Dave, it baffles me that a guy in his garage can make a nice full-featured camper that weighs 650lbs, and tenured camper companies can't make a basic camper that weighs less than 1500.
    Very well done!

I bought a Travelite for my short box, 1180Lbs, under my payload (no bathroom, portapotti in cupboard plus lowest weight model) Have a set-up to shower inside. Preferred this layout! Campers seem to cost more than trailers! Rides well!
I keep everything light and minimal and I don't fill the water tank when traveling (I pack 4 gallons, depending on where I'm going). I have Dometic air conditioner (used once) would like to change it out to a fan, never used the hot water tank (I boil water), never used the outside shower or microwave (took it out). Heater works great and the 3 way fridge. I usually camp without amenities, usually hunting or fishing. I have portable (fold up) solar and a power station. I usually cook outside, but the inside 2 burner propane is handy at times. It seems well enough insulated. Hated the netting on cupboards, added doors. Somethings are a waste if you don't use them!
This guys homebuilt in nice and half the weight!

      Ya have that right Jon!
If I was younger?? Yes! I would attempt to doing that! At 70, both my knees replaced, a Stroke; I’m afraid I’m out of commission now.. You’ve done great work my man!

@@Here_is_WaldoI absolutely believe it. The main structural component of this build is XPS foam. A 2" thick 4'x8' XPS board weighs 7.5 lbs and has an insulation rating of R-10. XPS is very strong in regards to compressive forces but weak with twist and shear. He mitigates that here by making a composite panel/sandwich with 1/4" wood panels on the outside of the foam. I would guess this build is just as strong as any commercially available build. I love this design!

@@irishcanuck9489I converted a Ford Transit cargo van into a camper van.
What I learned is that I just don’t need much to be comfortable.
A comfortable platform bed with mattress, a way to stay cool in the summer (Thinsulate insulation, MaxxAir fan, window vents, usb fans, battery operated fan, 12v fans) and a way to stay warm in the winter (quality sleeping quilts and heater). A comfortable swivel seat, lagun mount table, a fridge, lighting, and built in storage to round it out.

Omg, so sweet. I wish I could have a camper like that, I have a short bed Chevy 5ft 8 inch bed. I’m disabled, no tools etc. trying to not live in my truck. But I’m about to be homeless, where I live has been sold. Great way to start fall, I wish I could find someone who’d like to do a camper build on mine 🙏. Sticker on my truck says no slide in campers, so now looking for a truck cap. So I’d have some room out of elements , even finding a cap for my size is very difficult. I don’t need all the bells and whistles, just heat and sleeping and cooking out of the elements. I think yours are so comfy looking, great work 😊

If your situation hasn’t changed since the posting, a couple things: you have a truck; worse case scenario, you’re not homeless, just houseless. Next, you need to check out both these on TH-cam and whatever social media platforms they are on: starting with HOWA (House on wheels Alliance), and Bob Wells. You can find many resources needed to help you build out your truck to a truck camper. The more you research, the more knowledge & information you will garner, not to mention a great community. I’m in the same situation - except I had to sell my 12 acres & cannot squat on what was once home. The plan was always to head west- just too expensive out east. A solo widow, it’s been just me & a couple furbabies for a while & my mechanical skills are slim & none! I must first make a trip to get my 22-year old rig from NC to FL to inter my brother’s cremains. Afterward, it’s westward bound on a wing and a prayer. But it’s past time to meet likeminded people - to get to where all these wonderful, smart people & resources are. The winter weather has set my timeline back, but mid Jan. I must break away from this property- emotionally & physically (and new property/homeowner has no more use of any security services I provided during restoration & needs me to go). Change is always scary, but I think this is one case where one door closes and a huge, new one will open. We have to have hope; so many times there is no option but hope. Take a deep breath and plow through it. You’ll be fine, my friend.

Well done sir.

There are so many good aspects to this camper, especially the 6 ft 5 sideways sleeping orientation. But you definitely need to include a portable grey tank and maybe just a longer hose. Grey water attracts animals and bugs, not to mention that some camping areas frown upon dumping grey water (but in your case, unless they inspect the inside how will they know?) Virtually any type of plastic water container could serve as your grey tank. I also like the air conditioner! Very practical.

I love that you build them yourself and create a better product than big industry.

A build after my own heart!!! Right on. Now if you could only make it 6’3.5”. I would be Right at home at 6’3”. Glad to found your work. I literally want to stop looking for any other design. Has it all.

One of those highly functional yet simple design campers that stands out from the rest. Thanks for the video.

    Sir,
as someome who chronically looks at builds for vans and trucks, this has to be by far they best. PLEASE if you feel so inclined share some basic plans for this. If necessary, i would even be willing to pay for them; Something i never thought i would say. Your crafstmanship and utilization of space is very well implemented, and i would love to do something similar for myself. I really hope this comment reaches you and PLEASE continue doing what you are doing. This is very inspiring.

Thank you very much. This build and all my others are chronicled with various videos over the years. So just take a look at everything I have historically posted. Beyond that, I don’t offer any plans. Thanks for watching!

The camper is awesome. I just wish these guys would cover the pricing, build times, and equipment in their shop. When I watch some builds, the tools and the shop would be a $10,000 investment up front. I am impressed by guys like Foresty Forest and Tiny Cabin Life who build out their spaces with just a few power tools. Their work may not look pretty but it is fast and inexpensive.

I just wanted to let you know that I was a chef for 35 years now retired and you are one of the most most talented people who's work is very inspiring,
You honestly have more talent in your pinky than I could imagine. I've made a lot of nice dishes but nothing on this level, I'm curious, what do you do for a living?

You did a fantastic job! That looks and functions great! I wish I was that handy with construction. I can fix just anything but I have never been a “carpenter”. Lol Enjoy your hard work and be safe.

Super cool build! Wayyy better insulation than my Bigfoot. What happens though, when you're inside and someone closes the tailgate?

  • @kieronimo1

Two questions. When you're asleep at night, do you have to leave the tail down. Also, if someone shuts the tail when you're in it, how do you get out?

Good build, followed along on them good vid Like to see the van build. Interesting with the composite construction. Simple is good. I like an 8 ft bed or a tray. Flatbeds get pretty tall though but allow space for a small bike up front with spares or on the rear. Take care

Can you share more details on the exterior walls. So 1/4 inch plywood, using exterior screws, wood filler, then you coat it all with a what exactly? There is some basement water proofers and also RV roof coating that I thought about but find what you were referring to interesting. I just subscribed so I am going through your videos but anyway to be more exact with how you do the walls inside and outside would be appreciated.

Hey man, I love your camper. I can see you've thought a lot about the design, layout, construction etc. Very well thought out. And for a small footprint, it seems surprisingly uncramped on the inside. Great job.
