    I noticed that when my steam deck does updates on the SD cards, for large 10 plus gig updates after its all download and it's simply patching, it patches fast , then slow, fast then slow over and over. The graph it shows spikes up and goes down until it produces a line wave image.
    Seems to me, Valve ensured to throttle the write speeds on SD cards in order to manage heat creation. Yes it goes slower than it should half the time, BUT cards are not being broken like they once were. This seems like the solution for the Ally.

    I ordered the same 2tb from ebay. Should arrive in the next day or two. Still love my Ally after it murdered my 1tb SD card. Back to amazon it goes. I did a mod with an external ribbon cable m2 extention on the SD that worked out well to use a full 2280 with it. It's worked great for months now. I think people could safely use a 2242, but the benefits aren't really there with pricing vs 2230. Love your content. Keep it up.

    I did a manual fan curve and it still borked my sd card. I was blasting the fan at 100% that would kick in at about 70 C. This was after the ally borked an earlier card, which did not have a manual fan curve. Now, I did use turbo mode and had it plugged in, but this was for only one of my games. I kept it at 10w and 15w most of the time. I think placing the reader near a really hot part of the ally was a poor design decision.

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s def coincidence imo but I would advise around 80-85c to be 100%. I have a video about setting manual fan curve and so far so good and the hundreds of others as well. I’ve seen one or two have an issue because heat isn’t the only killer of sd cards but it’s primarily why that memory card reader is having issues.

      @briancohen2735 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cppctek I set both fan speeds at 100% way lower than you're suggesting, and it still messed up the card. I thought I'd reformat it using the ally, and it couldn't even do that.

    I hope they do a revision of this where you can put in a 2280 nvme. Seems like all they would need to do is alter the back plate to just have slightly shorter standoffs.
    The heat as you said "could" be an issue. It really depends on which nvme drive you go with though.

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  ปีที่แล้ว

      It won’t work because you have to slide it under the battery and chop off a part inside it and it will cause the nvme to fail
      Prematurely and overheat being under the battery and also it will
      Cover half the left system ram chips. Trust me I’ve don’t extensive research. Why do people don’t just buy a 2230 and call it a day is beyond me lol

    • @dreadlord9257
      @dreadlord9257 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cppctek Price per GB basically. 2TB 2230 is roughly the cost of 4TB 2280.
      Also, just hundreds of options 2280 vs. just a handful for 2230.
      As to "chopping of part", my understanding was you only need to chop off bits of the plastic on the back of the handheld casing, so nothing on the drive itself or ally board.
      But yeah to your point, installing the appropriate 2230 is just 100% easier.

      Yee yee. The ally has some qwerks too as most windows handhelds do. Honestly it’s kinda tough cus I love the ally performance but for console players / non pc gamers they may like the steam deck better with less things to go wrong in software. It’s tough because I’ve seen so many people who are not Pc gamers buy an ally and not really know all the ins and outs and dos and don’t of windows and they just expect it to work perfect out the box. They don’t understand the concept of game settings and graphics settings as well as what half the features do so it’s imfo over load for some new users. Steam deck is simple when on steam os but way more complex on windows though and you constantly have to keep apps and drivers updated on new devices until
      The drivers mature. There needs to be better Linux support for gaming. If that happens it would crush windows forever for gaming lol 😂

    I think its just silly that the sd card reader even is in a place where it needs to be cooled to stay functional. If it were just at the bottom, it wouldnt need any additional cooling or fan curves at all. Now, Im not saying ASUS didnt consider putting it at the bottom, Im sure they had to make some compromises due to the device being so small and compact... but dang this is a messy situation

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, I do agree for sure it is not an optimal place for it to be. One of the reasons they could not put it at the bottom is because of the length of the motherboard does not go all the way down to the bottom of the device so they would’ve had to run some type of jumper and you would’ve had a lot of latency and a lot of speed issues probably with it being that far away from the board. Essentially wanna have your storage is close to the CPU as possible for the best speeds. I did notice that on the review samples they had higher fan curves. And I think one of the things that they try to do before lunch was lower the fan curves, but they did not get enough testing in the real world in my opinion I do think that it’s an easy fix and it should do well for people as a whole, but be sure to stay tuned. I’ve got a lot more contact coming about this as well as other topics.

      The memory card is probably corrupt, but you can try formatting it again, but just make sure that you format it with EXFAT rather than NTFS. Also, I would probably suggest swapping that memory card out as most. Have a lifetime warranty. Also, be sure the source you got it from a check the reviews if it’s from Amazon because there has been quite a bit of counterfeit memory cards lately. Also make sure that your fan curve is sad because that is the exact suggestion that Asus he’s giving us now and what’s funny is I was the original one that came up with the idea after looking at the schematics for the board and looking at the part number for the memory card, reader, and seeing what the temperature limit was on it. So, in fact, you will have a much better chance.

    • @Punisher_JKU

      @cppctek I unfortunately have no other way of formatting the sd card since the ally is the only device I have that uses one. I really don't like the fact that I can hook another 65w charger into it with a tester showing that it's pulling over 60w but it won't go into the 30-watt mode. You really shouldn't put out false information. I appreciate you trying to help, but they have not said heat is the problem. They said as a precaution they will release an update to the fan curve. However, what they have stated is all of their test devices are not having the issue. Also, I know someone that's been running a 100% at 60c fan curve and has the SD card reader issues. Again, I appreciate you trying to help, but don't try and spread misinformation.

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  ปีที่แล้ว

      I also said that heat is one of the causes but not the only cause. Also if asus is telling us publicly to do it there is a reason. This is my observations. The other half of the equation is likely the format of the card. I’ve seen less issues on exfat users as well. But what I said was accurate for what asus said. I do know heat has always been an issue with sd cards. Also the technical data shows the memory card reader can only take 70-75c if our research is correct. Feel free to join the rog ally discord and hear from others

    • @veridiux
      @veridiux ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cppctek It's not a guarantee cause though. This hasn't been confirmed. Also, using ntfs or exfat shouldn't cause a hardware failure either way. Also, is the reader chip that isn't supposed to go over 70c. This spec sheet has nothing to do with the slot...
      I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying we still don't know and there's plenty of people still using SD cards with stock fan curves without an issue.

      95c on turbo mode is thermal throttle. cause if i do manual curve and set the fans to max my temps goes down to 80c. which shows that the stock turbo fan curve is not capable to dissipate the 30w to 43w of heat.

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some can yes. Some can’t. Also the particular reader socket they chose on the technical data sheet it says 75c and the mossfets beside it hit 100c. Enjoy.

    • @eternalinsignia
      @eternalinsignia ปีที่แล้ว

      well the problem is not sd card though. Albeit I don't have rog ally, but looking into its component placement, I can basically say it is badly designed. Let's put 85 degree spec hardware near 100 degree spec hardware. Sure.... (and they might cheapen out some of hardware to shave dollar).
      Why do I say hardware problem ? Because I had experience with a bad card reader which is if it is too hot, it will make the sd card borked. Sure 1 or 2 times, you can fix it by reformatting it; but if you keep doing it, SD card will fail. Oh also bad sd card reader is giving high read and high write spiky valley to peak to valley to peak so much which lead to more heat(this also might due to OS, driver, etc).

    An update cannot fix the location of the sd card slot on the motherboard.A video on TH-cam showed the monumental mistake made by the engineers and the designers.Everyday there is another problem with the Ally.I cannot believe a company would release something that is obviously not ready to be put on shelves.The Asus Rog Ally is the biggest flop in handheld gaming history.
