  • If you went through Navy Boot Camp in 2017, chances are you were welcomed through the gates by Chief Jaime Kalaw - a Recruit Division Commander known to many recruits by his nickname, The "Lizard King."
You also might remember him from our Boot Camp documentary "Making a Sailor." We decided to sit down with Chief Kalaw and learn more about the man behind the red rope and knifehand in this edition of "One on One."

During boot camp, my division and I were eating chow when, all of a sudden, Chief Kalaw showed up. He just happened to find an empty seat right in front of me, sat down, and started a one-on-one conversation about mental toughness. I was flabbergasted. I thought I was dreaming, but, no. This was the real deal. I never thought I'd go from seeing him on screen to actually talking to him in front of my fellow recruits. After we finished our conversation and he got up and left, the rest of my shipmates were staring at me in shock and awe. I'll never forget that day.

I did boot in 1979 in San Diego. My Company Commander (RDC) was Chief Roberts. This guy was "old navy", faded tattoos, cigarette hanging out of his mouth, etc. He reminded me of Sheriff Buford T. Justice from the Smokey and the Bandit movies. I was scared of him at first. By the end of bootcamp I was in complete admiration of this guy. Ours was his last company, and we won the Captain's Trophy. I ran into him a few months later. We bought each other beers at the EM club and talked for quite a while. I shipped out to Dam Neck, Virginia and I never saw him again. But I will never forget Chief Roberts, and will always be thankful. Chief Kalaw seems to be built of the same stuff.

You wanna make sure that you get it through their heads that this shit is serious. That being that when I got to my command my work center supervisor was a former RDC and actually helped us tie our neckerchief for a change of command so we'd all look on point. Remember the RDC is training you for YOUR Navy and the skills you learn there will help you and possibly save your life some day, whether or not you make the Navy a career.
