    Leah, many, many thanks for this video! I bought the Qzone pro with the 15R Pro. I also already have the leader cloths but, had not figured out how to use them so, this helps. The videos from Grace don't go into this level of detail and it's truly what I need to get started. I bought the ruler base and the foot assortment but, don't have any rulers yet. Since this is my first attempt at any sort of "long-arm" quilting, I'm just a smidge intimidated by it all; but, I really want to learn it. I hope you'll be putting out more of these videos for us!!

      Congratulations on getting your new long arm! I got one for Christmas with the Qnique 19 machine. It was very intimidating at first! I had a big piece of felt and thought that would make a good practice piece, so that’s what I used for some practice. It saved on fabric and batting too! Lol. Well, long story short, once I got over the fear, we have become fast friends. I can already see improvements in my quilting . I’ve completed four lap size quilts and thought they turned out pretty good for my skill level. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and just go for it. I actually bought several yards of felt for the purpose of practicing my quilting. It’s worked out really well. I’m disabled and have back issues and can’t believe how much easier it is to use as a posed to free motion.
      I know once you get started you will love your new machine as much as I do mine. And I agree, Leah does a much better job regarding education. I wouldn’t have gotten my frame together without her help. Lol. Something else I do differently regarding the leader cloths: I used the trimmings off of completed quilts and used them as leader cloths and SEWED them to the quilt I’m ready to start quilting. I found it easier and faster than pinning the leader cloths. I found them to be “unwieldy” when quilting a smaller quilt.
      I wish you the best of luck in your new quilting journey. You CAN do this!

      I have the same setup and was also intimidated until I took a class at a local shop that sells & services Grace longarms. Now I can't find enough time to use my 15R Pro!

      Yes, this is a weekly series focused on the Free Motion Starter Kit and it should help you out a lot! I'm learning as I go so we'll all get better each week.

    Great video. I’ve had a QZone frame for 2 years and still learned something new!

    What a neat little kit! I may have to purchase one. I also appreciate the lesson on pinning. I did struggle with trying to keep things “straightish” when pinning those large leader clothes. But I found using the extra long leader cloths on a smaller quilt too unwieldy to deal with. I spent two hours trying to pin a lap size quilt and felt like a pin cushion before I was done. As an experiment, I tried sewing the trimmed off pieces from past quilts and then used that as leader cloths. It actually worked out very well! I haven’t tried to quilt a really big quilt yet, but I’m working up to it.
    Your video lessons have been extremely helpful in learning how to switch from freemotion quilting to long arm quilting. I’ve now got four quilts under my belt on my new longarm and am very pleased with my progress. I may never go back to free motion! 😂
    Thanks again for all your help!

      Yeah, I caught myself letting the quilt top slip on both sides and realized I needed to grab a ruler. Yep, scrap fabric can work too, but I love having the dashed line to pin to. You are super welcome - enjoy!

    Love your videos! I was still basting my quilts and then loading them onto my hoop frame because handling them was challenging. Your magnet set-up is genius. BTW, your video on installing the stitch regulator was so good I don’t think I could have installed mine without it. I wasn’t sure if the frame was a the right solution for me but seeing your use of it gives me more confidence. Thank you so much. Happy Quilting.

    Thanks for the refresher. I moved recently, and haven't had a chance to use my frame in a while.

      I hope you'll give this a try and see if it helps! I really like prepping everything standing because I work faster and can smooth all the layers out before popping it on my frame.

    This is an excellent video with some very specific tips that will enable me to finally use my hoop frame for the first time. Reminder to all of us newer users - there's no BASTING the backing, batting and quilt-top together anymore - this hoop frame pulls it taut, so all we're doing is pinning the leaders ( for narrow or short quilts) and clamping the edges (that never dawned on my when I bought it.

      @LeahDay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, indeed! I like layering everything standing because I can smooth out everything and then pop it onto the frame. No more pinning beyond the top rows!

      I tried pinning without basting and I had terrible folds and tucks on my backing cloth after the first pass. It was a large throw size quilt. I took it apart and spray basted it and had much better results.@@LeahDay

    I have a Cutie which I recently purchased. Do you load the quilt the same way? Or is there a video for the cutie?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a Cutie frame is a style of Hoop Frame so it loads exactly the same way.

      Terry, me too! The brain switch from moving the material to moving the machine is "interesting" LOL. Good luck and happy stitching.

    The pins used to pin the fabric to the leader cloth - are they a special type? Do you have a link?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically these are sold as Longarm Pins - they are thicker and longer than your normal pins. Unfortunately I'm between suppliers and don't have a link, but you can easily find something that works online.

    I purchased the leader cloth and it came with three widths. Which do I use for my hoop frame?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you purchased the wrong leader cloth for your frame. If it has Velcro stitched to one edge of each cloth, that is leaders designed for rolling rail frames. You need to return that for Hoop Frame Leader Cloth which includes the thick end shown in this video.

    • @cherylwilliams42
      @cherylwilliams42 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ouch! And, drat! I’ve had it for a while, not sure where I purchased it but will check. If I can’t find I’ll see if another quilter is interested in taking it off of my hands. Thanks. Now, I purchased my machine used so I didn’t get that practice piece and batting, also why I purchased leader cloth which turned out to be wrong,. Is there a place that I can purchased the leader with practice pieces that would normally come with a new machine?

      Never mind. I found it on the web site. Thanks.

    If you use the leader cloth for a small quilt, does the remainder get wasted?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I don't recommend cutting it. Watch to the end of the video and you'll see how I slot it through the arm of the machine and the extra leader just drapes off both ends of the frame. Alternatively you can sew a new leader the length you need if you mostly make baby quilts.
