  • What should you do if your dog or cat seizures? Dr. Justine Lee, veterinary specialist explains. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do during the actual seizure. If your dog or cat seizures for more than 5 minutes, has multiple seizures in a day (e.g., called cluster seizures), got into something poisonous (that may have resulted in the seizure), or has never had a seizure before, get to a veterinarian or emergency veterinarian immediately.
    Dr. Justine Lee, DACVECC, DABT, is the CEO and founder of VETgirl, a subscription-based podcast & webinar service offering online veterinary continuing education. Dr. Lee trained at Cornell University, Angell, and University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lee has been published in numerous veterinary journals and has authored several veterinary textbooks and book chapters, along with two humorous pet reference books. Dr. Lee is board-certified in both emergency/critical care and toxicology, and lectures throughout the world. More information can be found at www.drjustinelee.com and www.vetgirlontherun.com.

    This happened with our Russian Blue cat Sansa. It was extremely traumatizing. But she is now on meds and has been diagnosed with epelipsy and is doing amazing! I actually created a seizure care kit for her that we keep in our living room. It has pee pee pads, her emergency nose gel, baby wipes, and white (bleach able) washcloths. This greatly helps during and after.

    Thankfully, seizures are not painful to your dog or cat. Your pet may definitely feel abnormal before the seizure and after the seizure but it's not painful.

      Well, as I heard from people having seizures/epilepsy, they don´t feel pain while having the seizure, but afterwards all their muscles hurt a lot & cramp. Like they run a marathon or something. So, technically the seizure is linked with pain.

      No Mike+ Like I said, I got that info from people actually having that illness. They actually experienced it. I also know somebody having epilepsy and saw myself his seizures & even grand mals multiple times. He was all stiff after he woke up & his body hurt.

    my kitty was just diagnosed with epilepsy and is now on phenobarb twice a day. It took her a few weeks to get used to it, but now she's starting to act like her old self. I didn't realize how much I missed her purr and play!

    • @drjustinelee
      @drjustinelee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's frustrating just for a few days as the phenobarbital makes pets really, really sedate, but they definitely get better after even just a week! :)

      Since her sezeiur she now smells everything and even trys to eat my food (which she's never been interested in before!), and she'll no longer eat her dry food. Is this normal? What would cause that??

    • @justinelee9930
      @justinelee9930 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They get REALLY hungry off phenobarbital so make sure to stick to her NORMAL diet and even consider gradually switching her to a less active food if she starts gaining weight!

    My neighbour's cat, Basil, spends most of his time on my open front porch. He's sixteen and has a history of seizures. He will have them from time to time at my place. I know when one is coming on: he will pace and hiss. It is indeed very painful to watch him undergo a seizure; I stand nearby to him but I don't interfere. My observation is that when he comes out of the seizure, he will run a distance away, obsessively lick his front legs, froth at the mouth, hiss if I touch him. It often happens that he has wet himself. About ten minutes afterwards, he 'comes to', when I can dry him down with paper towels and pet him and sometimes give him a small portion of wet food to calm him. The seizure itself is entirely in his head - he becomes unconscious - but the abnormal throwing himself about and jerkiness of his limbs causes considerable physical tiredness. He can sleep for a long time afterwards. Bless the dear old thing. Robert, UK.

    • @drjustinelee
      @drjustinelee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are medications (anti-seizure/anticonvulsants), but you have to have your cat examined by a vet and have some bloodwork done to make sure the seizures aren't from something else!

    My dog had the same problem with seizures...I gave him aloe vera (jelly part of the aloe vera leaf..about 2 inches ..remove the green part outside of the leaf..and you can smash it up and mix it with 1 teaspoon of honey and give it to your dog every day..
    It will cure his/her seizures...with in 1 week time)hope this help..

    • @cicek5827
      @cicek5827 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is a dangerous advice! Isn't aloe vera poisonous for animals!?It was the cause for my cats seizure. He bit it and had his first seizure a short time after that. He's on meds now and is doing good.

    My cat keeps having seizures but they only last for a couple 5 seconds. It’s still heartbreaking because she urinates. Does anyone have any idea why this might happen?

    • @drjustinelee
      @drjustinelee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It needs to be seen asap - the more the pet seizures, the more it lowers the seizure threshold and makes your pet more likely to seizure again and again... sounds like medication (and a workup) are needed!!
