- I broke out my Savage 30-30 Winchester out again. We do a little sighting in with the Williams sight. Shoot some 3 shot groups at 100yds and do some 2 liter busting. We wrap our opinions on this rifle at the end of the video. This is a long one, so I hope you enjoyed it. I wanted to show what a typical day of shooting is like for me. The loads I'm running here are both Winchester cased and primed with 31gr of Accurate 4064 powder. Half are loaded with 150gr Speer Hot Cor Round Nose, the other half with 150gr Speer Flat Nose.

I've refinished a few guns in my life; its easy to strip the varnish off. Once the stock is separate from the steel stuff, spray it with Easy Off Oven Cleaner. Let it sit for a bit and it will bubble up. You can use plastic spoons, forks, or knives to scrape the varnish off. Then its a decision. You can lightly sand with steel wool or very fine sandpaper. If it has good looking wood, you can stain it with any number of stains and its a done deal. Or, you can use several coats of Tongue Oil and it will give it a really nice finish. Its worth the time in the winter as a project...
Actually I thought your accuracy was outstanding. Unless one tries to shoot 100 yds with open sights, I would suggest withholding derogatory comments. It ain't that easy !! Great old guns. The Remington Model 788 bears a striking resemblance.
I have one of those in 222 with a sidemount scope,A poorboys varmintor, It does good work. the magazine is cheap though I load it one at a time. I like these poorboy rifles alot,they remind me of me 50 years ago
Good to see a review of the 340! Nice job of working through the adjustments and finding the correct point of aim with iron sights. Not many can do that and as you said it takes practice. Great job!

I have a early 50s Savage 340. Buddy of mine had it tapped for a scope and put the 1” weaver base on it. I Put a 3-9x40 on it and I fell in love with it. At 100 yards it’s a tac driver. Really surprised me. Only shot it enough to sight it in and test a few flat nose soft point 150-170 grains. Gun loves the fnsp 150s.
That's cool. I also have the side mount for a scope. I opted not to use it though. I like the Williams aperture sight a lot. Plus I don't plan on pushing much more than 100yds with this setup. I have plenty of other rifles for distance. Thanks for watching.
I love my Savage Springfield 840 , it's compact , shoots great ! and its a 30-30 bolt action. What's not to like 👍

Good shooting, I got a early 1950's savage 340 in 30=30 . I got the buck horn rear and blade front sight and most times I can't hit the side of a barn with it. The best load I've found is Imr 4064 power with 170 gr sierra pro hunter FP bullet. Enjoyed the video
Much appreciated! Yeah, I couldn't do much with the factory rear sight. It was hitting way low even when it was at top of the ladder. The Williams receiver mounted peep sight was a major upgrade. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to get that good of groups with this thing. I was pleasantly surprised.
Yeah, I've been going to the Williams web page and the peep sights for the 340 is out of stock. If they get some back in stock I'll be getting one for sure. Those guns have a slow twist rate mine is 1 in12 with a 22 in barrel. I loaded up some 110 gr Speer Hp 4064 power and it grouped em fairly well. Good luck with them woodchucks.

That was a great video with all the angles and cameras set up! I was just gifted a .30-06 super sporter with no magazine and I’m planning on testing it out today. It seems like these guns are spot on at 100 yards! What year is that gun made?
I'm actually not sure what year mine was made. I know that Savage discontinued the 340s in 1985. So either way it is a pretty old rifle. Thanks for watching!

What I use in my 340, is 125/130 gr spire points with 36.5-38 gr leverevoution or 37.5 gr imr 3031. They are warm loads, hit hard and scream out of the 22" barrel.
Have my mom’s 340c. Use to be her hunting rifle.

Break out that 7mm rem mag or 243 with the right bullet and you will! The 30/30 works perfect for what you intend to do with it!

hey Chuckin BJ here :) Nice Beautiful Accurate Rifle you got there i like and support Savage Firearms and i like this Savage 340 i hope i can find me one buy own and use it .30-30 Winchester is a great old powerful cartridge one of my favorite for Whitetail Deer Wild Hog or Black Bear i have a Winchester 1894 30-30(i love Winchester Firearms) it was my grandfather's i like but i havent shot it yet if i decided to replace it i plan on buying a new 94 a Marlin 336 a Henry Rifle or this Savage 340 Bolt-Action Rifle i got Remington Core Lokt 30-30 Winchester 170 Grain Soft Point Ammo that's what i shoot B)

I have a 340 in 223 I love it! Need to update my scope though it an old 39 by 9 on it!
I like the price of Savage weapons, but I always have trouble with their sights and setting them up properly, even their scope mounts seem to be way off. I also have a savage 340 that was my wifes grandfathers that he used on the farm. It took me allot of rounds to get it dialed in at 150 meters with open sights. With my Remington 700 in .308 it took me one good 3 round group and I was at 1/4" groups at 200 meters with open sights, buying a Vortex Scope for it so I can really reach out.

Wow. If i found 1 id trade my new lever action 22 lr for it. 3030 bolt action look like they are beautiful rifles.
@Chuckin' Idk what state your in but here in cali were supposed to be 150 yards away from road and dwellings to shoot you seem on your property probably close to house and road behind you where do you live so I can move lol

@@jeffreybloom5017 It is a Williams FP 340. It should work as long as your reciever is drilled and tapped with two holes on the back left side. I highly recommend it. As you can see by this video it woks well.
I wonder if it would be possible to have ier scope mount installed. Might make an interesting Scout Rifle. Good video, thanks.
There is a side mount scope for these but many of the older 340s and 325s are not drilled and tapped.
Love that rifle. Is it a youth model or is it that you are a tall person?
I don't know as it was marketed as a youth gun. I believe that it was geared towards being a carbine, hence the "340C." Don't quote me on that. It is an 18 inch barrel... and I'm 6'3." Thanks for watching Rye, I watch your videos too.
I think the C stands for carbine maybe they just put that in the 340 C for that model I don't know I just bought one with a 22-inch Barrel on it

@@seantbr2019 if its the 340 A it should be 1949. Just went out to shoot mine for the first time today and was able to hit 150 yards out with no problem very accurate gun.

Hey how's it going. After seeing your first video I found a savage340 for my son, I fell in love with it. Have you tried the Hornady leverevolution?
I have been loading Leverevolution powder in mine, which has increased my velocity to ~2100fps instead of the 1800-1900fps I was getting out of the A4064 powder. The Savage doesn't get as good of velocities as say a Win 94 because of the short barrel and a long free bore. But it still packs plenty of punch for deer inside 100yds. It is a fun and very handy rifle. I took it on a drive this year and didn't get a shot opportunity :( . Thanks for watching!
Nice. Ya i found about 300 bullets my dad had in the shop. I just need to get a loading press. Might have to chat with you again on some tips. And I love this rifle and my 1894

Why does it have a marlin bullseye in the stock? It has a spacer in the but as well. I think someone modified that stock. It looks nice. I got one that’s pretty plain
I'm pretty sure it's all original. Savage made these over a span of 50 years or more. This is probably just one of the newer generations. I've seen the 340s in all kinds of different cosmetic configurations.

Got a question for you, got a 340, put a Williams fp 340 peep on it and it shoots low. Can you tell me how high your front sight is? Mine is half inch high. Wondering if I should use a lower front sight.
Is the peep raised all of the way up? If it is then you would definitely need a shorter sight. I’ll give you a measurement on mine in a few minutes.
My front sight is roughly .45"

How do you tell a 325 from a 340 ?
I just recieved Dads RIP stevens savage 30/30 w butterknife breach lever no model number or serial of that I hear is normal but no model number as well and no clip gotta buy one

Shoot and adjust is how you sight in.....hot loads do not mean why you shoot low......listen to your youngsters...lol
