The choice is kind of clear for me:
    * If you need a productivity laptop, both are great, but the higher quality screen, better speakers, more efficent hardware, and a $100 gap, I think the macbook it's clearly the best... Unless your workflow depends on native Windows/Linux or on the x86 architecture.
    * If you need a portable gaming laptop, go for the surface one, no matter how great these M1 Pros/Max are, the fact we don't have native games running on macos or M1 architecture makes windows laptops the best option for gaming. I know developers could port their games to macs, but maybe not worth for most of them (since all serious gamers use windows), at least not now, and it could take several years from now to see a decent gaming library running natively on macos.
    TL;DR
Productivity => MacBook Pro* ; Gaming => Surface Laptop

" if you have constraints, that mean you don't have a choice - then go with the SLS. If you have fewy limitations, it is a no-brainer. You can go with the MacBook. It is a better machine for the same money." haha.
In truth, I can't argue with you.
I have an SLS and have some constraints, so I am happy with it.
      I really love this PC.
I will NEVER again get a PC that doesn't have touch or pen input. I won't do it. Having those is so powerful when you need them. I don't use them, only sometimes, but when I need to, there they are, which is fantastic.
Moving the screen to watch shows etc., is fab, and when you pull the screen forward, it enhances the bass a great deal making watching things more immersive.
It is a svelt package, and I love carrying it around using it. I had a surface book2 I thought I would use until my hands were cold and stubby. I really liked using that machine. It was awesome. However, I like the SLS even more.
      Problem: Battery life.
After saying all I have said above - I would contemplate moving over specifically and exclusively for battery life.
Battery anxiety is real, and I can't stand it.
This PC needs to last longer.
      That is a fact.
      It just does.
I get about 3-6 hrs with it, which is just not enough.
Something has to be done with Windows PCs.

The SB3 and SB1 feel exactly the same with and I can 100% get my job and school work done. But other than that computer my entire house is Apple products. I recently got a iPad Air 4 as part of a program with my school and I find the Apple Pencil way more responsive when writing notes, organic chem, and physics. I’m curious how well the iPad works in the apple ecosystem with the MacBook.

    • @qvattr0
      @qvattr0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@cavincurrin362 The iPad interacts with the ecosystem (that includes a MacBook) quite... well. The primary benefits you'll be reaping are generally associated with connectivity and ease of transition between the devices. To be more precise, you get iCloud on both devices (assuming that you use it), and can essentially transfer work between the devices easily. For instance, I use Notability on my iPad to take notes for my courses, and having access to my notes on my MacBook through iCloud syncing (Notability is also available on macOS) has been convenient. I use other Apple native apps (Calendar, notes, etc.) too, but the story is the same for those. I must however mention that the iCloud feature can be replicated (for non-native Apple apps like Notability) on a Windows machine by just using Google Drive (or other cloud storage platform of preference), albeit at the cost of minor convenience. The other benefit that might not apply to you is the capacity of using more powerful versions of applications that are available on iPadOS/iOS (the ones I use are Spark and Things 3). Having the capability of using these applications both on the laptop and the iPad (trading feature-set and speed of usage for mobility) is quite pleasant. If someone, who's indifferent towards macOS and Windows OS, asked me if getting a MacBook Pro is worth it for the aforementioned benefits, I'd be quite hesitant to respond (although I'm quite skewed towards the new MacBook Pros as they've become an extremely good package compared to the previous iterations). There is, however, one feature that I would recommend the MacBook Pro for: sidecar. It's essentially a feature that allows you to use a compatible iPad (fortunately, your iPad Air 4 is compatible, but double check just in case) as a second screen for your MacBook (wired or wirelessly). I've been using it for the last week and have been very happy with the productivity boost that it offers me. I'll mention that I'm an engineering student who also studies physics; as such, some of the things we do might overlap. Sidecar was the reason behind why I got a MacBook Pro (new gen, I wouldn't recommend going for Intel alternatives). I own a Razer Blade Pro, and before the purchase, carried it around the campus and the lack of a second monitor was quite annoying. I tried to find a software solution on Windows, but most were very unreliable and inferior compared to Sidecar (not to mention the ease with which you can start Sidecar on macOS) I suppose Focus deserves a mention too as it's been quite convenient having it activate across all my devices, but it is a very small benefit.

The problems lies with the Intel chip itself and perhaps supplying a slower SSD. So now you have the problem of Intel inefficient CPU (repackaged, tweaked CPU from few generations ago) along with a substandard SSD. Probably to off set the GPU cost. I’ve always said the mics on these new MacBooks are a bit quiet for some reason - but the actual sound quality is excellent.
Second, I haven’t actually (technically) used either device but we all know what a MacBook’s build quality feels like at this point. The surface looks to be pretty good, especially compared to other Windows laptops.

A neat video as always! Some thoughts if I may:
    1. Load up some more stressful tests in Blender. While Party Tug is great, we're splitting hairs over a second or so per frame. Throw Classroom, Gooseberry, or practically anything else for a good Blender test that takes minutes and it'd be nice to see how the machines perform.
    2. Would you re-test the Davinci Resolve export without the low battery throttle? Not that I don't doubt the Mac would still win, but it would be neat to see a fair time.
    3. Maybe load up a couple games that are available cross-platform (FFXIV's benchmark) or other than 3D Mark. While the 3D Mark suite is good, it's still simulating a game vs loading and engaging with a real one.
Otherwise since you cover all the awesome hardware, it'll be cool to see the mobile version of Alder Lake 12th Gen Intel since they have supposedly made some great strides against Apple and AMD! Keep it up!

Thanks for the video. Pretty thourough comparisons overall.👍 Just one thing.
In the end you ask the question, "Is it worth spending $100 dollars more for the Surface Laptop Studio rather than the MacBook Pro?" and then you highlighlight some of the differences such as cameras, performance etc., but you omit in that final summary analysis, one very critical difference: the context-conforming functionality of the Surface Laptop Studio with a touch and inking focus designed with creators who want a portable studio/drafting table tool combined with power. It is the synergy of that functionality and power that Microsoft is targeting toward a specific market of creators.
That market knows who they are. Anyone besides tech geeks who just want cool tech, and a small subset of other creators who are considering buying the Surface Laptop Studio are considering it specifically because of the adjustable display and the inking/drawing/drafting capabilities that this, as a tool, will fit into thier workflow.
When reviewers mention that functionality, or brush past it, but then conclude the review without placing the devices into the broader context of who the devices are targeted toward, without strongly highlighting the functionality within the context of the audience it is designed for and concluding with a mere "clamshell laptop vs clamshell laptop" context acknowledging only the "generic differences: performance, cameras, etc. and gloss over the true differentiator that makes the products innately and functionally different, you miss the broader context.
When done in that fashion it appears that the comparison is motivated more by a surface level "Latest form Microsoft vs Latest from Apple" rather than the more nuanced, real world and realistic - "Who are each of these products for, how does the synergy of design,, form factor and performance serve that target audience, where do the target audiences of these two devices overlap (Picture a Venn Diagram), where does each products design, form factor, performance exclusively serve a particular segment (again picture a Venn Diagram where the products don't overlap), etc.
All of these types of nuanced perspectives have to be acknowledged particularly when comparing fundamentally different products with fundamentally different target markets. We can't just highly focus on the areas that overlap (in this case clamshell laptop use) when the SLS is intentionally and functionally designed as a portable studio for art, drafting, presenting etc.
When you ask that final question, ""Is it worth paying $100 more for the Surface Laptop Studio" the answer from most of the people seriously considering this device, Microsoft's target market, who are looking at it primarily for that synergy of adaptable form factor, inking and performance, would likely answer a resounding, "Yes", since it fits a particular work flow that the strictly clamshell, non-touchscreen, inking incapable Mac Book Pro cannot meet despite its other advantages.
Analogy: If a landscaper (a type of artist🙂) is looking for the latest nicely built vehicle, with a known brand name, great build and power to use to carry his equipment between jobs - a 2021 Ford F150 Pickup might be in his sights.
Now someone can decide to compare the latest, nicely designed 2021 Porsche to the Ford F150 this landscaper is considering. They may highlight its sleeker design and how it can outperforms the F150 in going from 0 to 60 in a certain amount of time; and they may conclude the comparison focusing on the speed, sleekness, and other features while not mentioning that the F150 has space in the back to carry large equipment. The two may be the latest and greatest from each company, and they may even overlap in some areas(both can be used as commuter vehicles to drive from point A and B and drive around town), but they are fundamentally targeted at two different consumers and it is for those distinct audiences where these distinct vehicle form factors and specific uses don't overlap.
The landscaper, would buy the truck because as a tool it fits his needs and a reviewer comparing the teo vehicles must be sure to really highlight the different audiences and functionality of each vehicle, not just the areas where they overlap.👍👍🙂
Thanks again for the video.Your videos are very thourough in what they cover. Hopefully this comment will be taen to heart and we'll see some more comparisons stressing the different markets for these devices to see more clearly where the strengths in real world use for *the specific markets* the devices are made for really apply and the factors that are valued for specific target markets so that those values can be compared appropriately when measuring one device against another. Because for the target market of the Surface Laptop Studio, the adaptable form factor, touch and inking as a portable studio is something that has high value, where the performance doesn't have to be top of tbe line as long as it handles the users workflow. Adaptable form-factor/inking/touch/Performance synergy is key for the Surface Laptop Studio market market.
Just some thoughts. I'd like to hear your feedback and hope thus critical assessment isn't deleted. Lets talk.🙂👍

It's a damn good laptop on top of being able to replace my Wacom Cintiq Pro 24, and make it a sexy mobile graphic tablet. The comparison just cannot be made "In favor" of the Macbook without mentionning this. The review here is only showing the Surface is very capable when fighting with the market dominating laptop, performance wise. Otherwise, to test the MacBook M1, you'd have to find his proper opponents on the market. Anyway.. Thanks OP I suggest you start your own reviewing channel :)

@@olivierleroy9432 Thanks Oliver. I’m glad the point was well received and hope varying perspectives such as this are taken seriously to offer a broader and more real world perspective of how these different devices are used, who uses them and who they are targeted toward toward.
A benchmark focused assessment with little to no stressing of the deliberately designed form factor and other distinct attributes (ie inking) provides a very narrow view of the devices and doesn’t account for the Surface Laptop Studies purposed design for a specific audience for whom that design has value.👍🙂

Awesome comparison Max I really respect your unbiased comparisons. The M1 is undoubtedly a performance beast and that is where it excels at. I would say, however, that unless you are a video editor the Surface is the most complete machine. Surface Studio is about versatility, it's about allowing you to use touch and pen input. If you don't care about these, the mac is better. For me however, I can imagine getting a device without touch in 2021. Definitely a great contest. I’d say for a digital artist, 3D designer or whatnot then the Surface is close to perfect. We’re now at a point where 14” laptops can render 4K video faster than real time but the true powerhouses in the category like the MacBook Pro 14, Zephryus G14 or Blade 14 can do it at close to twice real time. That’s insane. The Surface suffers from battery life that the MacBook and G14 excel at, but all 4 are excellent overall. Sucks they all start at £1,500 and above, but even MacBook Air and Acer Swift X with the 3050 Ti aren’t far off these if you want something light but still decently powerful at around £1,000. What a time to be getting into editing!
