    My ex-gf's father passed away as the result of a plane crash caused by ice on the wings. He was flying with Tony Bettenhausen (Bettenhausen Racing) over Tennessee in a twin engine Cessna. Tony had just been multi-engine qualified and apparently didn't have the autovibrate for the ice. Needless to say they went into a flat spin. Four perished. Pay attention to ice!

    'Making it up as you go' is NOT how professional pilots do it. You need to take the International Procedures Initial course from FlightSafety, and you are legally required to review the AIP for each country you operate through. There's no excuse for just bumbling around.

      I agree with you.
      I did my VFR in the US and my IFR in Europe. I understand that in the US everything about aviation is taken less serious. Telecomms are sloppy, procedures are guidelines. So that's where this guy gets his attitude from.
      Once you start flying in a really crowded airspace like Europe, you start realizing that preparation is half the work involved in flying.
      So I did watch this feeling cringy most of the time. Not a video I would recommend to anybody.

    I have flown a lot in the UK, and in particular actually learned to fly in a Tiger Moth at Shoreham, so am very familiar with the Seaford/Lydde routings. We had to land at Lydde and then fly over the channel on the Light aircraft corridor,and I agree with you that the GA systems in the US are one heck of a lot more user friendly than the UK, where light aircraft are most illegal in pretty well all controlled airspace., and by the way the infringement penalties ARE SEVERE! I really enjoyed this video, and applaud you for finding the time to make and edit it, well done.

    Hi Matt just love your VLOG! As a frustrated pilot living in Plymouth UK, I am following your epic trip from the US to Europe. Love your coverage such as different camera angles, narration, GREAT music, drone footage & experiences (Haggis/Castles!!) Tell me, are you all from the USA as your friend in the back seat has an English accent? (I can't find his name anywhere). Glad you enjoyed Scotland & now look forward to watching your trip to Austria. I've been there many times & could I suggest a flight over the Salzkammergut (the Austrian Lake District). It is absolutely stunning. East of Salzburg, Wolfgangsee with the Lion shaped mountain & then south to Hallstadt, a town literally perched at the edge of a lake at the foot of a mountain! Keep them coming guys as I just love it all! Will you be covering your return?

    Matt, I generally love your videos but please please please take the time to review the local ATC when you next fly in Europe as it varies vastly depending on which country you are in and helps to avoid a frosty reception. Regarding the high landing fees at Shoreham, not all UK GA airfields cost as much - some just ask for a donation or cost £5, others mirror Shoreham. Hopefully you will fly around the UK again as most airfields are pretty friendly. The Skyway Code produced by the CAA in the UK will give you a quick overview of R/T in the UK without having to read through the 400 or so pages of CAP413!

Crossing the pond in a single engine piston is not something I would ever consider, either. They decided to sink a bit, end of story. That's flying here at this time of the year. With no mountains below them, not a real concern in that aircraft.

      The plane has de-icing boots on the wings and tailfeathers, so I think they were not too worried about minor icing. Not sure about the prop, but usually they have heat strips on it if the rest of the plane has de-icing or TKS.

      not really. they have de ice boots. maybe not the best decision to fly in it but it would take a substantial amount of ice to make it crash

    You'd be insane to fly in cloud without an aircraft approved for icing. Forecasts mean shit. If you're in cloud below zero, expect ice.

  • @87BWS
    @87BWS 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Although the Bonanza probably is better at most things, the 210 is better at:
    1. Loading/unloading - 2 doors vs 1 door. Pilot and passengers step up into cabin (in the 210) vs down into cabin through wing walk (in the Bonanza). Much easier for loading and unloading.
    2. Visibility - High wing vs low wing, although this is personal preference. High wing is much better for sight seeing.
    3. Airplane camping. You can set up your tent under the wing, if you're into that sort of thing.

    I think Matt is really young. I would have been 100% more harsh at that age. Do we really want people to censor their comments to the extent that they don't say anything? He doesn't like the Europe setup. Why is that crushing to so many?
    I like that this actually touches on some of the technical aspects of this trip. I watch Louis and I have no idea what is going on other than he is excited and clueless.

    • @MrRem7600

    • @s4aviator804
      @s4aviator804 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Checking the freezing levels along your route before you fly is great, but the current outside air temperature will never lie to you. It was unexpected because at that OAT, airframe icing is extremely unlikely. I don't think this looks like amateur hour at all. What looks like amateur hour are two random guys on the internet dropping comments about an experienced pilot who has flown around the world in a NON known ice certified airplane. I've been flying professionally for quite a while, and from time to time, you get some ice when you didn't think you would.

    • @s4aviator804
      @s4aviator804 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't agree at all. Asking what the minimum altitude was, I personally think that was a great decision. In the US we call it the minimum vectoring altitude. If I started rapidly picking up ice in a piston single, where my only option to escape it was to go down and not up, I'd really like to know what the lowest altitude I can stay on my clearance is. Did you realize that they were navigating off airway? It's not as simple as just checking an MEA.

    Holy Smokes guys! I hate to be negative, but in shot after shot I was screaming, "Who is flying the damn plane". Significant periods of time passing with not a glance of the panel. Flying in an unfamiliar area, at night, not only in weather but icing conditions, and a lot of distraction in the cockpit. Again, it isn't my intention to bash. But, if an emergency occurs, seconds can count and not having your head in the game can be disastrous. Thanks for the video and fly safe.

      It's an edit of a long video. What do you think we do when we are at cruise level on autopilot? The normal thing - fuel, instruments, atc, all blend into "no surprises, smooth sailing". That simple.

    The middle of the US is a haven compared to the rest of the world, especially north western Europe, because the middle of the USA is relatively dead in terms of traffic.

    Hi, as much as I liked Louis's channel during his world tour, I don't really feel a need to watch one more of Mr Guthmiller's videos. I'm a professionnal pilot flying through Europe for the last 25 years and never ever heard a so called professionnal pilot complaining so much about flying around Europe. At my early years of flying I used to go to different airports almost every day and I just delt with it. This is what flying is about, or you just want to make money out of it, and that is just business. No problem, go and find a corporate job.
    I just do not appreciate Mr Guthmiller's attitude towards Europe and as I see not much of the viewers do either.
    Anyways, young man, fly and fly safe and try to stay humble.
    Greetings

      I didn't hear him complain about Europe has whole once, he complained about the fact that the UK doesn't follow the rest of Europe and the world in it's application of air traffic control processes.
      The dude has flow around the world, pretty sure he is qualified to have a voice on the different air traffic controlling processes and which ones he sees as working better or not.

      "I didn't hear him complain about Europe has whole once, he complained about the fact that the UK doesn't follow the rest of Europe"
      Actually, the UK and Europe have a common set of rules. It is wrong that "anywhere other than the UK they do everything exactly the same". For a start most of the commonwealth countries (53) have a set of regs that are still very similar to the UK.

      That's the problem he wrongly assumed the UK works differently from Europe when it does not, London control just has tighter airspace because it is the heaviest congested airspace in Europe. And he was so blatantly wrong about the landing fee's thing.
