  • UPDATE: LARGE 1:8 SCALE AV-8B HARRIER VTOL PROTOTYPE (Designed and flown by Joel Vlashof)
This amazing prototype was designed and built by Joel Vlashof. It is 1:8 scale. 6 KG flying weight. Powered by a 130mm EDF system from Schubeler in Germany. Onboard it has 2 x 6S lithium polymer flight battery packs connected in series. Stabilisation is provided by a kk2.1 flight controller with VTOL software.
Joel will be attempting to transition to traditional flight from a vertical take off soon...and a vertical landing. We wish him the best of luck.

Truly amazing! As one of the first batch of Harrier GR1 pilots on No 1 Sqn in 1969 (yes!) I doff my hat to Joel, a really great engineer. The movement of the aeroplane in the hover was so realistic - just like our first attempts at hovering at Wittering (no 2-seater or flight sim in those early days) groping around all over the pad on the first attempt. I’m looking forward to seeing Joel trying the transition to forward flight and then back to the hover. Joel please don’t try it in a crosswind or you may run out of aileron authority due to intake momentum drag. We had a little six penny wind vane on the nose in front of the cockpit to show us where the apparent wind was coming from. You needed to put in a boot of rudder to stick the nose back into wind - or die! Good luck Joel.

      Peter J Mallia
Peter that’s very kind of you, and great to know we were appreciated. The Seventies were the time of Flower Power, peace and love (in the Western democracies at least). At the time many young Brits and other Europeans regarded us as unnecessary militarists to be derided. It took the Falklands to start to change all that and to open their eyes.

That is bloody awesome! I live a stones throw away from RAF Wittering where Harriers were once stationed (before David Camerons defense spending review ripped the guts out of it), so I am used to seeing these in their natural habitat, so to speak, and I can tell you, Joel, those hovering characteristics are spot on.

There was an "incident" during the hand over of the first Harriers to the US Marines.
A Marine pilot to mimic the factory pilots takeoff routine of going vertical ten feet, raising the gear, pitching up then thrusting away. The Marine pilot got as far as pitching up, then he crashed tail first (no injuries). There's been a standing order not to try it or face court martial.

The Harrier is said to be one of the most demanding planes to for and yet you are flying a scale model, by remote control.
