  • In this series I will finally be converting my 1951 Pontiac Chieftain Straight 8 from the unreliable 6 volt system to a "modern" 12 volt system. The first part covers everything you would need to do a conversion. The second part goes over how to set up and mount a universal alternator bracket. While being a little challenging to set up, this particular one was able to work well enough to use the original belt and tensioner bracket for the new alternator. There are many different ones you can purchase on the internet that are universal, or made specifically for a specific vehicle. However if you think a universal style similar to this may work on your vehicle, feel free to give it a try! This particular style for sure works on Pontiac Straight 8s.

When I converted my '51 to an alternator, I used a Mr. Gasket adjustment side bracket. I had to cut it shorter and drill a new hole to mount to the back of the water pump. Worked a treat.
