Now, Im not saying ASUS didnt consider putting it at the bottom, Im sure they had to make some compromises due to the device being so small and compact... but dang this is a messy situation
Well, I do agree for sure it is not an optimal place for it to be. One of the reasons they could not put it at the bottom is because of the length of the motherboard does not go all the way down to the bottom of the device so they would’ve had to run some type of jumper and you would’ve had a lot of latency and a lot of speed issues probably with it being that far away from the board. I sold the SD and got the ROG. No issues other than windows jank. I accidentally broke 2 cards due to forgetting to take it out of the deck when opening the back… shouldn’t have that issue with the ROG lol
So will this fan curve help my sd card reader work again? Or has my card reader kicked the bucket for good? Or will buying a new sd card work? Mine started messing up last night and i tried again today to see if it was still not working and it wasn't. Plug in the sd card and it detects that one is there, but it won't read anything off of it, acts like it's not even in there.
The memory card is probably corrupt, but you can try formatting it again, but just make sure that you format it with EXFAT rather than NTFS. Also, I would probably suggest swapping that memory card out as most. Have a lifetime warranty. Also, be sure the source you got it from a check the reviews if it’s from Amazon because there has been quite a bit of counterfeit memory cards lately. Also make sure that your fan curve is sad because that is the exact suggestion that Asus he’s giving us now and what’s funny is I was the original one that came up with the idea after looking at the schematics for the board and looking at the part number for the memory card, reader, and seeing what the temperature limit was on it. So, in fact, you will have a much better chance.
@cppctek I unfortunately have no other way of formatting the sd card since the ally is the only device I have that uses one. I am currently returning this one to Amazon and maybe will try a different one in the future. I'm also now following your fan curve settings to allow better performance and a safer cooling environment for the card reader. I swapped out the original ssd for a 2tb one on day one, I was using a 1tb sd card for games I cared less about.
@cppctek How do I do this? I put the sd card back in and I went to disk utility and opened the app and nothing shows up, just a blank white screen with some options at the top of the window
I just got my ally last night and have two questions. What setting do I change to prevent my pc downloads/deletes from downloading/deleting on my ally and vise versa? Also, I played “the outlast trials” first thing after updates and the color quality was pretty dull and almost warm. Were my expectations a bit too high on the screen or have I overlooked a setting?

Thanks for making the video. And I got to say I'm a little disappointed in Asus that they don't have this a little more dialed-in. I really don't like the fact that I can hook another 65w charger into it with a tester showing that it's pulling over 60w but it won't go into the 30-watt mode. It'll go to 30 W, but that's it, then it won't boost above that. If there is the thermal headroom, which mine has specially in-game, let it boost when it needs it. Not just the first 30 seconds and 2mins minutes

@@cppctek of course you're going to see some fail with the massive volume of Steamdeck being sold, but that's nothing compared to the amount of card failure the ally is dealing with.
You really shouldn't put out false information. I appreciate you trying to help, but they have not said heat is the problem. They said as a precaution they will release an update to the fan curve. However, what they have stated is all of their test devices are not having the issue. Also, I know someone that's been running a 100% at 60c fan curve and has the SD card reader issues. Again, I appreciate you trying to help, but don't try and spread misinformation.
I also said that heat is one of the causes but not the only cause. Also if asus is telling us publicly to do it there is a reason. This is my observations. The other half of the equation is likely the format of the card. I’ve seen less issues on exfat users as well. But what I said was accurate for what asus said. I do know heat has always been an issue with sd cards. Also the technical data shows the memory card reader can only take 70-75c if our research is correct. Feel free to join the rog ally discord and hear from others
@@cppctek It's not a guarantee cause though. This hasn't been confirmed. Also, using ntfs or exfat shouldn't cause a hardware failure either way. Also, is the reader chip that isn't supposed to go over 70c. This spec sheet has nothing to do with the slot... I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying we still don't know and there's plenty of people still using SD cards with stock fan curves without an issue.

95c on turbo mode is thermal throttle. cause if i do manual curve and set the fans to max my temps goes down to 80c. which shows that the stock turbo fan curve is not capable to dissipate the 30w to 43w of heat.
Some can yes. Some can’t. Also the particular reader socket they chose on the technical data sheet it says 75c and the mossfets beside it hit 100c. Enjoy.
well the problem is not sd card though. Albeit I don't have rog ally, but looking into its component placement, I can basically say it is badly designed. Let's put 85 degree spec hardware near 100 degree spec hardware. Sure.... (and they might cheapen out some of hardware to shave dollar). Why do I say hardware problem ? Because I had experience with a bad card reader which is if it is too hot, it will make the sd card borked. Sure 1 or 2 times, you can fix it by reformatting it; but if you keep doing it, SD card will fail. Oh also bad sd card reader is giving high read and high write spiky valley to peak to valley to peak so much which lead to more heat(this also might due to OS, driver, etc).
An update cannot fix the location of the sd card slot on the motherboard.A video on TH-cam showed the monumental mistake made by the engineers and the designers.Everyday there is another problem with the Ally.I cannot believe a company would release something that is obviously not ready to be put on shelves. The Asus Rog Ally is the biggest flop in handheld gaming history.

@@cppctek yeah i think the same because too much of the tape may start contacting the actual heatsink which sits above the sd card.
i'm still trying to figure out why my rog keeps just keeps restarting in the middle of gameplay
if you have any ideas or solution for its still the stock nvme drive
Could be temp rated
@@cppctek defective motherboard i have that total care protection with geeksquad and they fixed it
@@cppctek and they reinstalled windows 11 like i just took it out of the box for the first time and since i made ally offline log in it didn't use bitlocker
Thx a lot, does it really work or maybe is better to change the ssd ? 😮
Most definitely it’s gonna be a better option to get a bigger nvme. But my Fix does work I can confirm and others can as well.
I sold the SD and got the ROG. No issues other than windows jank. I accidentally broke 2 cards due to forgetting to take it out of the deck when opening the back… shouldn’t have that issue with the ROG lol
Heck yeah ❤
Good info
Yee yee thanks brother !!!
This is the way!
Thanks
Click start and type in disk utility. Format it from there. Delete any partitions on the sd card.
@cppctek How do I do this? I put the sd card back in and I went to disk utility and opened the app and nothing shows up, just a blank white screen with some options at the top of the window
@cppctek The sd card formatted to NTFS when I first got it a few weeks ago, could that be why it doesn't show up in disk utility?
Feel like people just run the default fan curve and don’t check temps then fry their cards
Yep or format ntfs which is for boot drives not sd cards. Use exfat
@@cppctekquestion so I shouldn't format ntfs for my microsd?
Should you disable CPU Boost?
Check out my tuning guide on my live. I run everything with the power sliders maxed out usually
Sandisk has a lifetime warranty on most cards
Dam hopefully mine dosen't fail 🤞
I just got my ally last night and have two questions.
What setting do I change to prevent my pc downloads/deletes from downloading/deleting on my ally and vise versa?
Also, I played “the outlast trials” first thing after updates and the color quality was pretty dull and almost warm. Were my expectations a bit too high on the screen or have I overlooked a setting?
Be sure to disable one drive. Also be sure to watch tuning guides for the game you want and see if there’s any for the ally.
Thank you. I had a bunch of clutter on my windows Home Screen for my ally so I deleted most of it and it deleted all the same stuff on my pc lol.
is it ok if i buy a silicon power ssd to use on my rog ally?
or it has to be the brand you showed on the video?
Yeah as long as it’s a 2230 form factor (the short short one.) if not you’ll need the 2280 mod. Have you seen my latest mod video ? th-cam.com/video/GYUOwa78wmg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-RyLCXrxaa291FDY
@@cppctek thank you so much brother! i’ve been watching your videos.
Thanks bud.
I'm really surprised at my R23 score run to run. 14200 to 15200ish. I've done some optimization. I've got the fan curve way up and nothing else running. I repasted it with conductonaut.
Oh my old thermal paste was hard as a rock and was flaking off. Like it's been sitting in 100-degree warehouse for 6 months or a year.

Hope it will not be 100% Fans since that would make the gaming experience garbage. 100% fans are by far too loud for latenight bedroom gaming without headphones…
Nah but you see the stock turbo fan speeds are way too low
@@cppctekThey very loud on 100%. Tested it last night and my wife next to me in bed complained. Anyway…I always play in bed plugged in with Turbo 30w and the APU temp usually stays at 80C with stock fan curves….
Thank you sir.
Most welcome! Be sure to check out my new tuning guide ! th-cam.com/video/8ui9kcp9E-4/w-d-xo.html
Short version: Don't buy the ROG Ally. It destroys SD cards. Terrible design.
Not anymore. It’s fixed on all the new revisions and they’ll fix it free under recall with the new revised board
hase anyone's tryed them sd card extension and is it safe to use a sd card as im goner get a asus ally soon and was goner buy sd card but heard they killing the sd cars xD
Extension won’t help. It’s the chip on the board that’s overheating for the reader. All of MY ROG Ally Mods + How I clone my drives with one button! Feat. Yottamaster NVME Duplicator

Heyyy wuz up man I don't know if it happen to you yet but my Ally is not reading my 1tb SanDisk micro sd card but if I use a micro sd to usb c adapter it would work smfh 🤦 I looked everywhere for a fix and nothing I updated the card drive and disabled it and enable it anddddd nothing lol smh sucks I know it's differently a software issue but nothing that i can fix yet that I know of........if you hear of any fix let me know man ✌️✌️✌️
I have no issues with the fan on my steam decks, must people complain about it because they run games at 15w. All the games I play i lower the res with 9w and use fsr and it works and looks very well.
Nice ! I ran all mine at full tdp and still struggled to hit the fps I wanted so the fans were loud on mine lol. It’s a great device for a lot of folks tho and is very simple at times
@@cppctek well 40fps is what I use and it's not a big deal to hit 60fps. Great info keep it up Im going to use my Rog with a custom fan curve just in case.
Hes talking like that because he slaped windows on the deck ,windows dont run the system deck properly
it over heats it
Well i had a nintendo swicth with sd card in it for 4 years ,it never failed
And my steam deck so far so good 👍 and windows dont belong on handhelds that rog alley needs its own os ,and steam big picture mode
Its not the same has steam deck gaming mode
i had a switch on launch day and went through quite a few esp once modding became available and running larger roms was pretty much a big test.
Both Switch and Steam Deck had problems with sdcard at launch
Not sure im quite happy that is windows. Can open work aps on the go if I need. Switch is totally different in terms of power do is not good comparision. Is my fave console from PSP time but still is week in terms of power. Never had steam deck tho.
Dude you know I'm thinking to fix my burned-out microsd driver is switching it with another one taking it out and putting a new one.....where do you think online where I can find one for it?....
From what I have been told you may have better luck with reflowing the chip for the sd reader. Apparently it’s actually not soldered perfectly on some and a reflow can help. I’ve not done one yet since mine works but …… dm me I may and it’s a big may I may can help assist some how some way either myself doing it or me referring you to someone who can as well. Hmu on discord in the dms I may take a second to get back I’ve got company over tommorow
@cppctek all right cool I'll hit you up as soon as I can thanks man
Most of the steam deck issues with sdcard wasn’t failures lmao, it was the formatting issues since the native system runs on Linux.
Not all of them but still they failed and people blamed it.
@@cppctek of course you're going to see some fail with the massive volume of Steamdeck being sold, but that's nothing compared to the amount of card failure the ally is dealing with.
My card reader died within a month of purchase 😅
Oof.
Mine in 2 weeks!!!!!
find a solution? yes, i just return it, hhhhhhha.......i have had it enough.
Only time will tell I guess. I’m enjoying mine and running into no issues so far and been using it since launch day heavily every day. I’ve helped a ton of folks in the discord so if you find yourself having any game issues or lags or stutters hmu I’ll share my settings and we can see what’s happening. I also am the record holder for cinebench r23 on the rog ally in case you know anyone who’s willing to challenge it lol. I’ve posted my scores on the community page. So far I’ve paved the way for tuning and helped people gain substantial increase in overall performance. This machines a beast. I want everyone to enjoy it’s potential. Some tuning def should be done and it helps a lot
@@cppctek absolutely, and I will definitely join in. I've always loved benchmark competitions. I do appreciate the videos though and I do want to reiterate that I'm not saying you're wrong.
95c on turbo mode is thermal throttle. cause if i do manual curve and set the fans to max my temps goes down to 80c. which shows that the stock turbo fan curve is not capable to dissipate the 30w to 43w of heat.
microsd cards can run at 85C sustained
😂 Wtf
First time having a gaming console ? 😂
All. Psp. Ps1 , ps2 , ps3. Xbox. Ps4. Dreamcast , everything had their "problems " on the first batch 😅
I don't get why u so worried about how hot the ssd drive gets lmaoo
You didn’t see my video where I talked to drive manufactures. Also you prob should Watch jayz2cents video and a million other tech videos that have warned for years on how hot gen 4 drives get and why temps do matter. You obviously are a sheltered child who’s never had a drive fail or at least if you have you didn’t know why. I’ve been around a lot longer and built more rigs than I can count.
Yep and you’re the type of person to sit there and watch your devices burn because you’re uneducated.
Consoles, Laptops, Handhelds hell even Desktops.
FUCK "neutral" noise, I'm okay with it sounding like a motherfucking jet engine if it means it's gonna run cooler and survive longer.
Lol helllll yeah bröther!
Man I don't get it people are crying so much saying that they got to return the device and all this bull crap I say return it do whatever the hell you want to do but i have no problems with mines because the device works perfectly fine because I know how to tune it... now for the people that don't know how to tune it you just have to wait for updates that'll fix it automatically I didn't hear that many people cry when the steam deck had all these issues in the beginning but now they're talkin all this BS about this device because so far this device is better than the steam deck some hater yo lmao smh 😂🤦🤦 and the funny part is that I own steam deck and now that I have the Ally I use it more than a steam deck
Console players are whining babies ❤ they just need to go buy a switch
