So ironically while editing this video I actually caught that shiny blacephalon in Ultra Sun, kinda crazy how it took 7 years to find it but we got there 😭🙏
As someone currently shiny hunting ho oh in Ultra Sun I can 100% say that shiny hunting in Scarlet and Violet respect my time far more as someone who just simply prefers certain shiny color pallettes over regular colors sometimes ( I dont look for the lime greens on purpose). I get people like the feeling of finally finding a shiny after 4 years 3 months ect but I attribute that feeling as being a consequence of burn out rather then pure joy. Shiny hunting should be fun first and foremost and if the method can't be fun then it needs to be less tedious to balance out the repetitive nature. I feel Legends Arceus had a good balance where you were still actively searching for the pokemon and looking for map outbreaks while being able to casually stop and throw balls at other things when it got tedious for money/items and the excitement came from hearing the jingle go off and then immediatly turn into hunting mode. All those mons were still on the map like Scarlet/Violet but the jingle turns on the lottery/slot machine/serotonin boost that us humans crave.
I disagree. Shiny hunting is actually more fun in SV. I'll agree that shinies are inherently less valuable now, and I also agree that some Pokémon being a seeing eye test is annoying, but they've given us enough tools to make shiny hunting accessible to more people. Shiny Pokémon have always been RNG dependent. The chance of getting a shiny in your first encounter is never zero. But what that meant in old games is the only challenge to getting a shiny is "how long are you willing to sit and do the same task for days on end?" I have tried shiny hunting in the past, every method that is supposed to increase odds, and never found the shinies I was looking for. I have gotten my fair share of random shinies, but never gotten one I was hunting, until SV. And some of those hunts still took me days. My shiny Applin took me 2 weeks. But in SV, if there's an outbreak, it's actually feasible to find a shiny in a single day. That's less of my life and attention span wasted on a cool and rare Pokémon. I don't think we should attach the value of a shiny Pokémon to how much suffering someone had to endure.
I agree on the fact that the shiny odds way back in the OG games were unbearable, but for the games that had base odds of a 1/4096 chance without the open world aspect it was still definitely do-able to find a shiny in the span of a day or two, especially if you had a shiny charm. The thing about shinies in previous games is no matter which one you found you’d still feel rewarded for finding it even if you weren’t searching for that specific one due to the odds of running into it, in SV half of the shinies I’ve collected feel like throwaways because I can easily walk around for a couple minutes in-game to find yet another one, and when I’m actually searching for a specific shiny all it takes is an encounter rate sandwich and 30 minutes of my time to run into the shiny of my choice. I get that some people don’t have the time to shiny hunt in the previous games, but Pokemon games as a whole are meant to be time consuming with the main game, catching the entire pokedex, etc., and don’t forget how it’s targeted towards a younger audience which usually has more time to spare than adults, so the argument that shiny hunting used to be “too time consuming” kinda contradicts how Pokemon games as a whole are meant to be. I still get what you mean though, I guess it just comes down to why each player chooses to shiny hunt and what outcome they expect out of it
I gotta say, I enjoy shiny hunting in SV and PLA. I don’t have time for 3DS and behind hunts (except for ultra space!) but every pokemon for me is fun to hunt for. I do miss the shiny sound when one spawns, tho. I’m working on my 3rd box of shinies after catching 40 Alolan Shiny Raichu. I find it exciting with the lower odds that I could find a shiny at any moment, and that keeps me on edge.
I disagree, shiny hunting is fine in SV. It works for casual hunters, it’s only dull when people spam it. Look at SS, shiny hunting is terrible. It has the random encounters like classic games but, you can’t tell if it’s a shiny are mark until after the encounter. It’s impossible to save before a shiny, so no multiple attempts at a special ball, or if a Pokémon KOs. Shiny charm doesn’t work for curry mons, raids, or anything other then eggs and basic encounters. Chaining only effects brilliant spawns. It’s such a pain no wonder people used exploits. Now with SV gamefreak actually respects the players time. Shiny hunting should be fun, not a 8 hour a day grind like it’s a job.
I respect that, OG shiny hunting was kinda tedious if you didn’t have any free time, I didn’t really notice back then because I was a kid but after hopping on my old save files for this video yeah I can totally see it now 😂
I personally disagree sv as it lacks variety in the way u can hunt and the shiny feels guaranteed so gets dull quickly I actually love ss u have a variety of methods curry being the hardest and breeding the easiest then battling in between u can sr hunt as well then with dlc max Lairs u can get a shiny easily but still feels earned so u can casual hunt and then go for harder hunts
SV has my favorite shiny hunting. I disagree with almost everything this video says, but to each their own. The one thing I would change is making a visual/audio signal when you come across a shiny in the wild, like in Legends Arceus.
PLA definitely did it right with the sparkles and jingle. I wish they'd kept it in SV. But I do feel so excited every time I find a shiny in SV. Prior to PLA and SV, I had _never_ found a shiny Pokemon in any of my games before. There's a lot that SV makes things difficult, like trying to figure out if a Pokemon is shiny or not and the music literally putting me to sleep while I'm grinding, but knowing that I _will_ actually get the shiny eventually makes me feel accomplished. I went from 0 shinies to 90 shinies in the past two years. I even shinyhunted Quaxly and hatched boxes upon boxes of eggs to get that shiny Quaxly. I tried that method in Y with Ekans and never got my yellow snake lol. I'm just glad I actually get the shiny I hunt now.
I both agree and disagree. Sometimes it can feel like a huge waste of time, with way slower pacing than PLA, but if you’re going for a Living Dex, nothing’s that easy, but nothing’s really too hard either. The worst you’ll get is egg hunting, and that’s still WAYYYY faster than waiting 40 minutes for three Pokémon to appear (I’m talking about Distortion Hunting). The worst you’ll get in SV is Gimmighoul, and it’s debatable whether that even counts, as Gimmighoul is only occasionally available shiny.
You are mostly wrong here. Does need some adjustments, but making longer odds ain’t it. Sparkle and shiny sound definitely needs to return in overworld. What you are missing is the producers don’t want you to play the game for years, just until the next game comes out.
I disagree on that last part to an extent because the shinies aren’t meant to be the main focus of the game, the way I see it is most casual players will play the main game and then wait for the next title, but the shinies are like an add-on portion to each game incase the player wanted some extra things to do before they moved on, they aren’t really intrusive enough to stop a player from moving onto future titles but they do keep players occupied enough on that current game if they wanted to get more out of it, like with my shiny blacephalon example it never held me back from playing the future titles, it was really just something I tried hunting for in my free time since it gave me more to do in Ultra Sun
@@RyanRhino I could see that as possible. But I posit that the accessibility has been increased to encourage non shiny hunters to become one. Because while I have well over 2,000 shinies, only Arceus was I willing to hunt in the old method of resetting over and over. Not too sure but definitely an interesting topic.
Great video! I don’t think sv are fundamentally flawed, just fundamentally different. They appeal to an entirely different set of skills. I prefer shiny hunting in prior games, but I absolutely cannot deny that it is sometimes fun to play spot the difference, and shines in this game also feel like more of a reward for being attentive. I think this direction is absolutely intentional, it just falls short of what I love about shiny hunting. I can definitely agree that I wish some middle ground was reached. I think raising the odds is honestly an idea that can work, as long as other methods are introduced for fans of sv shiny hunting
Shinies seem not to exist in my scarlet game so far. After hearing how shinies are even essier to find than in arceus i was expecting to at least have 1 by now but ive beaten all the titans and 5/8 gyms and nothing. Did 11 mass outbreaks even tried the picnic spawn reset thing but nope. Hopefully now that I've complained i will get one
I think the reason shiny hunting in SV is so dull is because the main method of encountering Pokemon means you see a LOT of encounters super fast. Like I reset a sandwich if I can't find a shiny within the first 10 minutes and if I don't find at least 3 during one sandwich session. That's how bad shiny hunting is now. I'd rather complete my shiny living dex in a Gen 3 rom hack (Clover) than actually work on my main one
I totally agree with that sandwich reset thing because one time I was like 20 min into a herba mystica sandwich and all I found by the end of it was a shiny pawmi so I just straight up killed him and restarted my last save so I could get more shinies out of the sandwich 💀
Yep I feel it’s also that it’s the only method I don’t enjoy running around waiting for my guaranteed shiny I like working for it as I shiny hunt for the adrenaline and breeding would be fun if it wasn’t done how it was u could find a shiny in the wild while hatching
@@RyanRhino My best haul was like 6 shinies in one sandwich, but I cannot justify using Herba Mystica for only one or two shinies when they take forever to grind for. Also think SV did kind of a dumb thing in locking off the Treasures of Ruin to be shiny, because like they are the ONLY static legendaries to not be visible in the overworld before battling, just have the shiny check happen upon opening the seal. I do think in the original 1.0.0 they weren't shiny, but I don't have enough evidence to prove that since it seems nobody hunted for them back then.
@@strawberryjess Breeding is someho0w worse than random encounters which is why I will almost never breed for shinies unless I absolutely need to. And in my Clover living dex there are so many mons who either have a low catch rate, low encounter rate, or both to where I need to breed for them. There is a chaining method in that rom hack where you need to catch 200 Pokemon to get 1/256 odds on that Pokemon specifically. However, if you're going after a Pokemon with lower than 6.25% encounter rate, it makes the shiny rarer to get than a full odds shiny because of the encounter rate. At that point it is better to breed for the shiny and guarantee it vs phasing. But breeding is so monotonous unlike random encounters and idk why
I mean for me when it comes to buying games the only times I’m actually buying a full priced game is if I’m 100% confident it’s gonna be good, but if everyone’s arguing over the games value when it releases I’m probably just gonna wait for a discount or watch a playthrough, thing is Nintendo and Game Freak never discount their games for a good price so 😂
Yeah since the games been out for awhile I got it free on my DS like a year ago, only thing is each game takes at least like 40 hours to beat so I just haven’t had the time to play it yet
I can kinda agree I caught 68 shiny pokemon in four days last week due to the event 63 of them were just Tatsugiri. To get enjoyment out of them, I had to give them away to feel suspense.
I think RyanRhino has a good point. I think game freak understood this and that's why we have marks now. I did a Cheispin outbreak and got a shiny with the rare mark. Then on my recent birthday I caught two shinnies with the choose one mark. So with shinnes becoming a common thing, marks make them stand out.
Shinies being harder to find makes it more fun, but it depends the method being used. For me personally the SOS method was the most fun and useful. You build up your chain, EV train, and still get the suspense of waiting for a shiny to pop up on each new spawn all at the same time.
Lmao thanks, I never thought I’d heard that since he’s just a normal cartoon rhino but tbh there’s like no one else who uses a rhino OC so I appreciate it 😂
I'm so new to shiny hunting, I don't even dedicate much time to it, and I just got back from playing pokemon, Arceus and Scarlet. Arceus is more fun than Scarlet due to the sound and visual thingy of Arceus😂 Also, last pokemon I played was in emerald, and so far, playing this 2 recent game, I enjoy it. Scarlet and Violet is a pretty solid game when it wants to be, I think most of its complaints came from at launch when it had a lot of glitches but I thought the plot and gym/gang progression were a step up from the previous games
I agree. I get more people who have been able to find shinies because of how easy it is now and great for you all. BUT you took away the enjoyment for shiny hunters who've been doing this a long time. You can't just drop them like that. If you dont have the time to put in to shiny hunt, then maybe you just shouldn't do it. There are plenty of games for you all to play when you're done with Pokemon.
I agree I hate shiny hunting it that game breeding is just annoying and there really isn’t a difficult hunt I like sword and shield and sun and moon as the are various methods like sr, breeding, max lair or worm holes then the new method for the game. In those games it makes the shiny feel earned but u can easily get one still while scarlet and violet its more guaranteed and isn’t as exiting
I, too, hate when video games make features more accessible to players and remove the soul-draining tedium of a task and make it more casual and not take five hours of doing the same thing over and over again.
That’s literally the purpose of shiny hunting though, it’s an additional feature to the main game which requires time and patience to encounter rare pokemon, not even just that but it encouraged players to finish the dex and get the shiny charm since the charm made shiny hunting easier to an extent with it being less time consuming, but it also wasn’t as stupid easy as it is now in SV
With sandwiches & many Pokemon on screen it's very easy to get shiny. Also there are many channels and sites that allow people to get shinies whether paid or free
So long as theres no 20k resets to get a pokemon. Those ppl need to get over it. Its life goin on. Shiny hunting is perfectly fine in SV. The only probelm is the small ones or the pokemon with little color change. I hate random encounters. So glad thats gone.
