    It took 12 weeks to get my Multibit, due to supply chain issues. It was definitely worth the wait. I find it superior to the ESS-based Modi 3 and JDS Labs DAC+. The Multibit is smoother and more analog-like, with great instrumental separation and soundstage depth.
    There is a sense of “ease” to the sound, which is free from glare and hardness. The bass is also bold and natural-sounding. One thing I found is that it takes some time for it to “settle in.” It should cook for at least 1-2 hrs, before serious listening.

      Yeah, mine sounded a little weird at first but it’s recommended that you keep it powered on. I checked it the next day and it sounded so much better. This goes for all of the Schiit Multibit dacs. I believe Mike Moffat said to leave them on for best performance.

      1 hr warm up period indeed. As an added bonus, put a paperback book or something on top of the unit. It will give off a holographic or more open sound stage.

    • @Jon-nz3dm
      @Jon-nz3dm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@tonymosley6951 I can't tell if this is a joke or not LOL. I do wish people would look into the psychology of audio experiences and our horrible memory of sound. So many people act like they hear a difference between cheap DAC's when they aren't even A/Bing them with level matched output, they're only stating what they think they remember the other sounding like. Crystals on your amp, expensive cables/interconnects, paperback book on your DAC, all do not change sound.

    • @tonymosley6951
      @tonymosley6951 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Jon-nz3dm May seem funny 😂, but the whole point is making the dac run hotter than it is
      to get the effect. The guts inside rely on a certain temperature to sound it's best thus the 1 hr warm-up period. Just for fun, I run it occasionally. Don't know the longevity of the device, but the effect is there within 15-30 minutes after it runs on an increased temperature load. By the way, I have a schiit gungnir mb that takes 3 DAYS to warm up. Otherwise it is just dull and lifeless on a cold start. Thought something was really wrong with my system till after that 3rd day. Happy Listening 🔊.

    You can't beat Schiit. The sheer amount of money you are paying most other companies for name tag/excessive profit margins/advertising/bells and whistles, immediately puts Schiit ahead, add to that Schitt's extremely good cutting edge designs and yeah, you really can't beat them. Not without spending literal truckloads of money. I had gone through many dacs before I found Schiit. Once I had a Schiit though, I never changed brand. I simply upgraded the model of Schiit I owned as I could.

    I managed to grab one used, and so glad I did. Unreal how good this sounds, it is everything I have been looking for out of my little audiophile system. Legit makes a lot of my digital music sound like their vinyl counterparts.

  • @1mctous

    I heard the Multibit difference from the first note. It greatly reduced the amount of treble hash and noise so that my brain didn't have to filter it. (The Eitr DDC reduced it even further.) I could relax with digital for the first time ever in December 2016 shortly after Schiit started its production.

    Was looking at this one hard. But I couldn't take the wait time. Just got the modius. What a great DAC. Thunderous but controlled bass. Nice sound staging slightly warm but still resolving in the highs. It sounds analog. My CDs are giving my vinyl a run for their money. But I'm getting the Mani 2 today so....

      I agree as well. That Modi+ truly transformed the WiiM Mini (optical out) and Onkyo CD changer (coaxial out) switchable on the Modi+ into a Denon Receiver CD input and running Polks off the 100W/ch power amp on a Rec Room stereo system! Blew the freaking doors off the 16 bit converted sound coming off the analog out on the Mini, and even a bit better than the internal DAC circuitry on the Onkyo. Not sure why. I’m using a 6’ long, less than $10 coaxial cable.

    I bought the Ifi Signature DAC on your recommendation from a previous video to pair with the Elekit TU-8600S 300B Tube amp I recently built. I'm also building a pair of the CSS Criton 2TDX Tower speakers for the TU-8600 and for the front left and right speakers in a 5.1 surround system with my Yamaha receiver using an Amp switcher. I am pretty happy with the way the Ifi DAC sounds with my tube amp and Yamaha receiver. I wanted a DAC with Bluetooth capability so that was one of the main reasons I went with the Ifi DAC instead of the Modi. I get the impression from your comments that I could spend 2 or 3 times as much on a DAC on not hear a discernable difference between them. Thanks for the videos!

    Randy, the Modi Multibit (MIMBY in Schiithead shorthand vernacular) has been my go to DAC for my speaker and headphone listening. I bought the original v1 MIMBY about four years ago. Liked it at first but it sounded muffled in the lower and upper midrange compared to Schiit’s original Modi and my Project Pre-Box S2 Digital DAC. A while ago, year Schiit announced the v2 (current model) version was available and that the original version could be upgraded with Mike Moffat’s rewritten software filter chip. After installing the easily installed $35 replacement chip sent from Schiit, I was rewarded with much improved sound in the areas where the original was somewhat lacking. Now my v2 upgraded MIMBY is heads and tails superior to my Delta Sigma DACs for all the reasons you mentioned. Thanks for the great review, Randy. Pity Schiit Audio is suffering supply train issues with many of their most popular products. It’s a great company building affordable, well made American HiFi gear.

    I had the regular modi for a couple years and was quite happy with it. Then after upgrading some of my other equipment, including speakers, I decided to get the modi MB. Wow, I was blown away at the increased detail and separation of instruments and soundstage. Deeper, wider and taller soundstage with space around the individual instruments. Just recently added the Saga+ and now things sound absolutely spectacular.

    Just contacted Schiit (as of 18 March 2022) and inquired about why the Modi Multibit is no longer listed on their website. Received an immediate reply about the total lack of availability of different chips. For example, I was told that Schiit placed an order for a variety of chips back in May 2021 - none of which have arrived as yet. As a result, the Multibit series will be delayed indefinitely. I was also notified that a ballpark guess scenario is that, maybe, the Modi Multibit might be available in another 14 months or so. Bummer...

    Agree. Long time ago i saw a good review on iiwi and i decided to try it. I compared vs the Modi 3. IMO the M3 is dynamic an bright on music, good for Rock, rap, disco, R&D, techno, Electronic music. The MMbit , the treble is a “little” less than the M3 but is much better on the resolution and presentation of the music. The bass has more body than the M3, you noticed the difference immediately. The mids are beautiful and matching this on a tube Amp is a plus (i did). IMO good for Jazz, new age , instrumental, Solo Singers, orchestra. Recommend!

    I've been using the Modi Multibit for five years and this video just cured my upgraditis. I only wish it had a remote so I could switch between my TV and my Pi streamer without getting up. Fortunately, my kids love to "press the big silver button" when I give them permission. I put a Darko-style aluminum doorstop on top so it wouldn't slide all over the place.

I then swapped my powered for the inexpensive Sony’s. So glad I found your channel. Only issue i have is with the SMSL AD18…only works w/ optical cable. The other inputs have a lot of noise.

    One big difference to note between multibit (r2r) dacs and other dacs is that the r2r is a completely custom design made and tuned by Mike Moffet of Schiit whereas an AKM, ESS, Burr-Brown based dac is just a plug and play type design where the DAC maker just builds the architecture around the predesigned chip of choice.

And spot on with what you think, I hate using the term musical but it just sounded more natural strings and vocals were top notch and like you said the top end just sounded less harsh than the Topping and IFi. Glad you liked it ! It sucks that the next version will be delayed. As they were going to add their unison USB to the next version. And I will have that one too. Give it a spin with the USB on some headphones that was it primary use for me.

    You know, as you say yourself, audio memory is terrible. So, maybe NOT make descriptions based on memory. Do everyone a favor and A-B these DACs, Amps, etc. Get yourself an audio switcher, if you don't already have one, and use the switcher to A-B for all your reviews. In the back of your mind you need to keep the mantra, "People will spend their hard-earned money on what I recommend." Randy, have you ever gone back to the Sim for comparison, now that you have had more experiences ? I spent nearly a year trying different amps for my Klipsch Cornwall IV'S. Started with a vintage Marantz seperates system, model 3300 & 250. I also had a Schiit Saga and Aegir, Rotel RA-1572 MK2, Pro-ject Stereo Box DS2 and a Sansui AU-990. Now, I use a turntable for my main playback, and don't use a fac at all, yet. But I settled on an older Simaudio, the Moon I5LE, the standard I5 can be had for around $1200. The Moon brought life and energy to the Speakers that no other amp was able to touch. Fast , and full bodied. I was considering upgrading to a newer Sim for the DAC.

    Nice comparison of the modi DACs. Next time, I would use a tone on CD for comparison of DACs with different output levels by running tone on a burned CD and making sure that it is the same 0 dB on a meter. This way you can truly have the proper sound levels to compare!

    Actually listening to this on a Modi Multibit lol. Bought the MB along with a Modius to compare the two. Didn't end up sending either back since I don't have another balanced DAC but the multibit is definitely my favorite. Also have a smsl sanskrit 10th which is much closer but I still think the multibit edges out the win. Currently using a Vidar amp with my pervious amp a Crown drivecore 2 in my kitchen system lol. Honestly I can hardly tell the difference between the two even when ABing. Not sure if I've just ended up with two amps that sound very similar but more often than not I hear a lot more of difference in source gear like DACs.
    Honestly I think the modi MB doesn't deserve the hate it gets for not having as good of performance numbers but almost no multibit DAC measurements compare to delta sigma. But holy crap does the sucker take a long time to warm up and reach peak performance. I was still hearing pretty drastic differences even after running it for 3 days. Hence I never turn it off and considering true R2R DACs have small resistance value changes until a steady operating temperature is achieved I don't think its a good idea to ever turn off a multibit DAC.

    • @RdandTrk1
      @RdandTrk1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Modius. I know you said you prefer the Modi Multibit to the Modius, but how do those two compare? What are you noticing as the main differences? I previously owned a Modi 3+/Magni Heresy stack and "upgraded" to an Asgard 3/Modius stack. I find the latter to be on the warm side and a little thick. I find myself prefering the more analytical sound of the smaller stack. I'm wondering if changing DACs would help bring back some of the analytical sound? I'm just curious about your thoughts as someone who owns both the Modius and ModiMB.

    • @cheapaudioman
      @cheapaudioman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nice

    • @gatticusfpv3174
      @gatticusfpv3174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RdandTrk1 Yeah no problem. I'm not super knowledgeable/experienced and as always people tend to perceive sound in very subjective ways. To me the Modius sounds much more analytical and almost crystalline compared to the Modi MB. That lends me to suspect the warm thick sound is actually coming from the Asgard. Since the Modius is more neutral you can hear the natural sound of the Asgard a little better.
      It not a huge difference but the MB seems a bit warmer and the high end details seem a little more smeared and grainy than the Modius. Its not in a bad way. It sounds a bit more tube like. And this seems to be be born out in measurements. The multibit has a lot of 2nd order harmonics going on like tubes. However I wouldn't say the Modius is the most analytical/transparent DAC out there. So if you want to bring back a more analytical sound I'd probably suggest swapping the amp out to something like a THX head amp that has built in distortion compensation. It might be a bit too analytical at that point but that's going to come down to personal preference.
      The Magni Hersey was designed to compete more directly with THX amps so that'd probably be the place to start. Then if its a bit too sterile swap the DAC out for something a tad less analytical.
      With my speakers (JBL Studio 530) and amp (Schitt Vidar) the Modi Multibit just seems to render a bit more of a realistic soundstage with sounds in space. I have no problem using EQ and am pretty tone def so I care a lot more about soundstage and imaging than tone. The MB is ever so slightly narrower in soundstage but I find the imaging is also a tad more 3D. As for tone the biggest difference I've heard is that flutes sound a bit more crystalline on the Modius while the MB has some more harmonic distortion going on which I find a bit more pleasant. All of this is pretty slight but I hope it helps.

      @@gatticusfpv3174 Thanks a ton for the reply! That makes perfect sense to me and sounds like an awesome place to start. I like the Asgard and I suspect I'm probably pairing it with headphones that are also warm, giving me what I've heard Randy call "extra butter", LOL! Thus it would pair very well with analytical headphones which I don't own any of yet. I think I just may go after the THX ONE, and keep both! Thanks a ton for your time and input.

    Hi Randy thanks for the great review. I'm a little confused because I saw your review on the ares 2 dac and heard other reviews how good they are
    And you even recommend if buying a $330 to $500 dac maybe save up and get the ares 2 instead. So I reallly checked them out but they have gone up in price considerably to almost $1500 with custom and taxes. So I think I will stick with the modi multibit and Vali +2 hybrid tube ear phone amp.which should give me a little warmer sound. I will then save for the Ares 2 maybe 2 years down the road and purchase that. Or maybe Schiit by then will have something to replace the Ares 2 but a little less expensive and made in US. I appreciate all the advice. Do you have anything available like buying you a cup of coffee or donation through patrion. To show my appreciation. Thanks again Bo Davis
