This video is about Daniel Bacheler's "To Plead My Faith," and dealing with an embellished lute part, while maintaining the affect of the song.

This does make a good followup to the previous video, where I found myself wanting a musical example. I like the comparison you draw between this rich and florid accompaniment and the more spare lute parts for Campion's songs. I think this is the first piece by Bacheler I've ever heard, apart from "Monsieur's Almaine"--a spectacular piece that reveals what kind of virtuoso Daniel Bacheler must have been. This is a song for professional performers--we can suppose Master Daniel had his own Mistress Kayleen to sing her part, as you have good Master Laudon to play his. Campion, however, was publishing his songs for a public of amateurs, who though sophisticated and skilled, couldn't count on having a lutenist on hand who was up to a part like this one.

I definitely think that Bacheler would have really struggled to play a “simple” part! I think it was just in his bones to be virtuosic : ) I am would be very curious to see what kind of personality he had!

I wish the subtitles showed what you sang....so lovely....the 1st tiny piece of singing seemed to match the captions......is the sung language regular English with an accent?.....

Hello! It is sung using English-English original pronunciation (16th/early 17th century). We have done a couple videos on the topic. To follow along, we have posted a score in the description with all the words : ) Thank you for asking!

I didn't mind the double ornamentation! Perhaps reserved for later verses? Great tune!
