jonathangonza Yes, unfortunately. It can be very painful and destructive. Support is very important. If you can't get support from your loved ones, the best is to let It go and try to find someone who is not going to project their failures onto you. I was thought from very young age that nothing good will ever come to me, that I will always struggle. The damage done got deeply rooted. In that case, you have to practise mindfulness to minimise any possible future damage since It is very hard to change something you learned very early on. And to let go of the anger or any resentment. People around you sometimes just don't know any better. In their minds, they think they are protecting you.
until you prove everyone that you are best at something in that way that you can have a stable career without any risk like every normal job , everyone will have doubt in you it doesn;t matter if they are your parents or friends because everyone wants you to be secure in this time like having a stable job / paycheck / insurance / starting your own family.
Something i started saying is "i can make a logo and other graphics" now as a designer i tell my clients "i can take your ideas and turn them into reality". We can work together to solve your creative problem.

"How can I come across as an expert?" Here's the thing. As a business owner, I look to hire the most connected and relevant person. Which is often a much younger person than myself (as tech is always updating). I just need to know you're reliable for the price, and will deliver a good result. That's all I care about.
Here’s the clear answer, do the work. If you want to be known as the expert, do 5 case studies a week on real, local businesses in your area. Tag them in it. (If it’s good, they’ll share it or contact you). And another thing, know the client you are trying to pursue. Timothy the business owner of Dark Pikachu Tv on TH-cam with 9k subscribers will not pay $10k for a website. However, Brittany the marketing manager from Herbal Tea and Steam Therapy will pay $10k for a campaign which includes new landing pages for a website.

I'm in my last year in my graphic communication in university and most students don't have a clear goal to what type of design field they'd like to go into yet which is not a bad thing because everyone is at different stages. Would love an episode on a career path for graduate or how to plan things out from the start. Great video as always!
XD do a lot of work. I think sitting back and asking what you want is good, but going out and doing different things is better. Also, sometimes basic discipline is the answer. I think most students have goals, but then don't focus on discipline, fail, then change goals. (From my own experience when I was younger XD)

Truth is I've held myself back for this exact reason but coming out of my comfort zone and worked with people and doing phenomenal work where the people who i've worked with before would jump to work with me in a heartbeat. My Advice, Build bridges and fake it to you make it and be genuine while doing it. Most importantly be earnest about solving the problems you've set out to and watch your career bloom.

I recently found this channel, an I can't stop watching it. This video helped me tremendously. I have been experiencing something extremely similar. As someone who is young and doesn't have as much experience, I find it hard to evaluate and convey my worth to clients. The problem I have the most is undervaluing myself. When I work on a project, I usually feel like I'm faking it. Even though I know I am completely capable, I get that feeling of "who am I to do this" or "why should anyone listen to my opinion."
Expertise level of Creativity : 1 - Tactical Level : graphic & visual. 2 : Interaction Level : conversation, discussion, relational. 3 : Strategic Level : Branding, Perception, stimulation. As young guns, i used to think that visual is everything. As times goes by, i learn strategic level of creativity is to solve complex problems. When you to try to solve complex (Level 3) problems, that will include interaction and tactical level.
i'm 35 now, and since school I've been doing my own logos, my own banners, my own websites. Everything I do is creating on my own thinking that I what I had was not enough for any company. And I just kept expanding my knowledge to doing my own 3D designs, learn coding for my own purposes without earning a dime. I now realize that I didn't take any student loans for the skills, and I have 17 years of experience.
I'm an ACCD from 2000 and this is absolutely true. We focus on design and forget the business side. Know your worth and don't be afraid to fail or lose a client. It's part of the learning process. The only rule is to always give your best work/design because you can always look back and say you produced your best and the client didn't have the vision/budget/integrity or wsa just cheap to pay you what you were worth. But your work will eventually bring clients who will pay for your skill/worth.
I had submitted a question on the lat round of submissions, and the first designer asked the same thing in a much simpler, cleaner way. I greatly appreciate that
Best advice for young people who are passionate and are in love with the culture of design is to commit to however long it takes while also committing yourself to do the best work possible. This will drastically cut down how long it will take to stand out. There’s always a need and when you become a person that people are talking about, the work will find you. But don’t rush it. Concentrate on the craft of design. In the meantime, network your ass off. And the biggest piece of advice I can give you is to be confident. A mediocre confident design is going to be far more successful than many brilliant designers with no confidence. You’re designing for people to solve people problems in a design context. Understand people, understand who you are trying to reach, ask questions of your clients in an empathetic way to solve THEIR problems. Use your creativity to align the tools and elements to craft possibilities. You’re going to have terrible clients in the beginning and only do work for terrible people if you don’t. Your value is far more than how great your design looks. If you can identity areas of potential and the client is serious about the work, they’ll listen and they’ll thank you for uncovering areas to work on. And they will pay you. Don’t be afraid of doing work for less money in the beginning but use every project as an opportunity to land bigger and better projects. Understand that you’re competing against a crowded field and only the people most willing to work harder because they have an undying passion are going to make it through the tough times. If you want a formula for quick success, it’s not going to happen, unless you have rich friends who will hype you up as their designer friend who kicks ass. Most of us won’t have that. So work, work, work, and work on your confidence. If your client feels rewarded, they’ll spread the word about how amazing it was to work with someone as talented as you.

12:23 I find very interesting when people who are learning something shares what she/he has being doing because usually they have a lot of enthusiasm and are discovering older resources (books, people keen to that area of interest) as well as new resources because either they go to formal school or read a lot. That's a lot of value. Also you can see in their recent videos how their ideas or concepts about their topic of interest is maturing or shaping for good
I'm specializing in visual identity for healthcare and this is exactly what I needed right now. If I had one thing to say for all you guys, it's that people call you because they think you know more than they do on a specific problem. Find the big issues for you to solve for the client and you will be confident about the true value of your work.
My perspective on weaknesses is that there are none. It always depends on the perspective and the circumstances. Chris gave this great example where he turn 'being young' from a weakness to a strength and I believe the same can be done for any trait. Looking for details all the time is a good trait as accountant but might get you stuck as when you have to focus on the big picture as a CEO. Being funny all the time might not be suited in a situation where you have to make serious decisions. So, there are only traits or preferences that fit better in some circumstances than in others. The art is to know how and when to use these traits and to be aware of the consequences.
As I mentor & coach individuals in their careers + businesses - I often run into them asking "But how do I know I'm not a fraud." I used to spend hours explaining core steps towards confidence development + tracking successes. Now I just send them this video

You need to do a video with people (like myself) who have been in the industry for 20+ years and are trying to still position themselves as an expert in something after playing the part of Jack of all Trades. I'd love to hear your take on how someone in their 40s can reposition themselves to stay relevant and competitive.
I feel that it doesn’t matter how old you are, that you have the opportunity to learn something new from every person you interact with, however big or small small that piece of information is. I learn from students everyday and they are from 11 to 18 years of age, they can approach tasks in a way I’ve not considered, or teach me things that are a part of their culture, even something as small as the meaning of a new slang word being used by them. We are always learning, and age doesn’t matter when it comes to the teacher you learn from if they teach you something you didn’t know and now previously.
I get what he's saying about trying to look like the professional charging a lot being/looking so young. Although I agree your work will speak for itself, you can't always expect people just to find you through your work online. You Will have to visit businesses, set up meetings and sell yourself especially when your coming up. My best advice for his question would to look professional and be confident when your meeting with people. Have a portfolio to show for and never negotiate on your prices because you lower your worth at that point. You don't need every job you need the right ones.
this a big problem with school, all teachers say to be broad and not focus on one path, but once you go out to the job world you need to clearly go for one direction UI, Logo, digital, Print, yes they are interchangeable, also school seams like they have teachers that just are there for the pay check and are not there to help students grow or achieve a job
In my opinion “documenting” and sharing the journey to learning, is a threat to actually doing deep work that will develop the skills and depth you need to have something to say later.

For anyone snuggling and frustrated...when you can just sit and listen to the advice given, without all the preconceived assumptions and concerns running through your head, many times the answer is just right there in front of you. Chis is giving some golden advice here and it just seems like some are too stuck in their head to actually listen. The best way to learn and elevate yourself is to trust the teacher, assume you know nothing, and just listen.
When i had no portfolio, i had the same skill. But it was hard work to gain trust of people. I worked on my portfolio. Now, the trust aspect is achieved and price negotiation is the only concern. But the client is now willing to negotiate vs no trust at all. And, i get more clients via existing clients.

There's NO one I know and a team dropping such VALUE each and every time. Also they are not trying to desperately BUILD a list...(even though that list grows) or bombarding you with CTA's, even though they have them (online courses, Chris' tours), it's done SO WELL, there's NO RESISTANCE to wanting to purchase, because by the time I see an offer from their channel, or an Ad, I'M ALREADY A LOYAL CONVIINCED FOLLOWER, that Futur has EXCEPTIONAL VALUE, and I NEED everything they are selling.

@@mosesdabah well I was very lucky to have found an inside sales role in the pharma industry! I can practice my sales skills without feeling like I "wasted" my degree. On the side, I'm working on trying to grow on Instagram and learning more about entrepreneurship :) what are you currently doing?
I always believe that everyone has a story to tell, I always wonder who wants to hear me. Just do it and grow, not just audience but also on your journey.
What a great video! Listen guys at the end of the day it comes down to experience. You’re doubting yourself because you’re saying to yourself “I don’t have that much experience compared to others” WHO CARES! Just get out there and DO! Continue to master your craft. Do what chris said and don’t be afraid to share your perspective. If you just stick with it the inevitable will present itself and you’ll wake up one day and you’ll know you’re a badass lol! Being compensated by “this is what I do” versus being compensated by “This is who I am” or “this is who I have become,” puts you in a different sales position - which takes time and venturing.
One important issue here your sentence is missing: 'This is what I do for YOU'. Their pain and problem at the forefront.

12:23 I find very interesting when people who are learning something shares what she/he has being doing because usually they have a lot of enthusiasm and are discovering older resources (books, people keen to that area of interest) as well as new resources because either they go to formal school or read a lot. That's a lot of value. Also you can see in their recent videos how their ideas or concepts about their topic of interest is maturing or shaping for good
I'm specializing in visual identity for healthcare and this is exactly what I needed right now. If I had one thing to say for all you guys, it's that people call you because they think you know more than they do on a specific problem. Find the big issues for you to solve for the client and you will be confident about the true value of your work.

My perspective on weaknesses is that there are none.
It always depends on the perspective and the circumstances.
Chris gave this great example where he turn 'being young' from a weakness to a strength and I believe the same can be done for any trait.
Looking for details all the time is a good trait as accountant but might get you stuck as when you have to focus on the big picture as a CEO.
Being funny all the time might not be suited in a situation where you have to make serious decisions.
So, there are only traits or preferences that fit better in some circumstances than in others.
The art is to know how and when to use these traits and to be aware of the consequences.
As I mentor & coach individuals in their careers + businesses - I often run into them asking "But how do I know I'm not a fraud." I used to spend hours explaining core steps towards confidence development + tracking successes. Now I just send them this video

I feel that it doesn’t matter how old you are, that you have the opportunity to learn something new from every person you interact with, however big or small small that piece of information is. I learn from students everyday and they are from 11 to 18 years of age, they can approach tasks in a way I’ve not considered, or teach me things that are a part of their culture, even something as small as the meaning of a new slang word being used by them. We are always learning, and age doesn’t matter when it comes to the teacher you learn from if they teach you something you didn’t know and now previously.

I get what he's saying about trying to look like the professional charging a lot being/looking so young. Although I agree your work will speak for itself, you can't always expect people just to find you through your work online. You Will have to visit businesses, set up meetings and sell yourself especially when your coming up. My best advice for his question would to look professional and be confident when your meeting with people. Have a portfolio to show for and never negotiate on your prices because you lower your worth at that point. You don't need every job you need the right ones.

this a big problem with school, all teachers say to be broad and not focus on one path, but once you go out to the job world you need to clearly go for one direction UI, Logo, digital, Print, yes they are interchangeable, also school seams like they have teachers that just are there for the pay check and are not there to help students grow or achieve a job

For anyone snuggling and frustrated...when you can just sit and listen to the advice given, without all the preconceived assumptions and concerns running through your head, many times the answer is just right there in front of you. Chis is giving some golden advice here and it just seems like some are too stuck in their head to actually listen. The best way to learn and elevate yourself is to trust the teacher, assume you know nothing, and just listen.

When i had no portfolio, i had the same skill. But it was hard work to gain trust of people. I worked on my portfolio. Now, the trust aspect is achieved and price negotiation is the only concern. But the client is now willing to negotiate vs no trust at all. And, i get more clients via existing clients.
