      The movie dark Phoenix doesn't make me understand the hype about the story, Jean grey, and Scott Summers. I was sold in the beginning and train scene though that wasn't enough. I oddly wanted more Jean Grey from this film than anything else. Not Magneto or the aliens.

      The film felt really dry. There was no excitement or genuine emotion. Also, Charles, despite what everyone else was saying, made sense and his actions were reasonable.

      It still could've been the perfect end to the new timeline. The old timeline ended with the Sentinels killing literally everyone, the culmination of Magneto's vision of a war between mutants and humans. The mutants lose. Logan could be the culmination of Xavier's vision. The mutants still ended up being largely destroyed but there's still hope for them...in Canada.

      This criticism is broadly applicable to almost every major new release. Movies now feature star-studded casts playing characters that could have been done by an unknown, and have virtually no substance. The cast isn't there to deliver the performance well, it's there to put asses in the seats.

    I think when people say they should be older i think it has more to do with the passage of time:
    First Class - 60's
    Days of Future Past - 70s
    Apocalypse - 80s
    Dark Phoenix - 90's (from what I hear)
    Seriously 30 years have passed but no one has really aged

    • @loudboy317
      @loudboy317 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First Class already pointed out that Mystique's shapeshifting abilities make her age slower than any normal person.
      Beast inherited her de-aging ability as a result of using her DNA to create a cure for himself (only, it turned him into a blue-furry monster instead).
      The serum Charles used to walk again had side effects like rapid aging and premature hair loss. It's why he already looks like Patrick Stewart in the beginning of X3: The Last Stand and X-men Origins: Wolverine but when he stopped using the serum in Days of Future Past, he doesn't suffer its side effects anymore so he remains looking like James McAvoy in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
      Finally, in the comic books, Magneto used the earth's magnetic fields to regenerate his body which is probably why he hasn't aged from First Class to Dark Phoenix.

    • @BrontoSmilodon1
      @BrontoSmilodon1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      the only one that makes sense out all of that is mystique and maybe beast although the ending to days of future past shoots that theory in the foot.
      Honestly Fox should have let the cast age naturally and have these movies stay in the 70's

    • @loudboy317
      @loudboy317 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @
      Age-proof? Both Professor X and Magneto were already old men when they meet Jean Grey (who was a little girl) at the beginning of X3. Meanwhile, Wolverine lost his age-proof abilities in Logan and both Angel and Jubilee (in Apocalypse) are exactly the same age as they were in the original trilogy.

      @fake channel My comment is ment to be sarcastic, because while these are stupid problems, they are perceived issues for better or worse.
      The sequel thing is actually important when it comes to this movie. All the marketing was talking about how it's a new take, it's a different take, and sets up these characters. It makes it seem like it is the first in a new series. This is a turn off for a lot of people. Personally, I have limited time and funds, so why spend money on a dead/dying movie franchise?
      It also does not help that there is no place to stream these movies or catch up on them. I would take my movie buddy (my wife) but because it is the last in a long line of movies she would rather not go.
      (Also, the X-Men and FF have been shafted in the current Marvel comics continuity, so it just felt like why bother seeing movies that have no care put into them by their parent company)

    For me, a LOT of it is casting. Other than the McEvoy and Fassbender , NO ONE ELSE in this cast was never even REMOTELY CONVINCING in their roles. Casting is SO important, especially for this genre. Even though you’ve had many different interpretations of these characters over the years in the comics, it takes a lot more than simply shaving your head into a Mohawk to play Storm, or wearing a (really bad) wig and blue body paint to play nightcrawler. Jennifer Lawrence decided after playing Mystique in exactly ONE MOVIE that she was far too big a movie star to even BE a part of this franchise, and she’s made NO attempt to hide it. She’s been low key dissing the franchise and making almost no attempt to hide the fact that she hates being in the makeup chair for hours and was only in these movies because she’s under contract. Word gets around

  • @baylaust
    @baylaust 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    The core problem with both adaptations is that it isn't just the "Dark Phoenix" saga; it's "THE PHOENIX" saga.
    Jean Gray didn't get this cosmic power and then immediately become a super villain. It originally appeared to have no negative consequences: she survived what should have been something that killed her, got a TREMENDOUS power boost from it, and has enough self-awareness to keep herself in check so her new power doesn't run rampant.
    That's why when she DOES succumb to the Dark Phoenix, it hits that much harder. There was time to develop all the GOOD she was capable of with the Phoenix Force under her control. She original gives in to the Phoenix's full power because she was desperate to save Cyclops. She only had good intentions, but that choice ended up killing billions when Dark Phoenix took over her mind. It was seeing such a good character given great power to do great things, and then seeing her fall so hard, so fast, that made the Phoenix Saga what it is today.
    It's NOT something you can do without taking time to build up to that fall, without taking time to develop an attachment to Jean and the relationships she has, and that's why Dark Phoenix was a flawed premise for a movie from the start. Sophie Turner is a good actress, and she can be a great Jean Grey, but we've only had two movies with her version of Jean. You can't pull the trigger on Dark Phoenix with only ONE movie under your belt.

    Your problems with Jean in this story, I feel, would actually work out better if they went with the 'revised' version of the Phoenix saga. Where the Phoenix Force absorbed her memories, emotions, and thought patterns unintentionally as she was dying.
    But then, I don't see Fox leaving the questions that were asked in the 'revised' version open. What makes a person who they are? If they have a radical shift in how they think and act, are they the same person? Is it the physical body that we're attached to?
    I'll be honest, I like that version more than the original. The original was basically 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely', while the 'revised' version asked of the reader 'What makes us, us?'. Despite the horrible acts and there being an argument that this wasn't Jean, she remembered everything involving Scott, and was willing to sacrifice herself for the good of others.

    Unlike the dread people had about it, the movie had its highlights. The problem however, imo, is twofold: There were no surprises, the "surprise" of Xavier's mind trick was already strongly alluded to and didn't feel strong enough to send Jean Grey into madness (thus forcing Sophie Turner to overact for the part in order to sell the "madness").
    Bad build up. The build up to the scene with Jean's father seemed extremely lackluster. I think the father having a more frightened response to his daughter's arrival would have been more appropriate. All we saw was a bad father, we didn't see the monster that the father thought he saw.
    The aliens felt more like a plot device than a character, too. I also agree that Jean Grey should have made the choice at the beginning, not Xavier.

    SPOILERS:
    Some things that frustrated me were how the trailer had one thing and the movie had another. I know it was not to "spoil" the surprise, but it created cheap suspense. For example, when Jean's in the rain in the trailer she asks "Why did you make me do that?" when in the movie she asks "Why did I do that?" and then the whole face grabbing thing with some random dude...Why not HAVE her go for Scott's face and at the end she changes her mind and gives into her humanity?
    This movie had potential but it felt like a Fantastic 4 movie (circa 2000s). I agree, there was no grandness. Also, I LOVE Jean but we barely got to know her. There's no payoff to make her Phoenix this early. We don't care about her. She was in Apocalypse for like....15 minutes at the most. We needed at least another movie before they did this.
    All that said, it was okay. I don't think it deserves ALL the hate but it's not as bad as X-Men Apocalypse.

I am not entirely familiar with the phoenix saga so I wouldn't know, but I do have to wonder if the Phoenix saga is all that great when there has never been a successful adaption of the Phoenix saga in any medium as far as I can tell. I have to wonder, is it that no one gets the phoenix saga or is it maybe because the phoenix saga doesn't hold up? Why do people try to make so many changes to the phoenix saga to begin with? I kinda suspect that it might be dated in some horrible way and every Phoenix saga adaption tries to fix it and fails.

    What made me hate this film the most out of all X-Men films is it's laziness. No one wanted to be there and do it. Acting, directing but most of all writing failed. I can't remember a single thing I liked about it, just that things were happening and I couldn't care less, because no one did.

    I think Browntable said the best, Logan should've been the last film for the franchise
