Kim, Im gearing up to get everything in containers within the next week here in Ohio. I work all day away from home and bought a kiddie pool to get some containers in for the day to keep moist. Anything I need to be on the lookout for/overwatering/mosquitos, etc? thanks for your great tips!
Thank you so much! I need to shade my garden in a hurry. I have to do a quick easy cheat version because it’s too hot for me to build a shade tent like these other gardeners have done. So I started searching for a “cheat” or as my southern belle friend always said, “quick and dirty fix.” lol….you did it! Thank you for the idea!

We are heading for a heat wave here in Montana. I have never covered my plants in the upper 90’s. Something to think about and watch for the next few days and maybe weeks. I have learned so much from your channel. I was under the impression that growing ANYTHING was easier in California than the problems we have in Montana. I’m learning we all have our challenges with Mother Nature. Thanks for sharing!
It is going to be 110 degree here in Rancho Cucamonga today. I just finished using old bed sheets to cover my plants. Great minds think a like. I also watered and mulched them too. LOL.

Great ideas Kim! It was just over 100 here yesterday and it's forecasted at 114 today. Burlap shade cloth is up and the plants are well watered. Right after I watched this I got a call from a tree trimming company. They are on their way to drop off half a load of mulch! Woohoo! Stay hydrated!

I just discovered shade cloth last year and was like, "where have you been all my life?!?!" It's getting into the 90's here on the Gulf Coast with super high humidity. My garden just gets absolutely boiled by the sun from midday til about 3 or 4 pm. The shade cloth is a miracle worker. Thank God we've been getting plenty of rain lately, though. We had a super dry spring and early summer which is highly unusual for us. Stay cool out there in California!!!
I know this isn’t related to this video, but I’d love to see some tips to avoid squash vine borers. They have been completely ravaging my squash. It’s terrible! I’d love to see some organic ways to prevent and combat them. Thanks!

Thank you kim! I really needed these tips I live in a desert and new to gardening on my patio. I'm sure now that my plants will thrive if I implement your tips. I'm thinking of making a pvc structure to be able to cover the plant bonus is that i could use this method in winter to protect from cold.
Thanks for these tips! After my first summer growing vegs on the balcony of my new flat, I realized I have to protect my plants much more from the heat. In German videos about gardening, this topic is not so common yet. But I guess that might change in future time because of our last 4 summers 3 were really dry and hot. This year there were lots of rain and many cool days, but we had a couple of hot weeks in the end of summer.
My balcony gets sun from late morning till sunset. So that might have been a little too much for the plants and my parasol gave not enough cover for all the plants. They need more shading. My sweet pepper dropped all the flowers of except of 2 bigger fruits it already had and some beans lost many fruits. Even the leefs became pretty bright.
Now I know what to do better next year. Thank you!

My 8 year old helped me put up this structure so I could attach shade cloth and enclose all my vegetables in wildlife netting. Needed to reduce bird damage and keep away the dreaded squash vine borer and other posts! It's working well. 107 in Texas, and I'm still getting tomatoes, watermelons, and okra!

Zone 8 - Been shading tomato plants midday and they are doing much better. They 4 hrs AM sun, break til 4 and then sun til it goes down.

113 in the Pasadena, CA area today! Used white bed sheets on a couple spots, did some extra watering. Everything held up pretty well except our pumpkin patch which got a little fried. Hoping we can revive it because it just set pumpkins! Thanks for all the tips. Love your videos!

Hi Cali, It is forecast to get up to 100 degrees in the next day or two & then it might get as hot as 114 after that for into the next week. I live in the mid columbia high desert in Oregon and I'm not used to having this high of a heat wave here. I really want to protect my tomatoes & I still have some greens (lettuce, beat greens, etc.) out so if I can get somethin' up for shade & also mulch I'm hoping I can save my garden! It just goes to show ya..... you learn something new every year! Thanks for the tips.

Even with mulch I still have to water my plants each day, sometimes in the mornings and in the evenings, during summer because the sun in the Caribbean is wayyyy too strong!

Even though this is not a new video , the process helps. We are having quite the string of 95 and up heat here in the mid-west and tomatoes look healthy but I am using some netting on one of my special tomato plants to try and save some of the blooms from falling off. They will get morning sun from the east but are shaded during the mid day heat.

Thank you for this! Our Heatwave lasts throughout the Month of July but by August it's over with. That means I should have keep my shad cloth on the entire month of July. It's great knowing I can even use sheet curtains for this as I have plenty of those! :)
Thrift store fabric shower curtains work too, for stronger sun protection.
I used to buy bags of ice and lay them on the ground next to my plants.
My theory was when the plants took up the cool water it cooled the whole plant.
I've never even thought of that.i hope it worked.

My dad forgot to protect our Swiss chard 🌱s that we planted in Spring 2020 together when we had a heatwave recently, because he didn't remember to put on some protective tarps which help prevent the heat from entering the 🌱s. I'll remind him about it next year. Oh and get this, our Sweet Italian Basil 🌱s have nearly survived the intense heat. They've died on us and we didn't use shade cloths just like you did in the videos where you protected your pepper plants and your Beefsteak 🍅plants at the same time. 👍🏻 if you're impressed with how well I remind relatives I live with everyday when heat spells are predicted in the forecast.
You need hoops. I made mine out of PVC pipes and rebar on the outside to slip the PVC over the rebar to hold in place. You can just bend and stick them down into the inside sides of the beds but I didn’t want the PVC in contact with my soil. They make UV PVC it holds up better in the sun but a little more expensive. I bought 12 foot pipe X 8 three for each bed. At 69 cents per foot. It made my life so much easier. I was doing the shade cloth on tie down stakes like you and I couldn’t stand the look lol. But I was using rubber bands to tie the cloth down. Put cloth on and slip the rubber band over the stakes at the top. Works perfect if using stakes. Holds in the wind.

I'm gonna take a white sheet and cut it up in maybe 3ft by 4ft sections, or maybe even longer and just attack it with a couple cloths pins to my wire mesh cages to provide some relief from that afternoon sun.

I just added some plants near the walkway near the entrance of my condo totally forgetting that it gets westward sun. Day 2 and the leaves look like they're wilting. I guess I'll water before I leaveI cant put up a shade cloth so I'll have to put a rectangle shape shadecloth with stakes on the end to protect the plant.
Can you or have you ever told how many gallons of water you are using for the garden per month? I use stored rainwater, just with a sprinkling can, and I don't seem to water things enough. My tomato plants occasionally choose to have yellow leaves or branches dry up.

All of my tomato flowers are falling off. I live in Hawaii. Weather has been consistent: highs of about 85, low rain (so watering is consistent), all newer plants with newer/amended soil w/ tomato fertilizer, 5/1/1 fish oil every 2 weeks, leaves look great, flowers grow and look great till they just fall off. I've self pollinated them, I've talked to them, they're in different parts of my garden, most in raised beds, a couple in pots. 6+ hours of sun. All same issue of flowers falling off... Can't figure it out.

Last week I hung a semi-sheer curtain over my grape tomatoes here in Florida.
Around Sept 2029 I started grape tomato plants from my own seeds. When they were about 8-12" tall I did the following: I planted them a lot deeper in the soil so they could develop roots on the stem.
Question: Did you plant your young vegetables seedlings like your beef steak plant deeper? Have you ever tried that. What were your results. I don't think it worked. Mine appear spindly and we're drying out recently even though we water frequently. They are not full and bushy like I was hoping, even giving them miracle grow in the watering. I harvest about 4-6 grape tomatoes of my 4-6 plants. Not much...

I keep hearing it's not good to water in the middle of the day. I have potted plants and they are really dried out right now. Do you think it would be ok to water? Or wait till dusk or Dawn. There not fruiting yet.
I live in SoCal and in My area the temperature went up to 115 on the fist day of the heat wave and my small avocado tree that I am growing from seed got badly burned 😩

You mentioned mulching. I wanted to know if cedar mulch is ok to use? Does cedar mulch affect the ph in any way? Also, is it too hot to plant new seeds or should I just wait until weather starts to cool?
My peppers/tomatoes are all in self watering containers w/a water jug buried in the container w/a cotton wicking strip. Thxs.
I'm in east Texas do not use cedar! It's about the only one to not use.
Do you leave the covering over them all day and night since everyday the heat index is crazy high? Our heat index has been staying close to 110 daily. Thanks for the videos! You have inspired me to try seed growing with a grow light. What is the best grow light to use? I saw colored ones on Amazon and other sites but I have only seen the white fluorescent ones in the past. Thanks!

the best garden i ever had was when my backyard had lots of trees at the west side edge which provided shade in the evening. as you know it gets hotter in the evening and if you can plant your garden east of a bunch of trees that will really help. my daughter did that last year and her garden turned out great.
mulching is very important and i use shredded leaves, grass clippings, hay and straw to cover the soil around my plants. not only does it help cool by keeping the ground from drying out as fast but it also gives the soil nutrients for the following season as it breaks down over the winter.
Please please make a video on nasturtiums and other flowers also.........
i water around the garden during the heat of the day NOT ON IT! AROUND IT! Can feel it cool the garden. also plant bags are much better! cause you you can pick it up and move it into part shade > SUN SHADE is a screen to block off sun rays i like the 60 % shade > 1 more Plant in part shade, where it block the sun rays in the hottest part of the day Than between 1 pm to 5 pm 4 hours a day Then give them a good watering at dust> WATERING IN THE HEAT PART OF THE DAY COOKS EM! and don't water in the mornings EITHER! cause there still water in the ground, Sun hit it and cooks em >>> TEXAS SUN RAYS ARE VERY HELLISH!

In Florida put in my first garden using a 40% shade cloth. Everything turned yellow and we lost some plants. I was watering everyday. I am thinking I need a 70-80% shade cloth.

That sheer curtain material looks a bit like tulle. Robbie of the “Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy” channel is a huge fan of tulle as a cheap and effective form of pest deterrent (as long as it’s not pollination time when you need bees). She suggests a double layer of tulle might also work as shade cloth. A bolt of tulle can be bought on Amazon or any fabric store, with lots of choices of color. I’m thinking white might reflect the most sun?, but I am no engineer! Green would be less conspicuous.

Its about 95 Degrees here in SoCal and my soil was starting to go dry and hot. I placed my plants in the shade and gave them some water. Hope that's enough for them but will check in on them Regularly. Thank you for this video it was very helpful. I would have probably not have done anything to them if it wasn't for this video and they would have died. My Squash is very stressed.

Hi Yvonne, so glad you are liking the seed collections - the heat tolerant greens are really troopers. For the NZ spinach, it really loves the heat, I've had great luck getting it to germinate on a heat mat. I use a 40% shade cloth, here's a link, amzn.to/2sMrDnc. For future reference, I put links for products I use in the video description to make it easier for you to find. I use shade cloth over 90 degrees, the 40% block still allows sunlight through. ((: didn't think i might see an answer after the first day, i know things move quickly. so just tried to catch you on a live stream about the cloth, & came back here hoping i might find even an answer from anyone; so happy to see this! i had clicked your cloth link from the box & ordered immediately, but wasn't sure how long to leave it on. i.e., it could stay up a very long time here, so wondered at what point is the plant not worth having, as in, does production drop so much or stop due to very lengthy shading that it doesn't make sense. like, you aren;t protecting a perennial, so it;s not worth tending, etc.? like, are you are just wasting time, space, fertilizer for weeks, or will they grow something under the 60% extendedly? my tomatoes are precious, just didn't want to waste months to find that out. i just hear that,s why everyone gives up on growing in the summer here when i ask, but since i have fabric containers & can shade, i a happy to nurture them if it's at all worth it. ------ i did the NZ spinach in cups outside, definitely warm! not sure what went wrong. new ones i did worm tea for the presoak; noticed pods very tender as i planted! fingers crossed! ------ thanks for the strawberry crate info. i watched your video before asking, of course; i do use all smartPot brand containers, for everything, even tropicals! but was instead buying bolt cloth to do the herb basket & berries for conformity; wasn;t sure how thick of cloth to go. actually, guess the thicker the better, for moisture retention.... so, then, just thumbs up or down on the ICU tomatoes?? already time here to plant fall/heat-set ones, but would love to keep some pre-existing going, if it's feasable. it;s a big deal because i want that space for more new ones if they are impractical now. --- again, thanks so much for your time, & have a great break! Hi Kim. Thank you for your tips. I have a question. I know it gets hot in California but I’ve heard there’s nothing like the heat down here where I live. I live at the very tip of south Texas and the sun kills everything down here! Does that mean I should always keep my garden protected from the sun? I’m in zone 9b it gets hotter and hotter every year. We’re above 105 degrees from about May-September. Harsh!
I am in hot & dry zone 9a (Vegas) and I keep shade cloth over them 24\7. My neighbor doesn't and his tomato plants are dried up and shriveled compared to mine. Definitely helps.

Stay cool, Jean! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, it is possible to overwater your container plants. Always make sure your containers have good drainage and closely monitor them to make sure they are not getting under watered or overwatered by checking the soil with your finger, as I showed in the video. Another tip is to make sure if you are watering after the sun has been out for awhile to check the temperature of the water in the hose, run it to let it cool down. Also, which plants are the most in need of protection, you mentioned tomatoes, strawberries & squash, are there others that should be high priority?

turned everything but the AC and the fridge off.

Thank you for this video! I plan to start my first container garden this year. I have a question about container tomatoes. I bought a 10 gallon container, can I grow 2 tomato plants in the 1 10 gallon? If so, I would be growing grape and yellow patio in the same pot. TIA! :)
I can answer that and yes you can. I have two Roma’s in a five gallon pail and they are doing beautifully. Just make sure as they get older you do some pruning so their is adequate air flow through the plants.

Luckily I have some that I don't use anymore, so I will go dig them out and cover my vegetable plants before it gets up to 90 degree in a few hours. Hahahah...."Don't tell Gary", that's so cute. :))
only problem for me is i live in a SUPER windy area and any shade i put up simply flies away. :(

It's been in the 90s here in NC and we are now watering every 2 to 3 days. We have a medium sized kid pool and I use that grey water to water my garden with. I also put 5 gallon buckets under the rain gutters to collect water and help out on the water bill. Love your tips and videos!

I use black plastic garbage sack rolls when planting my garden I cut holes and plant my seeds or baby plants. This holds in the moisture and keeps out weeds and I use compost to cover my roots if they show on the soil when growing. I also us a green UV cloth over the whole bed. Tomato will curl up and almost look wilted when too hot or to much wind . The back plastic also protects from bugs .

Next 2 days triple digit heat followed by 90+ for several days. And planting hopefully the rest of my plants tomorrow morning--not at all ideal! Last bedding area is a mixture of rocks, berry roots, and detrius from previous owner who must have thought broken glass, metal and bits of plastic were soil amendments, all baked into clay soil. Needless to say, putting in the bed has been slow going!
Wow I can't believe you plucked that tomato , it's better for the plant to cut it off with a bit of the vine attached. Some beginners are watching you and might think it's OK to just pull them off not realizing you used both hands with care not to pull . Just saying !

Thimk accordion on curtains. Tack thfm to a stick. Then justvraise the stick to trape the top on a nail in each upright. Makes draping use only seconds each.
What got burned squash; French beans; one or two aubergines and our little pear tree and just about anything i planted late, didn't want to come up as it was too hot; we were short of water. We are waiting for permission to pump water into a water tank from the mountain.
Can the shade cloth touch the plant without it causing harm? My Tomato plant is already 10 ft tall . i dont have anything tall enough that is already around it.
Use foam pipe installation to protect your shade cloth from rips and tears from cloth rubbing on sharp corners.

Its really hot here in the UK at the moment. Have not had any appreciable amount of rain here for about six weeks. Ground is dry and many crops are suffering.
