  • Language alert - there is some swearing in this video.
    On their approach to Gibraltar this afternoon, Team JAJO encountered a pod of orcas which led to a scary moment on board the VO65! Thankfully, the marine mammals, the crew and the boat are unharmed. The Dutch boat skippered by Jelmer van Beek is now back on its way to Genova.

    This is crazy, it's not an attack at all (as news sites around the world are claiming)....the rudder looks like a seal (large, dark, cylindrical in appearance) the orca bumps it to see if it's a seal or something else.....it realizes "oh that's not a seal" and swims away. Ridiculous for news sites to call this an attack. Cool video, footage is great, good luck and stay safe out there sailors.

    • @cuckmyfunt
      @cuckmyfunt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They’re not “scratching”. They are literally doing things on purpose to upset the boat. Go read the few other incidents in the past 2 weeks.
      These animals obviously have the ability to communicate information to their young and others in their pods to create “trends”. This is a new trend just recently starting which involves orcas attacking the rudder points on boats.

      This seems like propaganda to me… In my opinion, the orcas are trying to get us out of their waters and stop our pollution. They are smart and in tune with their environment. Scientists discovered that Earth's tilt has changed because of the amount of ground water pumped by humans. I really don’t think this is for scratches or to be playful. We will probably see a lot of other species following suit, the deeper we get into the climate crisis.

    • @robm.4512
      @robm.4512 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, possibly.
      The problem has really occurred when they’ve bitten large lumps of rudder off.
      A vessel was sunk through the rudder stock tube being broken out of the hull a few weeks ago, not far from where this encounter happened.
      It’s becoming a bit of a game of Russian Roulette to sail down the western seaboard of Spain now, several sailing vessels have taken pretty severe damage.

    • @uainteasyb
      @uainteasyb ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robm.4512 Yea it seems to be an ongoing thing, these mammals are smarter than we seem to think, they learn from issues that they have encountered with vessels. So crazy to think . My Dad came through Gilbralter after a trip through the locks in Europe in the 80s. Matter of fact I dont think Orcas were even around that area back then , weird. He sailed a southern cross over from ny.

    • @robm.4512
      @robm.4512 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@uainteasyb Yeah, too right they’re smart, we always seem to underestimate the fact that they’re the apex group-predator of the sea, as we are in reality of the land.
      Whenever I see this sort of footage it makes me wonder whether it’s either become a favourite game of “dare” for them, like kids goading each other to do something wicked, or whether some commercial fishermen had their rudder nudged and lobbed a load of by-catch to them, which gave them the idea that it might be a way of getting a free lunch? Did it a few times to the same boat and got rewarded….Then they’re habituated to doing it.
      Don’t really know, I’m an engineer not an animal behaviourist so I’m probably just anthropomorphising their behaviour and it’s actually something completely different.
      I did a few deliveries from the UK to various places in the Med in years gone by, before the problems began. If we saw a couple of Orcas it was just some excitement to break the monotony of an otherwise mundane passage and a challenge to try to photograph them.
      They’re beautiful creatures though, effortlessly powerful in the way they swim and stunning to watch. 😎👍🍻

    I think it may be interesting to add to the database of yachts that have been affected by Orcas, the type of rudder / keel configuration (shape) as well as the colour of the antifouling? We know Orcas have fair eyesight and can distinguish between different colours, but their eyes don't find it easy to define blue and green? If so what shapes and colours, if any, appear to attract their most interest?

I'm not sure this is the same as the attacks that have been documented elsewhere, the orca didn't seem to be interested in doing much more than giving itself more than a rub on the rudder, didn't try to bite it or anything destructive. I suspect IMOCA rudders are rather stronger than the plastic boat rudders though so perhaps it had less effect (says more about production boat quality than anything else).

      there has been almost 200 occurances of orcas attacking rudders in recent years, 43 in 2023 alone. It only happens in the pod or orcas around gibraltar, if it was as simple as them looking like a fin this would be seen for years around the world, unfortunately it is probly mopre likely that the mother orca seen to be teaching this had some trauma related too a rudder in recent years that triggered this agressive response, but so far it has been limited too a pod of around 20-30 orcas found in the waters around Gibraltar and Portugal

      @@itsConflan I'd wager a bet this is not aggressive behaviour, the impact on the boat would be very very different. Just have a look at any youtube vids of Orcas causing blunt trauma to grey wales in California or the various vids of Orcas attacking whales off the West Coast of Australia. It is nevertheless enough impact to sheer of rudders from regular sailing yachts, often causing stress fractures in the hull, permitting water entry.
