Thanks for this! Your video convinced me to always use the crotch strap I added to my Mustang hydro-static. I've already added a water-activated strobe internally as well as a flashlight and knife on the webbing. PLB is next on the list.
Side note: James, if you don't know about Zenni - you can replace those glasses for about $10 at Zenni Optical. I have no relation to them, I simply have used them for years now and LOVE how easy to get new glasses.
I nearly drowned two weeks ago and both sides inflated. Mine also rode up and was choking me. You had a wet suit, try it with clothes on and a sweatshirt. I think these are death traps and went back to clip style with heavier straps.
Safety tip: everyone should be opening up their automatic vests and inflating them manually every so often and making sure they hold air for a day or so (then you log the date it was checked on the inflatable - see the square box visible at 3:19). Stay safe!
Here in Sweden i always buy Baltic Automatic PFD's and they have that bottom strap that goes between your legs. And they usually cost about 900 SEK which is about $100.
You should not be wearing it that loose in the first place. I would recommend you do it again fitted properly. They are meant to be VERY tight fitting. Especially if there is no crouch strap. Even tightly fitted they still ride up but that was crazy it was hanging off you man!
WiIl they still work if your wearing heavy winter bibs and jacket? I walleye fish in extreme cold temperatures and looking for something more streamline because i wear such heavy bulky cloths such as insulated Carhart bibs and jacket but im worried the extra weight when they get wet and if these inflatables will work. ANd putting a regular life jacket over my heavy cloths is just way to bulky..
james and camille, I am thinking about buying an Excalibur, 26' that is gutted on the inside. He has all of the trim pieces but nothing else. two problems. I've never done anything like this, all the inside work (but I want to very badly) and I have never sailed alone. I've been sailing a few times but it was years ago. Anyways, could I possibly pick your brain when i do buy it for some pointers and maybe even hire you to help me, at least help me plan it so I can draw it. Im a mechanical design engineer and I use solidworks 3d program to design/draw.. I live in homeland ca, 15 miles from riverside. John White
You can do it, just be prepared to make mistakes and redo things sometimes, I still do this even with all my experience. I have too much boat work of mine own to do to work on other people’s boats other than very rare occasions. A 26’ boat is a great size to learn on and I am happy to give you any advice you need !

Jumping in the water at marinas is a good way to get electrocuted and drown. (if the marina has shore power) All and all a very good lesson for all of us ! Thanks Cheers
In a freshwater marina you might be correct but in saltwater it’s very very unlikely, how do you think all the boats bottoms are cleaned? If you grab a boats prop shaft or a metal dock that has a short you might get zapped but it’s very uncommon

The advantage of an Automatic PFD is that they actually get used because you tend to forget about them after putting them on.
Velcro on those things need to be opened and closed many times to weaken the hook and loops...then everything will work fine.
