I had a 2007 Nissan Altima. I was excited about it because I loved how it looked, it was the first brand new car I got to order from the factory and customize the options. Three days after I took delivery it as recalled, when I took it in for the recall appointment the dealership told me "We don't do loaner cars, you have to rent one from us."
I told the guy at the counter "I just spent over $30K on this car that I took delivery of three days ago. You're telling me I have to pay for a rental while you fix a car that's already been recalled? If that's the case, keep the car and I'll talk with the manager to get my money back." They took care of the rental charges and took over two weeks to fix my car. Due to unfortunate family circumstances I had to get rid of the car less than a year later.
Based on that experience and the fact that the CVT was horrible, I'd never get another Nissan.

Ghosn is just a sour guy. The Honda Mitsubishi Nissan partnership is mainly for software more than EV architecture. Nissan has great software so Honda probably wants to do what they can out of it. And Mitsubishi is just Nissan’s little brother in everything. I think the partnership would be great.

I have a ‘23 ALTIMA that I absolutely love. It’s a smooth and quiet sedan plus a decent highway car. Many people say it’s a boring car but to me that means smooth and quiet. I wanted a good size sedan not a hot rod. I actually like the CV transmission. It allows the engine to run nice and slow. Longer life and less noise. Plus no turbo to worry about. I don’t like the SENTRA since it’s too small for what I want. I take a generic approach to vehicles now. When the time comes to replace my car, whatever sedan this size or larger is available I’ll buy regardless of who builds it.

You hit the nail on the head with Nissan's true misteps in the past 15 or so years. Instead of innovation, they focused on mass sales by catering to the lower socioeconomic spectrum. As any person with common sense could have seen, that backfired spectacularly. Hence, the 'altima stigma'. They need to get away from the CV transmissions, also.

I went on my Nissan rant in that last retro review reaction you did on that early 90s little coupe. Nissan was once a great company and built exciting cars (for Japanese standards) and had quality on par with Honda and Toyota. It all went downhill when the Europeans (Renault) got involved. Look at any company that was taken over by Europeans that weren't also European (Japanese Nissan and American Chrysler) and it always goes horribly wrong. The notoriously bad European quality issues slowly work their way into the purchased company and they never give enough capital and resources to the purchased company which helps contribute to their downfall. Renault and CVTs helped kill the once great Nissaan and left us with the boring and low quality products they make today.

    • @robertallan4489
      @robertallan4489 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

Another U.S. manufacturer a European purchaser managed to kill was American Motors, Corp. Agree with your comment in every. I get it, and I agree with you and others that Renault drove Nissan into the ground, and I believe what we're seeing these days is the hangover from it. It's also why Nissan has worked so hard to get their independence back.

Enjoying your new 2005 frontier? Yep Nissan recycled the 2005 and up frontier underpinnings for the 2019. So you’ve essentially got a truck with a badly outdated frame. Besides I had a 2006 and it was horrible. So badly made that I got the strawberry milkshake twice. First time I was leaving work and the MIL lights all came on. Looked in the reserve coolant bottle, trans fluid, opened the radiator cap, looked like a strawberry milkshake. They tried to rebuild my engine instead of replacing it, replacement radiator did the same thing. Only problem was this time I was on vacation. Was fortunate cause my friend with a tow truck was willing to bring my other car out to me and tow the broken truck back to the dealer. When I got home the dealer said they replaced the engine but I think they just flushed it out and replaced the rad again. Took it to the Toyota dealer right after i picked it up and traded it in on a Tacoma. Frame issues aside ( which Toyota replaced along with most if not all of the brake lines and suspension parts with no questions asked) the Tacoma did what I needed it to do. Nissan lost me as a customer after trying to cheap out on replacing an engine that was ruined by their bad trans cooler design

They just can't seem to make any smart decisions. The price of trucks in America has gotten out of control. They offer very affordable prices on the Titan, but offer no base models or work trucks. Truck buyers are wanting something that doesn't have every single add on for less than 40k MSRP .Based on how affordable the higher trim models they have Nissan should be able to maks that happen. Instead they are pulling out of the market entirely at a time thay Ram is dropping the Classic. These companies seem to be on the path of going out of business because they aren't content with selling lower margin vehicles.

I tried to buy a Nissan last year (2023). I wanted a manual transmission Versa (don’t judge me; I had my reasons!) but the three dealers within an hour of my house didn’t have one for me to test drive. After a storm of emails and phone calls during which multiple salespeople attempted to sell me an automatic Sentra for significantly more than the Versa I actually wanted, someone from Nissan USA in Tennessee reached out. I told them what I was looking for and even offered to send a link from their online configuration tool that showed exactly what I was looking for. The rep told me, “Well, just because you configured it on the website doesn’t necessarily mean that car exists outside of your imagination.” Kind of rude, but ok, I get that. Not everyone is going order the exact same spec. So I asked, “Can I go to a dealer-any dealer-and have them special order what I want?” What I heard next floored me. “No, we don’t do that. Sorry.” Click. WOW. Ok, I’ll go buy something else then. And I did.

I could go on a rant here about Nissan ! I used to live and be a big fan of Nissans( and Infinities) , we had mid 90’s I-30, which we bought used in 2000, only after a year problems with the Bose speakers ( of course), interior trim, leather seats. We bought a used Nissan ,05 Maxima in 2008, served us well for a few years, then it started having the same problems, Bose speakers went out one by one, interior just went shot, cd player went out, the at 80,000 miles the transmission started failing. We heard that all car models that used that trans were having problems, but Nissan refused to fix them . We paid 1700 to get the transmission overhauled, but it’s still never really fixed it, so we should have paid the 2300 for the new trans. ( or should we have?) We ended up trading it for a certified preowned 2014 Acura RLX, which has never given us any problems in the 150.000 miles it has on it. Everything still works, and the interior still looks basically new. But we agreed after the Maxima that we would never purchase a Nissan or Infiniti again. So ended my love affair with those brands.

@@mrgurulittle7000 : the CVT issue was a major black eye, and my own experience working at various auto parts stores has been that the problem hasn’t really been over exaggerated.
By your own admission, Kia and Hyundai have been making compelling cars. More importantly, their quality has gone up dramatically since their early attempts in the ‘90s. Now, stepping into a Kia feels like stepping into a Toyota or Honda. The fit, materials, ergonomics…all of it is on par with the best Japanese brands, and for considerably less money with a longer warranty. Like you said: compelling. But what made me give up on Nissan-at least for my latest car purchase-was the fact that they outright refused (through three different dealers and someone from what showed on caller ID as “Nissan USA”) to sell me the car I wanted, despite it allegedly being an available combination.
I gave up and got on the Kia website, configuring a Forte GT just the way I wanted. I hit the button to request a quote, not really expecting to hear anything until after the weekend. Less than 12 hours later, the closest dealer was calling me. They didn’t have my exact car, but they were looking for it. An hour went by and the second closest dealer called. They’d been tipped off by the first dealer because they had a GT, only an automatic instead of a manual. Was I interested in a test drive? I declined, but the sales lady was persistent. Turns out, she had a manual GT, same exact car I was looking for, right down to the color. If I’d come test drive the auto, she’d also let me test drive her car and then I could make a totally informed purchase. So I went down, drove both. Still wanted the manual. “No problem!” she said. “I haven’t done a special order before, so let me get one of my colleagues over here to help walk me through it. We’ll get this done and you should have your car in no more than six weeks.” Cheerful, happy, knowledgeable about not only the vehicle I was ordering but the whole rest of the process as well. It was like they wanted me to get a car I actually wanted, as opposed to whatever they just had sitting on the lot and was easy to make disappear. It’s too bad nobody I interacted with at Nissan (dealers or corporate) had that same philosophy.

As for what's selling at Nissan in 2024 the dealerships can't keep enough Versas on the lot. But, I don't think the demand for them has much to do with Nissan. Rather, it reflects the fact that all other manufacturers no longer carry cheap, small, entry level vehicles in their line ups. Gone is the Yaris, Fusion, Sonic/Spark, Rio, Accent, etc. As a result the prices for used cars has risen substantially. And, because of the 2025 model price increases new car sales are dead. The Versa is simply the ONLY affordable new car sold today at about $17K. Is there a message here?

I see them utilizing strong transmissions in their trucks. I'm glad they are not putting turbos on everything and making everything gdi. Thanks for the video, Jon!
Ever since the third generation Altimas came out I've thought that Nissan makes some of the most beautiful (sexy?) cars among the importers. But ever since they incorporated the very poor Jatco CVT's into just about every vehicle they build, it's been a love-hate relationship. One hallmark of Nissan (for me) has always been hard-to-work-on design. My daughter's first car was a 1995 Altima, mainly because my sister had a 1994 that she liked very much and I came across a good deal on one. It was a VERY good little car, but it was a nightmare to work on. I replaced the water pump once and those who've done that know what I'm talking about. It was NOT designed for easy repair, and Maxima owners can relate too.
As for the trucks, my son in law had an Armada that was a nice, very good vehicle. My wife and I traveled with them a couple times, and it was a very good ride. I have a 2004 Tacoma, and I've always preferred Toyota's styling and quality to the Frontier's. Nissan had a lot of crank and cam sensor issues in the early 2000's, and the Z24 engines suffer more than their share of timing issues, so I'm good with saying I'll stick with Toyota because of style and quality in my experience. I don't care about ANY new vehicle brands because they all seem to be electronically fragile, so I'm also going to stick with older, well-maintained vehicles. Lord knows the way people can't stand owning anything more than a year old because Buddy Joe Jack has a new whatever, the used market will take care of me for the rest of my life.
I do hope they survive, but they really NEED NEED NEED to get rid of the Jatco CVT's or else just...fix them.

Frontier is one of the best mid-sized options out there. Infiniti had some great cars and of course Inline-6 RB26DET is one of the best engines of all time. They even had the performane option in the Sentra Ser spec V, which is something i wish they would bring back, a performance option for the Sentra would cover the loss of the Maxima and Altima because the current Sentra looks fantastic and is almost a full size car at this point.

I do miss Nissan of the 90s-early ‘00s. As a young kid I wanted a 1990 300ZX and still think it’s a fresh design 35 years later. I owned a 2001 Maxima and absolutely loved it…was a perfect balance of sporty, reliable and practical.
Fast forward to 2010s to now. Many ugly (to me) designs…the Juke in particular really lost me. The horrible JATCO CVT that Nissan has really dug their heels in on keeping. Spending scarce resources on questionable technology in the VCT engines while ignoring hybrid technology despite offering hybrids in the U.S. in the past. And stale models- the current Murano for example is on its 10th model year. It’s all Totally self-inflicted Jon.
One bright spot is the newer Frontier model…simplicity for those that don’t want a turbo 4 cylinder in their pickup truck. And to me a nice design. I hope Nissan figures it out but time is not on their side.

Dear Jon, I've got a flaming take here. Watch out it's spicy!
I remember talking about how Nissan was having trouble when I still didn't have my license (a long time ago). Nissan vehicles are mostly trash. The only good non-racecar Nissan left in USA is the Nissan Frontier, which is arguably the best small truck on the market. That's why I said mostly. The rest of the lineup is bad. The Versa used to have the title of "cheapest car". The Altima and Sentra and a bunch of other ones have that awful Nissan CVT that the Car Wizard was complaining about. And they get uglier with time. Nissan just has cheap, ugly cars.
And Nissans are a mechanic's nightmare. Whether it's an overstressed, overcomplicated Nissan v8 from some Infiniti blowing up before 150k, or simply doing an oxygen sensor job on an old Altima, mechanics don't like wrenching these things. Any sane mechanic would rather wrench something other than a Nissan. They're overcomplicated and poorly designed overall. People think "Japanese is better so Nissan must be better", but that's not how it works. That's Honda and Toyota. Nissan is about the same level as GM, which isn't good.
Sometimes, Nissan does bring a really good vehicle into the USA. The best Nissans are the basic ones: the little trucks, the coupe, even the Xterra. They basically slashed that whole lineup. The only good things left standing are a Z coupe starting at $43k and a Frontier for the cost of a Tacoma.
Once again, the only good Nissan still worth buying (aside from the supercars) is a Frontier. It's a better Tacoma. Everything else points to Nissan leaving the US market soon, assuming the Nissan EV project doesn't go well. Nissan is like Mitsubishi. They do better in poorer countries.

I will have to say I have a bit of experience as to why Nissan is in so much trouble. Longtime Toyota MDT tech here(retired in 22) in the late 2000's I followed a service manager to a Honda / Nissan dual. Dumbest move I ever made. Manager quit and abandoned a tech friend and myself. Loved working on Hondas but despised Nissan. Went back to Toyota after 2 years. So I have first hand knowledge of Ghosn, and Corporate
      1) Very cheap engineering and build quality. Compared to Toyota/Honda- being intimate with the vehicles, it was very easy to see where Nissan cut corners.
      2) Staying with the CVT, even after they knew how horrible they were- an abomination.
      3) Warranty reimbursement times, were impossible to attain. For instance. Nissan paid 4.3 hrs to diag and replace the CVT on a Murano. Just the punch time for the diagnosis of the trans ( pressure tests, software updates and documentation took close to 2 hrs. Replacing the unit took 5 hrs! Then you had to download and install more software after it was completed. Had a recall for fuel pumps. All trucks paid .9, even Armadas. They had an electric middle seat you had to remove and reinstall, including reprogramming the seat. That took an additional 2.5hrs. Factory rep stated...hey you will make up the time on pickups. NOT! I just got such a bad taste and then hated working on all of them!
      4) Yes, they had a "Warranty" but not like Toyota/Honda. A light bulb fails in a month- you are paying for it. Nissan will not. I have seen service in the red, just in the helping of a customer satisfaction, having to charge things to the service department. Kinda tough to keep a service manager if he has to pay for that stuff out of his pocket!
      5) Again, the product is just garbage. They say "hey new products are coming, two years, but please keep buying the junk on the lot today"
Nissan ( I won't tell the truth. My mom taught me not to say anything if you don't have something nice to say) is "inexpensive" and I will end this personal rant and experienced opinion here.

When you lease a car, the leasing company pays the tax and sends you a bill for reimbursement. Instead of doing that, Nissan is so hard up for cash, they have been sending out estimated tax bills that are inflated by hundreds of dollars to customers. The bills say that if the estimate is wrong in the customer’s favor, the customer won’t be charged the difference. But if it’s in Nissans favor, the customer won’t get a refund! But the VQ engines sound like poopie, as most V6 engines do but the VQ takes the cake, also why my l67 monte has a stock catback with headers and catless downpipe, I'll give up the 5 hp to sound stock-ish😂

They develop and promote Ariya while continuing to install that stupid CVT that ruined their reputation. It's in everything except the trucks. When Nissan stood alone their engines and transmissions were bullet proof. My experience. Just bought a 2017 Frontier SV 4X4 because it's the only truck I trust. The CVT in the cars and every SUV except Armada, I do not trust. That transmission why people shy away from Nissan and now Infinity.

I honestly am about to go buy a brand new MANUAL versa just because it's a CHEAP car and MANUAL.

The Nissan I referenced in the video that I owned for 10 years was a manual Versa. At 10 years and 100k miles it was having some problems, but mostly electric (locks specifically)

Nissan (or at least their reputation) has just fallen into the toilet since like 2005-2010. The CVT that they put in all their sedans and small crossover has been an albatross around their necks. In the 90s they were a legit #3 Japanese auto maker.

Nissan's vc technology is overly complex and a solution, searching for a problem...dumb idea 💡 🤔

Breaking News: Infiniti just announced that the Q50 sedan will be discontinued. Infiniti will now be a luxury CUV/SUV company now.

Yeah, I read that as well. Shame, I've always loved the look of the Q50 but it had some serious flaws and Infiniti's attitude was "good enough" - for 11 years. :)
