John Williams MUST live FOREVER!! To make something so trivial as an opening theme and make it into an spectacular thing just proves that John Williams is GOD!
I think that you hire JW when you believe that no opening theme is trivial. One of my all-time favorites is the NBC News theme that is also known as The Mission. There is a nobility to that John Williams theme that makes you want to tune in to NBC just to hear it. And then, of course, there are the Olympic themes he’s written which are unbeatable for that grand spectacle. Really great writing!
Anything and everything he writes is pure genius. His compositions have his very particular imprints, chords which are very recognizable. I am a huge fan of Mr. Williams and I love his music.
His ears are absolutely incredible. He is giving intricate technique notes to individual instrumentalists to slightly change the quality of the sound. Just...wow.
I'm a huge admirer of Williams, but his genius and fame are, for the most part, confined to one genre: brilliant film scores. It's unfair to compare him to a composer who wrote symphonies, string quartets, piano concertos, chamber works, and piano sonatas which rank him among the greatest composers who have ever lived. John Williams is no Beethoven - the same way Beethoven is no John Williams.
No better composition for Great Performances could have been composed. Expresses excitement and truly captures the allure and beauty of the content of this programme.
John Williams can do absolutely NO wrong, in my book! He could take something as trivial as "Happy Birthday ", and turn it into a royal masterpiece! I LOVE YOU, MR. WILLIAMS!
William Burke Check out his “For New York,” a piece he did for Leonard Bernstein’s birthday, in which he does exactly that - at least, as much of Happy Birthday as he can use without breaking copyright law. Very cheeky, and a fantastic tribute to Bernstein.
Every John's theme is announcing that something great is begining...I think he always include every instrument in his score...Great man, great maestro..Genius..I agree..He must live forever..
In America, he also composed the theme to NBC Nightly News, NBC Sunday Night Football Theme, Meet the Press,in addition to other and his well known film scores.
It's hard to believe this tune is composed by the legendary John Williams, famous for composing Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Steven Spielberg films music. Is there a certain kind of ballet dance to this masterpiece?
It is not called a SONG!!! it is a piece of music. A track. NOT A SONG!! sick of music being described as songs: streaming sites are to blame for this nonsense
Need this on a CD!
Damn, I love how enthusiastic John Williams is for making themes like this. We need more people like him.
John Williams MUST live FOREVER!! To make something so trivial as an opening theme and make it into an spectacular thing just proves that John Williams is GOD!
Actually God is God, but John is a good composer.
I respect YOUR beliefs. Mine are just that, mine. The World is huge and varied, that's whats makes it interesting.

@@brucekuehn4031 Totally agree. As marches go JW is just the absolute master with no one daring to imitate him... which would be heresy.

Its amazing how softly he speaks.
My fave movie score composers of all time - John Williams, Maurice Jarre, John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith and Patrick Doyle.
Happy birthday, John Williams! You are my hero!
John Williams used the term "legato-ify"
Amazing!! Hahaha
Guido Anselmi First I ever heard of it, but if John Williams uses it, I certainly will from now on!
I love how his themes are always extravagantly heroic, the building up and innate richness of the orchestra is mind boggling.
3:09 just always makes me smile. Love John Williams so much. Always a pleasure to see him working
Mike K Do I detect a flicker of self-consciousness when he says “Not bad. Not bad.”?
His ears are absolutely incredible. He is giving intricate technique notes to individual instrumentalists to slightly change the quality of the sound. Just...wow.
John Williams is our modern day Beethoven. I love his work, and work of Thomas Newman and Alexandre Desplat.

@@TheStockwell Williams has also wrote Symphonies, concertos, other orchestral pieces.
@@TheStockwelllmao what? His genius extends to his concert works also.
The Jedi master of music 🎵Mr Williams 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I love watching masters at work.
I adore him!
The timpanist is actually John Williams's younger brother Don Williams.
Typical John Williams sound. So great to see a legendary composer of our time at work👏
The timpanist is John's younger brother Don.
Oh cool--thank you for pointing that out!
John Williams is the genius of our time.

Also “Happy Birthday Variations” for Seiji Ozawa. He did exactly what you’re saying here lol
Thanks for uploading, PBS!

10 ans déjà. Ten years !!!
MY WORD!!!
how can one download/purchase a copy of the great performances theme song?
It's hard to believe this tune is composed by the legendary John Williams, famous for composing Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Steven Spielberg films music. Is there a certain kind of ballet dance to this masterpiece?
Excelente.
Did John base on one of some of the best performances in history upon composing this theme like what he used doing in composing scores for the movies?
“legato-ify the trumpets”
John Williams sounds like me in school 0:34
Picard at 2:07
Yes, haha!
I didn't know he composed the theme for the show! I thought he only did Evening at Pops.
Based Williams
+The Bear from The Revenant What is "based"?
Joseph Carl Breil internet term for maestro
4:15 is that james morrison?
It certainly looks like him! I think it might be!
4:23 Uncle Vernon? Is that you?
Nope, just John Williams’s younger brother Don Williams.
For some reason it sounds like Alan Menken. I like how it sounds like that in beginning.
You mean for some reason Alan Menken sounds like John Williams. Not the other way round.
Too bad the awkward visuals to the GP opening kind of negate the quality

Damn, Shawn Murphy's missing an arm.
For Years....Has Not Stopped Shawn..Working with ...Jerry Also..!
Everything he does has an ET root theme to it. hahah. That's OK!
He doesn't know what he wants, and the orchestra must be patient with him.
