I have my dad's Winchester 225 that he bought new with the Redfield scope. He kill a many deer with it. It is very accurate even with the old optics on it. Reloading is a must if you own one of these. Great video.

I have a Savage 340 in the .225 Winchester. I also have 340’s in .22 hornet, .222 and a 30-30 carbine. But I agree, the .225 is the most accurate 340 I have. I had been searching for one in the .225 caliber for about a year when I saw one at a gun show. The vendor said nobody wanted it because the ammo was so scarce. So I got it for $200 out the door that day. And I’m the same as you, I’m always looking for the factory ammo tucked away on some gun shop shelf. I usually buy it all. I use it to hunt coyotes for hides. Always one shot kills out to 150 yds. Really a nice rifle and works good in the cold North Dakota winters when I hunt with it.

I just found one of these today, put it on lay away. This is the holy grail for the savage 340. It was made in 5 calibers. 30-30, .222 both of these are common. .22 hornet and .223. The .225 I've been told not many were made

Hi Ken - very scarce - good that you grabbed it. I'd rate it as one of my most accurate rifles and it is unfortunate the .225 didn't catch on. I suppose too similar to the 22-250 - but I like the rim on the .225.

I also have a Savage 340 V in 225. I have about 200 cases and reload the rounds. I have had it about 50 years and have not fired it much. I have the original boxes the ammo came in and they were $4.90 per box. Maybe this summer I will see what the 10X Lyman can group.

A cool gun in an oddball caliber with a barrel band that adds a touch of class. Honestly, what's not to love about such a rifle?

As a Rifleman, if you have been around firearms for as long as we have been, you will at some point come to the realization that Savage made some truly incredible rifles. Very innovative with interesting design features as well as leaders in standout performance and trend setting ideas. But, overlooked by many today. In the 1920's, 30's and into th 50's Savage came out with untold models and many variations on those models. Some of which set the market for type of firearm. I believe they were the first to come out with a factory produced high power bolt action rifle, even before Winchester. Many Savage rifles from those periods lacked outward finished refinements such as tool marks, bluing, stock finish. But the one area where Savage rifles stand out above others is accuracy. They have a history of very accurate barrels. This is due in part to the method of rifling, but more so because of the time spent at the hand tweaking station where a worker with years of expertise and a keen eye visually checks the bore for straightnes and places it in a bending jig with a vernier adjustment wheel with two fixed points and one moveable one that puts pressure on the barrel at the point of error. And with a skilled eye and feel corrects any out of spec issues better than any computer operated machine will do. This is why those of us that know understand why Savage rifles are such good performers. I should have gotten a 340 when they were still in production, but opted for 788's instead. I really like the performance and value of the 340, plus the reputation for accuracy they have. But the whole split bridge on the receiver always gave me pause. With what they were designed for, especially the heavy barrel V model, why would they not make provisions for a traditional scope mount ? Interesting about what you say on the 225 Win, I know from way, way back as a teen, that unknowledgeable Lee Enfield owners would have fits with cartridge feeding and jams. This was due to the rim of the .303 British case. When a rimmed case, .303, ..30-30 and the 225 Win are loaded in a box magazine, it is paramount to insure that the case rim of each round is in front of the previous rounds rim. If not, you WILL have all kinds of feeding and cycling issues, no doubt about it ! Take care my friend, be safe and healthy, and keep smithing and shooting . Best regards.

Thank you Bob - great advice and observations as always. Two of my favorite rifles are Savage Super Sporters - one in 30-30 and the other in 30-06 - very simple and consequently : brilliant. Also accurate, all steel and handle beautifully. My best to you Bob!

So interesting, as always. Also, thank you for showing these cartridges for comparison. Very thoughtful. I have never seen a .225 Winchester that I can remember. I am a huge fan of .22-250. I find that caliber to be an outstanding performer. I truly appreciate your enthusiasm for these rifles. You educate all of us, and for me personally, you give me things to keep an eye out for when I'm looking, which is often. This is so much fun, even though it is also bad for my savings account. LOL...Thanks for all you do.

I had a 30-30 340 Savage when I moved back to MI we had a gun shop up in UP that had 1000s of used guns I got it for $110.00. accurate had a rear peep sight kicked worse than an 06 due to construction. But control feed, walnut now collectable. But for a budget gun quality was there like Remington 788.

I bought a Ruger Model 77 in .220 Swift when I got out of the Marine Corps in 75. I believe Ruger was the first company to re-start chambering for the Swift after quite a few years. I bought it for coyotes during calving. After the cows are done calving and the calves ate a few weeks old then coyotes aren’t too much of a threat. Then they are actually helpful to the cattleman by controlling jack rabbits and mice. That’s my opinion anyhow.

It is just like any high velocity cartridge. If you shoot it rapidly, the barrel will significantly heat up. High velocity bullets running down the lands of very hot bore will of course cause much more damaging friction. That’s why those cartridges are not in semi automatic platforms. Heat is always the enemy. High velocity, or high energy, cartridges are typically for long range accuracy, or short range power, providing a clean kill of game. These firearms are mean for hopefully one, maybe two shots to get the job done. I enjoy modern service weapons where there is a need for rapid fire. The cartridges for those weapons are not high velocity. The weapons are designed to handle that kind of performance and heat. Excessive wear in the throat of a barrel does not always affect its accuracy. Long story short, you shouldn’t shoot high velocity cartridges as rapid fire weapons. I’ve shot everything from squirrels to dig game and never had any need for rapid fire.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns

Very good advice - I also take my time and shoot carefully; no need for fast or frenzied shooting - neither the paper nor the game shoots back; so far.

I looked around online last night for a Savage 340 in 30-30. The pickings were slim, and the prices unreasonable. GunBroker disgusts me. Anyway, there are pawn shops and gun stores in my area I can haunt in my search. I believe that's the only way I will find one, as I don't know of any other avenues. First love watching this man, Winchester and Ruger 77 lover like myself as i was raised to be. Not much of a remington fan as i"m not in to round receivers with little bearing surface and pinned recoil lugs as well as very short magazines and ejection ports. But the info on 225 win here is not 100% accurate. I own two 225's one in a savage 340 and a winchester 70 very fast and flat cartridge Winchester made from 1964 to 1972. Its based off the swift just shorter to hold about 7 grains less powder. Both are the same semi rimmed cartridge. Sure you could possibly take a 30-30 case and try to form the 25 degree shoulder after shortening it but then you would have to turn down half of the rim down to semi rimmed, (not easy and will probably never chamber 100% right). By the way Winchester and Savage are the only two to ever chamber the 225. Savage took a gamble in my opinion chambering this high pressure cartridge in the 340 action because in case you didn't notice, Its not the strongest center fire bolt action ever made. If u have accuracey problems with your 340's full length bed the rifle, DO NOT remove the barrel band as some folks have done that brought them to me for work, and DO NOT tighten the barrel band down past about 10inlbs, you will pull down to hard and it will not shoot consistant.

Thanks Billy - Great post for everyone to read. Especially the bedding of the 340 - and leaving the barrel band in place. I agree. Hi - Can be made from 30-30; if you only want to buy - try gun shows - I usually find a box or two. Best of luck. Winchester makes a run of .225 every few years - ask at your local gun shop

The 225 is becoming obsolete like my 32 special. Funny how companies now a days come out with their own cartridges almost every year. Yet we let fantastic cartridges of yester year dwindle away. I am also guilty of buying new guns in new chamberings but I do appreciate the old.

Jake Outdoors I stick with the tried and true, 30-06, 270, 30-30 but the last two deer fell to 5.56 Sig Mod 400 AR

USOG it really is! Interesting to note that the .22 savage high power is also a .30-30 necked down to .22

What's the twist rate on the Savage? Is it the same as the Winchester M70....1:12?

My grandpa had one, chamber way to big. Ruined brass in one shot.

Sadly, there are too many different calibres that do the same thing. Some become oddball as shops cannot carry all the ammunition. Then there are the wildcats where ammo is converted. The current fad is the 6.5 Creedmore. In a few years that will be obsolete too. There is no point in having a firearm you can't find the ammo' for.

Eh I really doubt the creedmoor will go out of fashion. It's made too much of an impact in too short a time.
      Which is a shame. I'm a 260rem fan myself.

I have a great idea. Let's invent a modern new calibre that does everything. We can name it in honour of Homer Simpson's home town and call it the 30.06 Springfield. Everybody should have one. But then, currently the political heavyweights say "buy a shotgun" If there is any trouble just get your wife to take it out on the balcony and give a couple of blasts and they won't come near you. Buy a shotgun.
