  • OBD port relocation to stop OBD port car theft / keyless car theft.
    While nothing can absolutely prevent your vehicle from being stolen, layering security may help to get a thief/thieves to move on to the next target. Thieves also target vehicles to be stolen using the OBD2 port that are on most vehicles made since 1996.
    If you’ve watched our other video on using an OBD port lock but aren’t able to find one for your particular model of vehicle or would rather spend less money then the OBD port relocation DIY may be for you.
    In this video, find out how to relocate your OBD port and install a dummy OBD port in its place.

    Doesn't this just splits the port between 2 plugs?

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question: This is indeed a splitter cable. But the way I was mentioning to use it is not to plug the original OBD cable into the splitter cable when doing this DIY. This way the dummy port doesn't work.

    • @Music-cq8nr
      @Music-cq8nr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @FrakkingCreations I guess I don't see why a splitter cable would be suggested when you could just plug up an extender for the odb and leave the other end not connected

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I chose this splitter cable due to the two different plug ends. Different vehicles have slightly different setups and as I mentioned in the video, one of the plug ends fit the demoed vehicle better than the other. For one cable, the user has an option to pick the one that fits best.
      Also, after I bought the one used in the video, I found another similar cable that also comes with an adapter plate for using screws to attach the OBD cable to the vehicle. This is the link for the "OBD Splitter cable 1" in the video description.
      Viewers can now have 3 options to choose from when trying to do this DIY. Sometimes it's hard to tell which one you need so hopefully this helps them.
      Edit: I also provided other cable options that could be used and our viewers can pick one that works best for them, including extension cables.

    A smart man would booby trap the fake connector with high-amperage 12V Or perhapsa seperate 24V battery. To destroy the attackers dongle or computer USB ports.

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've seen people suggest this and it does sound like an interesting idea. I haven't seen anyone try this and then test to see what happens. It's definitely dangerous and comes with some added responsibilities on your part if you don't want you or anyone, their property or your property to get hurt or damaged.
      I would think that you will need to include a fuse in that setup or the person using the OBD port that is booby trapped could cause a fire to your vehicle and/or their equipment. They could also get hurt. Without a fuse that get's very dangerous (Not that a fuse alone makes it "safe").
      Also consider:
      - Every time you take your vehicle in for servicing at an auto shop or dealership, you will have inform them that you have trapped the original OBD port and that they should not use it. Either that or you will have to disable the trap before the service and re-enable after the service. If you don't and they do try to use the port, it could damage their equipment and you would be on the hook to replace it (Could be thousands of dollars for you). Also, a fire could break out causing damage to their facilities or hurting the mechanic. Sometimes mechanics use the OBD port legitimately to scan for faults, pending faults and sometimes dealerships apply updates to the firmware of the vehicle. These are likely and legitimate scenarios.
      - When you sell your vehicle, you have to remember to remove the trap. Also, during the selling process, the potential buyer may ask to take the vehicle to get inspected or may want to use their own reader to access the OBD port to scan for fault codes and pending codes. You will have to inform them or disable the trap.
      - Also, some places have annual emissions testing that has to be passed before your vehicle registration can be renewed in order for it to be road legal. If you trap your OBD port, then you better make sure you remember to undo the trap and restore the original port before going for the emissions test.
      All in all, more responsibilities.
      A smart man would think twice before trapping the OBD port.

    Now more than ever this idea is a must have.
    Vehicle theft is up over 58% in some areas compared to just 2 years ago.
    While not for everyone, what I've done to the fake port, is to criss-cross 12V pos/neg pins and connect it to a 12V fuse connection.
    So some pins are pos, others are neg, all across the fake port.
    The idea here, is that if a thief does get into the vehicle and ignore the Club on the steering wheel and the brake pedal, and he plugs in his little device, his device will be fried like a burning steak on the BBQ. The fuse will blow to save the vehicle.

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've heard many people suggest connecting the pins of the fake OBD port to power but never heard of anyone actually doing it. I'm sure it will damage the hacking device a thief has. Have you ever tried to test it using a cheap OBD reader? Would be an interesting to know what would actually happen, though extreme caution may be required to prevent potential injury or damage to property.
      Also, you might want to make sure to tell anyone using your vehicle not to use the fake OBD port... anyone borrowing your car, your mechanic, future owner of the vehicle when you sell it, etc.

      @@FrakkingCreations This was just an idea. I wasn't sure if I'll actually do it.
      That last part of your comment is a major concern.
      It would not be beyond me to forget to inform someone about it.
      But worse, I may forget and plug in my device.
      I just bought a nice Mucar CDE900 Pro scanner.
      I wouldn't want to accidentally blow it up by forgetting to use the right port. LOL
      So I'm not sure what I'll do there.
      I may just buy one of those keyed locks that cover it and/or I may decide to install a hidden kill switch. Kill switch = old school that still works. LOL

    I've been looking for a dummy OBD port for a 2014 Charger SRT8, and not even the dummyobd website has it.
    Any idea where I can get one? Or do I just get a normal one and sabotage it?

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

      I provided links to several cable options in the video description. Pick one that is similar to your OBD port.
      If you are going to sabotage it you will have to be very careful.

    Go for the gusto ...
    Put in a fake port for sure, but keep a powered-up capacitor hooked to it.
    Something with a 'little bite' to it.
    Makes the theft of your vehicle and the demise of the guy's hand tool
    just a little more exciting.
    I am sure one can devise a way of doing this. Definitely tell your garage you have re-arranged your OBDII port though!
    Just a thought.

      It's hard to say without seeing it.
      Consider buying one of the OBD extension cables that come with screw holes that can be used to attach to the car. You can then use screws to attach the extension cable end to plastic paneling under your dash and then plug the original OBD cable into the other end of the extension.
      I have a link in the video description to such a cable. Checkout the one called "OBD Splitter cable 1"
      Hope that helps.

    On computers we have this thing called a "password". Maybe we could have a password to enable access to certain functions on the vehicle.

    • @DesertStateNevada
      @DesertStateNevada ปีที่แล้ว

      Passwords can be bypassed or cracked. Thats only a half measure. Preventing access to your car's electronics is whats best.

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @billmcc64 One of the issues with car computers is that they have been very basic and systems are not designed with security in mind. Even if they put a password screen or pin entry it may not be enough because it is still possible to hack through other means. For example, like connecting hacking devices to the OBD port, the car's WiFi and in some cases through the wires that power the headlights. These all connect to the vehicle's bus system to the main computers without protection or security.

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course. The original OBD will not be connected to the visible dummy port.
      Be sure to reconnect your original port before going to get your vehicle inspected for emissions testing.

    Can you simply use a (or two) security screws and screw it in the middle of the obd port. This shouldn't short any wires and would not allow anything to plug into the port.

    • @FrakkingCreations
      @FrakkingCreations  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a possibility. Just have to be careful still as you have metal screws close to the pins. It's possible to have the screws or screwdriver accidentally touch the pins as you are screwing the screws in.
      I believe one of the universal OBD locks I recommend uses something like this to "lock" a cover over the port. Check out our other video if you're interested. I have links for the universal lock in the description of that video.

      There isn't a specific OBD port lock to the Jeeps so you would have to choose one of the 2 universal models. You would have to check with the seller as to which one would fit better.

    I am sure they could secure most if not all the issues so you don't see an empty parking space in the morning.
