Years of practice and muscle memory in live performances prepared all four Beatles for perfection in the studio. As Mike mentions they'd been covering the Chuck Berry song for a while with same note albeit in a different key. So he had that pattern down long before he tried to sing with it.
Wow! that was great. So nice to have some focus on Paul's bass work. That's a rich field to explore on it's own. Another favourite of mine is his marvellous bass line for "Nowhere Man". That's so melodic it almost seems like a song within a song. Thanks so much!
i was just listening to a live version of Nowhere Man today and remembering how they always said they were always nervous doing that live cause of the harmonies. not only were they nailing the vocals (of course), but Paul was playing the bass line you mentioned while singing the part and probably unable to hear himself doing either.... folks just don't understand how good as a band and individually those guys really were...
It's a shame that most people (including me) listening to early Beatles songs back in the day did so with crappy radios and cheapo turntables, thereby missing out on much of Paul's bass work. Thanks to Mike here for bringing it into full glory.
Awesome that you’re taking a lot at Paul’s bass playing on this song, it’s definitely one of his most iconic and fun lines to play and it still amazes me that he was able to sing while playing that fast. It wasn't until I saw the bass part for I Want To Hold Your Hand that I saw where Paul double-noted a bit and that opened my eyes to a lot. The tone you have is really warm. Good.

My approach to learning bass theory was to copy the record note for note. There's a couple of nuances you showed that I'd missed.👍 One of my favorite songs to play. What a finger burning workout it was. Not being used to the larger neck size. Ended up using open A in the bridge to give my hand a rest. Soon after I picked up a more playable rig, which still graces my studio.
Who knew that Paul varied the bass line so much in ISHST! I can't thank you enough for laying all that out so completely. What great ears you have, Mike. I don't play this song often enough to memorize the timing of all these variations, but I will definitely change up the bass line to approximate what Paul is doing. It's subtle but really makes the song jump. Even on the simplest songs, Paul created great interesting bass lines..

Awesome when you mention the chords being played and how they relate to the bass notes. I think very essential in understanding the logic and helps to even provide variations at times as long as makes sense. Most tabs never mention the chords, which helps especially when bass line all over fingerboard. ;)
Yeah...the lead break in a live setting is a great place for a Train Wreck, if one of the guitarists aren’t paying attention! Good stuff Mike. BTW... I used round wounds on my Hofner. Great punch from that bass.
Wow, thanks for the bass lesson (although after a few years my fingers can play the riffs up to speed but can't even think of singing along). While I was studying this song years ago I noticed that on the Sullivan show, on the usual first trip to A on the E string 5th fret, he simply (and easier for me) moves the riff for A on the next pair of strings on the same frets, but he never repeats that again (and never in the recording).

There is a remarkable drumming break in this song, combining time signatures 3/4 and 16/16. It's a rare drawing, since the Beatles I haven't heard it from any other artist. But it sounds great, creating an atmosphere of light-hearted fun and energy

I’ve tried singing and playing bass very hard takes lots of practice not very good at it, but one thing I think may help is to not focus on what your playing sounds like and instead trust that the notes you play will sound correct, so that frees up mental capacity for singing. Even though the notes are simple and few the rhythm is driving and you can see Paul moving with his body keeping that rhythm like a good bassist/singer probably has to/ enjoys too
Its a workout for sure and imagine he came up with this very busy baseline at his tender age like it was nothing. It totally drives the song. Hamburg paid off.

Used to play Chuck's "I'm Talking About You" around 80 in a band I was with and never heard The Beatles version back then, It was always a fun bass part to play & at times during the tune I may play a slight variation without thinkin' bout it, not sure if that's what Paul could have done. Also have used the bass riff or something very similar in other tunes, most recently in the bridge of "Mohair Sam" (Charlie Rich). Always played with fingers, no pick it's a quick tempo I believe "I Saw Her Standing There" is about 10BPM faster than Talkin' bout you ...
N McG - I find that guitars made in China are hit and miss - some good, some not. In order to get the strings low enuff/comfortable on my Hofner HCT-5001/1-SB - there's plenty of fret buzz (as you can hear thru my vocal microphone during the lesson) - and yes I know how to properly adjust a neck. BUT - as you can hear on the performance section at the end of the lesson - the fret buzz can NOT be heard when you record.
Wow! Paul played that and sang it live on the recording? There was no overdubbing on the bass in that session. If I play bass and sing you get only a basic bass part. LOL
How in the world can you sing when your fingers are all over the place? That's a talent in itself!!!
