True story: When I was about 13 before THUG came out, I had e-mailed Neversoft and told them how much of a fan I was of the series and how I thought it would be cool if they could put KISS on the upcoming game's soundtrack(I had recently became a KISS fan and I was obsessed. Still am actually) Anyways, someone responded and said they liked my idea and they'd pass it around. Can you imagine my shock when I finally got to play the game?? Not only was KISS on the soundtrack but they had a level and Gene as a skater...blew my fucking mind!

I remember buying Tony Hawk underground back in the day. Soundtrack was crazy they had “Iron Galaxy” by Cannibal Ox 🔥. Can’t wait for the new Tony Hawk game later this year.

On the other hand, I've been playing Cosmic Star Heroine on the Nintendo Switch since I got it on sale a few months back. I'm also going to start my playthrough of Detroit Become Human since it's a fairly short game.
When I was about 13 I went to Woodward skate camp in PA. I dropped in on the largest halfpipe they had and wiped out in front of Bob Burnquist and Tom Boyle. My board was like half a mile away. They didn't even laugh once. I spent the rest of the week on the smaller ramps lol. I still have all their autographs from the board that I eventually retrieved. I love old skater Johnny. Brings back all these great old memories!!!
One thing that I love about Johnny's videos is his positivity. If we're honest with ourselves, there's some good and some bad in everything (obviously some things have more good than bad and vice versa) - and it seems like the vast majority of us are always consumed by the bad, and ignore the good. So everything feels negative, and everyone has negative things to say. Johnny focuses on the good - and everything he says feels positive and uplifting (even while acknowledging that the bad exists in the game that he's talking about). He'll be a good father for sure.
4:39 - That logo is still awesome. I lived my youth in late 80's and early 90's and remember how I admired and adored cool skateboard deck graphics back then. I kind of want to find a t-shirt with the Powell Peralta Bones logo.
I totally agree about the Snk collection. It is a masterclass on how to do a classic compilation right.
Between Blaster Master and Crystals they are absolutely my favorite games from the nes. Played them when I was a kid. It was also good to see someone else playing Strider 2 lately. Great episode man

I recently finished FFVII (ps1 download!) and now am playing (and intend to finish) Xenogears. Universe building, crazy world settings, Evangelion level emotional characters and plots, I love it!
I really liked Tobal No. 1 as well. I bought it second hand, disc only, from Blockbuster back in the day and was really surprised by how much fun it was. Haven't played it in years but this video has made me want to revisit it.

I know I'm late to the party, but about a month ago, I finally got a Switch Lite. Thanks for the info on Crystalis Johnny. I have the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection on my PS4, and can play it on there, but it's also on the Switch via the NES library. Being able to play it on the go really appeals to me!

Dude Tony Hawk Underground was one of my favorite games! My brother and I spent weekends play THUG1 and THUG2. Plus, those games were some of the soundtracks of my life.

Just started fire emblem three houses, after playing awakening on the 3ds. Awakening was incredible. Three houses seems a bit more "social"(?), but I hear it picks up. I'm only about 4 hours in. 👍
3 houses is my game of the year for 2019 fantastic story
Been playing fire emblem fates, after that I'll go to three houses, I did enjoy awakening a lot, fates seemed to improve upon the gameplay of awakening even if the story is a bit goofy at times
my roommate and I spent a month arguing about the different endings and the overall story in 3 Houses

Oh boy you have a long way to go! Such an excellent game. The social aspect of the game definitely grew on me over time and helped me relate and care for the students. I’ve finished the Golden Deer play through and plan on playing the Blue Lions play through later this year. Which house did you chose?
I bought Crystalis with Lemonade Stand money as a kid. Great game! So happy to see you discuss it!
I remember being pretty young at my cousins house playing THUG 1, GTA Vice City, and Halo 1 on their Xbox. My Dad was all for it, but my Mom was pissed. Gotta love THUG, I will never forget Muska hooking me up with his board, or Eric stealing my footage.

Strider 2 is available on PS3 PSN. It includes Strider 1: you have to select the disc change option as it was two discs!
Crystalis is on the Switch’s NES Online service.
Johnny, I really liked that you talked about Tony Hawk's underground. One of favorite games! I also enjoyed your sick skate footy! That Powell Peralta board is awesome. I’ve just finished Resident Evil 4 for the first time and absolutely loved the gameplay. It was really fun experiencing such an influential game and seeing how much influence it’s had on the industry. After RE4 I finally finished Luigi’s Mansion 3 and enjoyed it quite a bit. Just started Owlboy and plan on playing GRIS afterwards. Hoping that by the time I’m done with this Ghost of Tsushima will be out.

Tobal No. 1 was one of my favorite games as a kid. The dungeon mode was a lot of fun.
Nice Juna shirt! I'm playing through the japanese version of Trails of Cold Steel 4 right now. I couldn't wait until October to play the English version, so I imported it a couple months ago and am playing it with an English translation. Probably my favorite JRPG series.

I've been playing:
1-Ys Origins (it's the first one I played from the series) and I absolutely love it.
2-Tales of Symphonia. 24 hours in and the story so far is excellent. I see why it's the favourite Tales to some of the fans of the series. Ever since I finished Tales of Berseria I had the urge to play more JRPG games. So much so I bought three other JRPG games the last 30 days still sealed adding to my backlog.
I couldn’t really get into YS Origin but maybe I’ll try again at some point.. I’m a huge fan of YS VII & VIII tho.. I’m playing Symphonia as we speak and 40+ hrs in.. I’m not too thrilled that it’s puzzle oriented and enemies respawn every screen.. May as well have random battles if you’re going to do that you know.. Other than that it seems like a near perfect classical ARPG
There was a time where I played nothing but THUG on my GameCube back then. Got pretty good at it and loved the music too.

Man, ps1 games with 3d backgrounds and 2d sprites was a really underutilized design choice... Strider 2 still looks awesome!

I love Crystalis! One of the favorites when it comes to NES. That field music can get stuck in your head. I was never into skateboarding, I couldn't stay on a board lol...was very much a RAD movie kind of kid..but I rented Tony Hawk Underground because I used to play the crap out of Skate or Die on NES and was hoping to recreate that fun. Strider was the first action game I ever finished on NES, back in 89..loved that as a kid

Hey Johnny, after seeing the arrow on the nose of your board I had to comment. I wanted to suggest swapping one of the screws on your front truck out with a colored one so you always know where the front is from the top of your board. Cheers man!

I’ve been on a Genesis/Mega Drive kick for the most part. Been focused on trying to beat Eliminate Down and Xeno Crisis. Also dabbling in Contra Hard Corps. And when I need a break from those I just pop in one of the Sonic games and chill out
Nice, I still need to play Eliminate Down more and beat Xeno. The Japanese version of Contra with the hit points or the (ugh) US Version?
Johnny ain’t kidding about getting older. At 16-17 there were multiple times I wiped out on my Go-Ped at 25mph, rolled, sprung up, and got back on in almost 1 fluid motion.
Now at 37 I’d likely need an ambulance.
Just 100%'d Persona 5 Royal yesterday (160hrs...good lord), and will finish the new Spongebob on Switch while I wait for the new Paper Mario. Your video inspired me to get back to my retro game backlog soon!
The THUG series were awesome. Although my personal favourite was American Wasteland.
So hype for the 1+2 remake this year but kinda wish they did THUG instead.

I’m around same age and we all grew up exactly as Johnny describes . We used to skate everyday and watch the bones brigade a movie with a young tony hawk , Steve caballero , lance mountain all the Powell skaters . Good times
I had been playing and finished Yakuza 0. What an amazing game! Such an epic story with memorable characters, and lots of minigames. You can even play Outrun and Space Harrier! A real gem.
I've been playing Ps2 and 3 lately. Disgaea Hour of Darkness, Gungrave Overdose, Kinetica, Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction, Resistance 3 etc. But last week I was having a blast with my new s video cables for Ps1, playing (the underrated) Disruptor and Silent Bomber a bunch.
THUG was my teen years, it was such amazing game
Ps1 brings back memories.. metal gear solid.. final fantasy 7..suikoden 2... Resident evil 2.. wild arms... Megaman X4.. lunar silver Star story complete.. the list goes on.

I actually just got back into my PS1 and PS2 games as well. Back then I worked all the time and was going to college full-time and didn't have much time to play. Then when WoW came out, I played MMOs mostly until about 2012ish. So I missed out on the vast majority of those games.
Then I also had Crystalis back in the day, they had it for $10 at Walmart just before the SNES came out and I picked it up on a whim. That game will always have a special spot in my heart, but going back and playing it now and DAMN that game has a clunky UI. Having to switch swords and bracelets for the different monster immunities is a real pain.
Been playing a lot of FE: Three Houses, Runner 3, and Wargroove. 🤘

Johnny, you should review CrossCode. Just added on both Switch and PS stores within the last month. Def a hidden gem. The devs are constantly working on new content, even a new map is planned for release around august. They even stream on youtube while working on the game, inviting people to join in and interact. Despite the fact that it is a 16 bit game, it has level design, puzzles and smooth combat rarely seen in a combined package nowadays. I know people most talk about the puzzles, but the level design blow me away. With their use of making getting around the map a puzzle in it self. The way the implemented platforms into the level design, is amazing. Especially considering that it is a top-down 16 bit game.

Currently playing Majora’s mask on my DS, and THPS4 on the PS2, both for the first time!! 😱
For me retro gaming is where it's at now days. I mean modern games look fantastic and all but certain patterns are recognizables after a while. Just finished Rocket knight adventures for the first time, what a tight little game.

Tobal No.1 is still my favourite 3d fighter. Excellent grappling system. Was sad they didn't continue the series after the sequel.
Just ordered a PlayStation TV, gonna play through the older final fantasies, Chrono Trigger and Cross, etc. Plus I’ll be playing Xenogears and Suikoden for the first time.
