4 Reasons Catholics Must Give Alms This Lent

  • What are alms? Why must we give them? Am I supposed to go broke for Jesus?
    Fr. Mike Schmitz encourages us to be charitable this Lent, emphasizing how almsgiving is a foundational part of living the Faith. In being joyful givers, we imitate Christ, who became poor for our sake, and we show our gratitude for God’s grace. These are just a few of the reasons Fr. Mike offers in this video as to why we should exercise almsgiving according to our means.

    I will never forget when I was attending, and ushering at, an inner city parish. When I came to one man with the basket, he held out an old pill bottle with change in it and dumped the change in the basket with a huge smile on his face. After mass I saw him pushing his shopping cart through the street. He was homeless.
    That is gratitude and joy in giving!! Thank you Father!🙏

    I fully understood the idea of "not let the left hand know what the right is doing" until my father died. People came forward telling me of money my father gave them, things he did for them, etc. We found out that my father-in-law had done the same. We had no knowledge of these gifts being given to others. They didn't tell us, brag, etc.

    I gave too much in the past, and I ran into debt. It is important you give to the right people who will not take advantage of your kindness. I will give my talent to the Church this Lent, I’m still struggling to pay off my debts which resulted from giving to the wrong people.

    I’m so weary. I want to give up. The devil wants me to lose my faith but God won’t allow it. Since covid I fell on a terrible hardship, like many others. I lost my job for declining the vaccine. I declined due to my health conditions. I suffer from lupus, and heart disease. I’m now waitressing but not making nearly enough to get by. I’m a single mom, my husband is with God. I still miss him dearly. My children are autistic and non verbal, I’m overwhelmed they require so much from me. I recently started homeschooling them due to them having do many issues in school. Jesus hear my prayers. I’m tired of struggling every single month. I can’t even afford the tools I need to homeschool my boys. But I trust in you Jesus even as I struggle providing groceries for my children. I’m ashamed. I feel like a failure. I get harassed and put down for sharing my testimony. I only keep pushing because of Christ. Walking with faith not by sight!

    I was frantically searching in my purse before the light changed and she was walking to me the light changed and people in front of me moved but she saw the money and reached for it pleading and said GodBless you to me and I had to drive away. I thought that could be me. I wished I’d given her more but I don’t usually carry cash with me.

    Something our parish used to do (not anymore, sadly 🥺) was present the collection baskets to the altar along with the gifts so people would really understand that their offerings were for God. With the money collection basket, an Intentions basket that was presented as well. If they wished, parishioners wrote down the intentions--anonymously--held in their hearts and prayed for at the Mass. This gave all of us a chance to meaningfully pray for others. We saw the intentions on the altar and, while we didn't know what they said, we were praying for our fellow parishioners. Likewise, those who wrote the intentions were offering their suffering to God; something only humans can give to God. It was a beautiful way that EVERYONE could give alms. I don't know why they stopped, but I miss it terribly. Now it's just blended into the Prayers of the Faithful IF the lector remembers to include it.

    • @epicmeow7688
      @epicmeow7688 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @timboslice980

      Protestants are too Christians. The pope even said so... check out the lesson from Mark 9 38-39. The passage about the outside exorcist driving out demons in the name of Jesus. The apostles complained that he wasn't in their group but jesus rebuked them and said one cannot perform miracles in my name and then say something bad about me in the next moment. For he who is not against us is for us.... still personally catholic is the way to go. We take scripture tradition and history to a whole new level.

    • @timboslice980
      @timboslice980 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glennherron9499 Theres not a single catholic in the entire 1.5 billion of us that believe that. Listen to the nicene creed sometime. Submission to the church that Jesus is the head of is submission to christ. Remember all of the church was the catholic church until the EO broke away. Even still the doctrines between the two churches are so similar they only have 1 real point of debate between them. So for the 1st 1500 years you have this 1 visible church all teaching almost the same thing till protestants come along. Now we have so many denominations and interpretations of the Bible as you can count. Every day huge churches are breaking apart and dividing over a single issue or just flavor no theology. Protestants have made a mockery of the church to an outsider it looks like we can't agree on a single thing. Even the messianic jews dispute using the name Jesus.

    • @timboslice980
      @timboslice980 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@glennherron9499 sure does..... how is it the mother of my lord should come to me?

    • @timboslice980
      @timboslice980 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glennherron9499 no catholic believes that Jesus isn't the one that saves us or our separated brethren. The church itself is simply an extension of christ. He said unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have no life in you. Almost everyone walked away... did you ever wonder why Jesus didn't stop them and say "hey chill guys it was just a metaphor!" Or you think jesus is like I'll just say the craziest thing I can think of to say and see who stays and who goes. He meant it. Paul says those that abuse the eucharist bring death, sickness, or some other punishment upon themselves. There are many words in Aramaic that are synonymous with the English word 'represents'. Only 1 word that means 'is' which do you think christ chose to use? How could this be confusing at all? Our lord is not the author of confusion. In every case of christ using a parable either he or the gospel writer will explain that what he is talking about is in fact a parable. This would be the only time in the Bible where christ uses a parable without saying he is doing it or the gospel writer. Imagine if he did explain that it was a parable, would the multitude still have walked away? No it was important to see that on some level Jesus is being literal. Even Peter says where would we go? Only you have the words of eternal life. So my suggestion is if you want to get to heaven maybe take the eucharist seriously as Paul at least.

    Fr. Mike, I've just watched this video as well as Fr. Mark Goring and Fr. Nathan Dail's latest videos - all 3 are absolutely perfect!
    Thank you for your encouragement to us to give alms.
    I've had a bad experience doing so on the feast day of my parish 2 months ago and ended up being disappointed and angry with the dishonest people who were in charge of this special alms collection, mainly because I put in a lot of thought into it and parted ways with some of my favourite items which can't be purchased anymore.
    But not to be discouraged.
    God bless.🙏🙏

    So much to think about, very encouraging to dig a bit deeper from our substance. It's inspiring as well to hear about the great work of many Christian charities around the world and see how our giving can make a difference. I would encourage people to look into Mary's Meals - feeding children in the name of Our Blessed Mother.

    I find that when I give a good monthly amount of money, my heart becomes liberated from attachment to it and trust in money, because my trust is not in money that supports me materialistically, but my trust is in Jesus Who grants me health and employment to generate the income with which He entrusts me.
