It's a real pain as sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So if you're unlucky, you can test it, see it's working for one video, then the next couple you get nothing. I've read that running a powered mic solves the issue, but that's another hassle.
@@MotoJournoKris I've just bought an insta 360 one rs twin. Reputation seems to be much better and they are on sale at the moment probably because there is a new model coming out. I'll keep the go pro as a helmet camera.
I came upon your video because I just purchased an H1N and Purple Panda and I don't really like the sound. Tried all the settings from different channels. Lots of vibration and shaky audio. Thinking of trying a Media Mod.
I feel like the Media Mod is a nice simple solution that works pretty well. Not perfect, but I've tried a number of different audio recorders and I've never been particularly happy. Ironically the Media Mod has overall been the best. I've got a Tascam DR-05 and a Zoom F2 and would say the Mod is better than the Tascam, and at least as good as I've gotten out of the F2, often better. I really need to do more testing, I normally find the onboard audio disappointing. Where do you run the H1N and Purple Panda mic? Even under the seat I seemed to get a lot of wind noise which I couldn't understand, even when wrapping the mic in foam. A lot of people find the Purple Panda mics a bit mediocre, but it's hard to find a really good alternative.
@@MotoJournoKris Thanks for the response. I've ordered a Media Mod and a different mic so we'll see if that's any better. I've been focused on verbal rather than the exhaust. I stole the idea of clipping into the "wind guard' thing on the bottom of the helmet and that was very loud. My best result has been to clip the Panda directly in the front of my helmet in front of my mouth with the fuzzy thing on but I thought it still sounded very bizarre/choppy. I had the H1n in my pocket with the mic running up to the inside of my helmet.
@@RamblinManMoto I've had similar issues. I've also heard putting the mic inside the cheek pad might work well, especially with the more sensitive microphones, but I never had a really good result with that either. I think some of the riders that do exhaust audio only actually put the mic and recorder inside a backpack on their back, right out of the way of the wind. The Hama VOIP microphone has also worked well for me, as it's low sensitivity, and picks up less noise overall. It's just annoying as the cord is not very flexible.
Nice setup Kris.. I ride a Kawasaki Z 900rs.. I have a similar setup with GoPro hero 8 with media mod and Rode mic.. my issue is the mic records wind buffeting(which is expected of naked bike) and my breathing sound which sometimes becomes very annoying.. what would you recommend to reduce my breathing sound..? Any tips are much appreciated.. as always great content 👍🏼
I've got a Rode mic wedged behind my cheek pad at the moment which removed all the breathing issues, but not all the buffeting at higher speeds. I'm thinking I might need to face the mic back, but I'm not sure if that will cause everything else to be less audible, like talking, or introduce a more muffled sound. I might also try and run it inside the cheek pad. Normally I add one of the wind muffs, but the space there is super tight. Before that I was running the other mic and I had a small wind muff, and another much larger one cable tied on over the top, which helped but wasn't perfect. I did find some Rode microphones seem more sensitive, which is why I tried others like Purple Panda, but they never lasted long.
@@MotoJournoKris thanks for responding.. Rode mics are very sensitive.. I feel so too.. currently I have wedged the mic behind the cheek pads.. but even on low speeds I can hear loud breathing sound.. I will try adding the wind muffs.. 👍🏼
Well being a novice to these vlogging products I don’t think my opinion means much. That said if I had tuned in to watch a bike review or a mod of some sort with the audio quality of this video, I would’ve thought it just fine. I know, not much help probably. Sorry M.J.Kris, lol
Quick record not capturing audio! Thanks, you've solved a mystery for me.

Nah I really value your feedback. Sometimes it's hard to tell if I'm being pedantic about audio quality, or if people would think it's ok!
