You could use a coin to open the gap without damaging the tube, just put a coin that fits in the gap and then put the bolt from the other side, when u screw it in, it would start opening the gap pushing against the coin, it works with the stems that are to tight.

Thank you. My seatpost is 27.2 mm. I have my Benotto bike since 1985. I have done many upgradres at my bike. I will never sell it because it's the only thing that I have from my father. When I ride a bike, I think about him. Thanks

Here is a suggestion for you that is less likely to damage the paint, only works where the seatpost clamp is part of the frame as in this video. Remove the clamp bolt and thread it in from the other side, put a penny in the slot and tighten the clamp bolt against it, you can now adjust the gap without the risk of slipping and damaging your paint/stabbing yourself. Also works on old style stems 👍😊

RJ, thanks for posting this video. It was very helpful. I just purchased a 1992 Raleigh Competition that requires an extreme amount of pressure to get the seat post to stay. The current seat post measures 25mm, but after some research on the internet, I believe the particular model I have requires a 25.8mm post. I think the extra 0.8mm smaller diameter is where my problem lies. I just ordered a replacement on eBay that is supposed to be 25.8mm. Your video was the only one I could find that has same one bolt design of seat post clamp like I have.

I bought an old bike a few months ago that had the seat post shimmed with duct tape. It was a mess to clean up the old adhesive inside the tube and on the seat post. I also saw on Steel is Real a trick for cleaning up the seat post from burrs, they used a brake cylinder hone. This keeps the seat post nice and scratch free. Just thought Iwould share.

I found with a lot of old steel bikes that the clamp was compressed super tight or the wrong shim was used and you have to pry it open again if you want to use the propper size seatpost. Lucky you can coldset steel frames without damaging it. Alloy is basically runined at this point.

Lugs are made to a standard size but tubing is various thicknesses.as a consequence the finer the tube the larger the seat post.
It is possible to use a smaller seat post and wedge shaped shim to open the hole and split lug which needs to stay circular, avoiding stress to the bolt eyes.

I have a similar problem with my Peugeot road bike from 1976. The last seatpost was so thin, that the former owner deformed the clamp by tightening it and also deformed slightly the diameter of the seat tube. Its hard to estimate the proper seatpost diameter now. What would you do? I am afraid of breaking the clamp when I try to bend it up...

  • @syrinxtegelaers155

I was just wondering about that because I have a bicycle with a seatpost so tight on the frame that the bolt is a little bit bent.
Also, the seatpost is stuck on the frame so I sprayed some WD-40 to losen it up a bit. Hopefully it will come out and I can start fixing it.

Aside from the screw-driver trick, do you have any tips for how to expand a seat tube that has been over-tightened? I've done the steel wool on a coat hanger + drill routing, my seat tube is now super smooth, but with a screw driver I haven't been able to open up the notch at all. Nearly the problem i am facing with my rebuilt bike, i need a longer seat post but cannot find one that is exactly 25.4mm I have checked 2 and they were both out by a TINY amount which falls in or if tightened, squashes the frame tube to nearly touching. Infuriating :)

Hey RJ! I have no idea what my classic bike is until now hence the seatpost database is a bit toast. However I'm still betting mine is a 26.8 (a 27.2 does not fit on my seattube). I'm currently running a 25.4 with a homemade shim lol.
But in case, can I measure the seat tube diameter and base off that? Or is it still thicker than the inside? Cheers.

  • @bens3067

if you couldnt find a list, how about measuring the diameter of the tube about 4 inches down from the top of the tube. then take measurements of the thickness of the tube, and subtract that amount times 2 , wouldnt this give you your inside diameter measurement?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy

Good Day. I was given a beautiful Norco bicycle, with a expanded bicycle seat tube. I Researched the correct size, which is 27.2. The previous owner attempted to install a much larger seat post which damaged the seat tube, by being pried open for the larger seat post. It is a quick release system. I would like to know how to reform/ reshape the seat tube. Any information would be much appreciated. I looked at your videos and you didn't cover this subject, maybe a new video, is in hand. I’m having issues installing a seat post into a bmx. I took out the old one as it was beat up really bad and am replacing it with a new one. Both are 25.4 mm posts but the new one won’t make it in more than a couple of inches. It stops at the end of the split in the seat tube. I’ve sprayed it with lubricant but no difference. I can maybe bang it in with a mallet but am scared I won’t ever get it out again or even be able to adjust the height if need be. Any ideas? My next step is to freeze the new post which should shrink it slightly and heat the seat tube with a hair dryer which should expand that slightly.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy

There are a huge variety of sizes. I don't know what yours is. The little slot on mine was pinched almost completely closed. So I knew it was the too small. On an aluminum frame you are more likely to crack the frame. Even on a steel frame it is possible to damage it, trying to repair abuse like this. But it is possible yours came with a small size.

    • @TheRealDx
      @TheRealDx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

It'd be really interesting it came with a small size (26.2) considering it's aluminum and that the US catalog mentions a seatpost diameter of 27.2. Guess they marketed a different size for the South American market. It's second time I find a different seatpost diameter than the catalog's in US bikes sold in SA.

Never thought bending the seatpost housing.
I already grind the seatpost tube to make a little gap for my seatpost.

You shouldn't have to. Use the proper sized seatpost.

@@RJTheBikeGuyyes, my fault not watched your video earlier,
After already grind the seatpost housing, the seatpost still loose and keep twisting to right and left, plus know i already increase the seatpost size but its keep twist to the left and right
I found same oil on the old seatpost, does it contribute to the twisting seatpost?
Do you have any suggestions how to stop my twisting seatpost?
      Thankss

@@angelm6090 Then maybe you have the wrong sized seatpost. Maybe you are not clamp it tight enough. If it's a carbon seatpost, you need a special paste. The should be a thin coating of grease on the seatpost.

You should epoxy your garage floor and make a video about it

I live opposite a garage in Wales and if you got scrap metal you leave it there and every day the pikeys pick it up so my mate left 2 bike's there a Schwinn and a giant so I stripped and cleaned the giant and made 1 bike out of 2 it all worked looked lovely . I saw him again a couple of days later and he asked me to keep an eye out for a second hand bike as a spare he doesn't drive . So I said I got one and he jumped at it without seeing it because I look after my bike's so he gave me the £60 asking price and I gave him his bike back 😂😂😂😂😂😂
