I understand how you feel. No matter how clean it looks, job #1 when you move into new-to-you accomodations is to clean AND disinfect any hard surface your body will come in contact with. Tub, toilet, etc.

I'm not sure that's a great solution tbh. Everyone needs *somewhere* to live, and in cases where it gets as bad as this you can only assume there must have been quite severe mental health challenges.

He's in places that full bio hazard suits would struggle to contain. A mask could genuinely be more dangerous than no mask in such a scenario. The sheer billions of particles would coat the mask within a few minutes and then he'd be breathing it in from a source strapped to his face.
I always think of the Deacon Blue song ‘Dignity’ about a council worker who cleans the streets and is saving up to buy a dinghy when he retires, called Dignity and he plans to sail around the coast. It’s a brilliant song about the dignity of work no matter how apparently lowly.
I just wonder... Why they let flats get to such state? A bathroom like this would obviously stink even outside the flat. Why nobody called earlier to report the smell?
Maybe someone did call to complain about the smell. But I know from personal experience that the process to get someone evicted can sometimes be pretty long and arduous. Obviously it varies from area to area, but laws on tenancy and eviction are often heavily weighted in favour of the tenant.
It may not smell due to insulation, air circulation/drafts from other flats in multiple occupancy buildings are usually kept to a minimum (fire safety). This is why dead people are sometimes only discovered when their rent stops.

Cats are excellent hunters and kill the native wildlife, like rosellas, possums, little marsupials and bush turkeys (in this area). Cats aren't native to Australia. Secondly, cats who live indoors, on average, live longer than outdoor cats because they don't get run over, don't get into fights with other cats, where they can get injured. If I was to let my cat out, she'd killed the animals she happily chirps at from the window, would roam and fight over territory, annoying neighbours, and she'd run on the road. I adopted her 14 years ago as a rescue, and she's been my shadow ever since. All she wants is a human, food, clean litter and a sunny window sill.

A wild bird caught by a cat with no wounds (even birds that look in the rubbish for food) is given strong antibiotics by default because the cat's saliva and claw bacteria will kill them otherwise.
As a supermarket delivery driver, I remember this one particularl customer, English woman, early 40s, ordered couple times a week. Spent at least £30 worth of shopping each time. Very civil, sophisticated outlook and came across as a polite person. But each time I arrived at her address, I could see through her living room window, the area was absolutely filthy, hasn't hovered in months, carpet looked grim, beer cans and wine bottles all over the place, letters scattered everywhere, letterbox hanging off. Lived in the dark. Ashtray full, once she opened the door a riff of cigarette odour just woozed onto my face. ....But the woman came across very sophisticated and polite. Strange one!
The big cleaning guy and his team are great guys with a good sense of humor. When he was scrapping that "to be" lovely wood floor AGAINST the grain though?! Eeeek! WITH the grain bud! WITH THE GRAIN 😆
Bless my cat. He is a year old, and I stopped bothering with a litter tray a month ago. He comes in at night to be shut in. He never poos or wees inside. Just like our dog. On a very rare occasion, he tells me when he needs to go out during the night. I'm so lucky.
Depression is usually the culprit behind all of this disgusting filth unfortunately. These workers hopefully have clean and nice homes to go to after dealing with these messes. I can't imagine the money the landlord's lose 👀

Some folks just don't know how well off they are. These people who use a flat/house for an internal rubbish dump - I can pretty much guess they don't own the property, so therefore think it's ok to have their filth deposited around them.
Same with those who have council houses and completely trash them. And, to make matters worse, they walk away without paying the costs of the cleaning and/or renovation caused by their filth. This society has become so entitled, it baffles me.

Theres needs to be a big culture change made in the UK. I lived in Finland for a few years and no one drops litter there. If people cared more and felt responsible about their environment, it would be a far nicer country to live in.
Honestly, street cleaners should be among the most highly respected professions in society. If it wasn't for them, we would be drowning in filth and garbage, because using a trashcan is apparently too difficult for many people. I have huge respect for them.

All those roaches and bedbugs and thoughts of fleas have me itching all over! Seeing this stuff makes me glad I never knew what shape a prior tenant left the place in before I moved in, or I'd be living outside.
A fire in those shipping containers is no joke, a guy 30min away from me had one on his rural property for storage, he had a couple cans of some type of fuel in it and one caught fire. It being an almost airtight container, there was only a little smoke coming out, fire department showed up and they were getting set up when a second fuel can ignited which blew the heavy metal front door off the container killing a firefighter
I don't know how true it is or not but I read somewhere that depression sets some people to let their houses go to this state. Clearly some kind of mental health issue is going on with the tenants. Not just being overwhelmed with housework and giving up on it. Also I can't imagine the cats. Having to walk thru your own excrement pile to go to the bathroom. Ugh. May these people get the help they need and god bless those who clean up to make the dwellings habitable again.

I worked for a property management company in California. There was a yearly inspection of all properties. It was a spelled out in the lease.
The complaint system is torturously slow. They probably did & it took this long to get it sorted.

Used to live like this I’m ngl, we did vent have maggots or nothin but a lot of clothes and food,but then something clicked and me and my dad suddenly changed and now are really clean it’s cool to look back and to see what we used to live in and how we’ve changed
Theres needs to be a big culture change made in the UK. I lived in Finland for a few years and no one drops litter there. If people cared more and felt responsible about their environment, it would be a far nicer country to live in.

Honestly, street cleaners should be among the most highly respected professions in society. If it wasn't for them, we would be drowning in filth and garbage, because using a trashcan is apparently too difficult for many people. I have huge respect for them.

I’d say whoever lived there suffered greatly from depression and alcoholism. That kind of outcome can’t be just down to laziness. There’s more going on, in the same way that if you dig into it, morbidly obese people who have a food addiction are not that big just because they like food. It’s very sad

All those roaches and bedbugs and thoughts of fleas have me itching all over! Seeing this stuff makes me glad I never knew what shape a prior tenant left the place in before I moved in, or I'd be living outside.
Makes me wonder about the apartments I've rented over the years.. were they ever in this condition before I moved in?? Ewwww!

A fire in those shipping containers is no joke, a guy 30min away from me had one on his rural property for storage, he had a couple cans of some type of fuel in it and one caught fire. It being an almost airtight container, there was only a little smoke coming out, fire department showed up and they were getting set up when a second fuel can ignited which blew the heavy metal front door off the container killing a firefighter
They should have put the tenant in one of the bags as well. That would resolve the problem but now it will move to a different place.

I don't know how true it is or not but I read somewhere that depression sets some people to let their houses go to this state. Clearly some kind of mental health issue is going on with the tenants. Not just being overwhelmed with housework and giving up on it. Also I can't imagine the cats. Having to walk thru your own excrement pile to go to the bathroom. Ugh. May these people get the help they need and god bless those who clean up to make the dwellings habitable again.
