyed the d&d video!! i loved the exorcist guy being involved and everything, for some reason people seemed to miss the point in the comments but a bunch of us still thought it was great. i'd be down for more of that stuff, love listening to people's beliefs that are totally different from my own B)
I love when you guys go out in to the world and do shit 💯 😅
I scored a GMM mug from a fb friend because her daughter no longer likes GMM because R&L are no longer Christian. Win for me.
Wow that was a score for you! And honestly I have so many questions for the fb friends daughter
D&D is a deeply emotional and story focused game when you give it the time to evolve. It’s such an incredible experience and so much more than a game
I'm a lesbian but Rhett going off about missionary work being white supremacy is so hot I had to leave a comment. Also I knew he was a Dan McClellan girlie. I would love to hear him guest on data over dogma, would be so cool
LMFAO real
Need a full dnd campaign with Reth and Link
I really really hope yall upload a full like one shot or campaign yall really got into a character despite the many hurdles in your way. Like having a character made for you makes sense for this video, but with how well you did with something that last minute I imagine yall really making your own character could be really fun. Not to mention the demonologist kept stopping you from delving too far into character which was fun but I think a regular one could be better.
Hey mythical beasts ❤ i saw demons and i came runnin lol
I love this! I have always appreciated your open minds🥰 Love you both😘🥰🥰
Christian here and I so appreciate the way you guys discuss your process and perspective so openly and genuinely.
Y’all have got to play more D&D there is almost limitless content to make with it
"oop, there's a demon here, shit's hittin the fan, I gotta start using my blowtorch"
-Link
I couldn't continue watching the video after the guy said Link's tattoo was cursed with such absolute certainty. Just didn't sit well with me. Would've loved to see you guys tackle DND without a guy like that by your sides though! :)
Awesome podcast guys
This was a great episode as was the Rhett and Link channel video!
Ooh this is going to be great!!
Back in the 1970s, instead of D&D and Harry Potter the hot spot issue was Ouji Board and Tarot Cards.
Would love to see you guys play DnD without an exorcist there next time! Just a really cool DM, I wonder what kind of stories would come out of this!
On the Topo Chica conversation: Does anybody else feel like all the people trying to ban drag and deny the existence of trans people might have some kind of zombie brain worms? It feels like all that shit came out of nowhere.
I LOVED the video, it gave me major Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse vibes and I love it
Jordan Klepper cracks me up!
I think it was a successful episode in the way you didn't need to outright call Bryan out but just by showing him it spoke for itself
Haha I will be praying for you whether you like it or not!
here are some of my faves ive learnt from many many crosswords 💪💕
opprobrium (criticism)
ephemera (stuff, but non committal)
anathema (something that someone hates So Much)
vicissitude (change)
otiose (useless)
perissilogy (the use of big grand words, but with a feel of indulgence instead of superiority)
ceilidh (irish vibe sesh?)
aubade (poetic dawn serenade)
paginate (to number sheets of paper)
palaver (boring thing)
also i learnt about the Marten and the Arroyo, one is a weasel, the other is a geographical formation, both are american :)
The supernatural is closer to scientific experience than you might think. I’d welcome the chance to speak with you and just see what you feel after our conversation.
I am a professional DM (Dungeon Master/Game Master) and one of the groups I run is for troubled teens. It is useful to help them express themselves in ways that are void of Real life consequences. I Also have been in talks with a local prison to run a game for well behaved inmates under supervision. i highly suggest playing it more. Its great fun, allows growth and is a great cobarative story telling game.
I'd definitely watch a real dnd session with you two no doubt. 😂
39:36 Look up Maasai tribe and their jumping contest. That what came to mind when Rhett tells this story.
You both need to read Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss. Made so much sense and was beyond helpful in my spiritual journey!
Having watched this long after watching the D&D episode I'm getting a laugh at the idea that they didn't want it to be a prank video....when it totally came across as a prank video 😂
I wholeheartedly second Rhett's recommendation.
really appreciate these videos about faith and american christianity
