Yet another Captain drone classic. Loved the shots and also love that it shows all the possibilities for drone mishaps when using on a sailboat. It's stuff someone may not consider until trying to land back aboard. Especially FPV.

I'm glad you brought the Mini 3 Pro in before those super strong winds came in as that would have really up the ante with the landing / hand grab! I'm enjoying my Mini 3 Pro, but I have absolutely no plans of taking off or landing on a boat... I'll leave that to professionals such as yourself, Steve!

Wow, that is a tight landing on a sailboat with all that rigging and the sails. I routinely drone on the Ottawa River too but from a power boat with a landing spot at the front of the boat. My "formula" for successful recovery is as follows:
1- Just before you land, update the home point to where you are (DJI should have a software option where the drone "follows the controller" for continuous updating of the home point " automatically, but doesn't)
2- Then activate return to home. When you actually see the drone coming down, cancel the RTH. Then switch to Tripod mode and turn off accident avoidance. Then slowly and carefully bring it to home on the landing pad goin down and forward at the same time. This IS easier said than done, but with extra care, I find it works as well as anything else I've found to land the drone. It must be done slowly and carefully as the boat is continually drifting. The Tripod mode gives you maximum control at slow speeds..
This works for me using the Air 2 and Zoom. Doing this, I have lost my fear of flying over water......
Very pleasant video to watch btw...thank you as always for your efforts

@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Well enough if one is very careful. I really think that DJI should have the option for the home point to follow the drone.
We often do videos where one person drives while the second manoevers the drone to take shots along certain historical routes (like the Opeongo trail north of Ottawa). Just before we land, we always update the home point to at least bring the drone close to where we have stopped along the way. If would be nice to have this as an option in software.
      Cheers !!

Last year in the Tyrolian Alps I let my Mini 3 Pro fly up from our narrow balcony form a small table. Landing was the same. I had the option to switch off the sensors but I decided to land with the sensors on. You can do this easily if you land the M3P sideways, the obstacle avoidance is blind to the sides. Worked like a charm.

Almost all my flights are from boats. A couple of things I can tell you I do to make my life less stressful. I have a catch handle mounted that protrudes directly below my Mavic 2 Pro. Once I'm close to the boat I turn 180 so I can reverse in, line of sight. That way I'm not having to think about left being right etc. I get a good catching altitude set up, then back in to position and catch with my left hand. Always a. relief to get the thing back on board. If you want to see some really clever flying from boats look for Volvo Ocean Race drone footage.

I have also used monofilament fishing line a d a small weight. That is not really Ll that good as the drone still tries to remain in ins same sport in space you it goes into hyperactive and starts pulling making it harder to capture and turn upside down

Yeah, It can really be tricky to land a drone on a boat.😅 I also have done that. It was a moving boat on a river. But at first I thought it was hard to land. But if you have a steady hand and you match the speed of the boat then you just pick your drone out of the air.🤗

  • @typxxilps
    @typxxilps ปีที่แล้ว +1

lot harder to land on a racing shell, I mean a mens rowing single while rowing sessions. RTH does not work, the drone does not want to land cause it recognices water as unsafe spot.
Only on the very last seconds cm above the deck it recognise the hull as safe spot. We use it for training purpose as a follow me flying camera but the DJI are not that good for that compared to the skydio and the beacon. But that is even harder to land and has far less flight time.
So take a canoe and try it again cause it has a bigger deck then a single, a rowing boat.

Interested to see this video as the most use our Mini2 gets is on our boat. That sunshade did not do you any favours on your bil's yacht as the cockpit is about the only realistic place you can land - it also has the advantage of having coamings round it meaning that if things go pear shaped your precious aircraft won't go over the side. I've only had one dodgy landing out of many and no damage was caused. There are also only two hazards in this area - the topping lift (keeps boom up) & the back stay (keeps mast up) and it you move the boom to the side and secure it then you will end up with a Mini2 sized entrance down into the cockpit where I place a drone helipad thing.

My trick for landing a FPV on a boat? Requires a 2nd person to hold a large beach towel open, and "catching" the quad. Works great. P.S. A "motor" is electric, a "engine" is gas\diesel.

I had to land with a mavic on a sailboat during sailing on open water. This was really difficult because of the lines everywhere and the waves. The trick is that I have to shut off all the sensors of the drone. I need five or six tries and a second man that catch the drone by hand. But it work and all were happy about it.

Love sailboats even though we have only owned speed boats and a pontoon boat when the kids were growing up. I watch several sailing and camping channels and all use drones for great artistic video.

Question: How much weight do you think the Mini 3 Pro could hold while using either the regular battery or the Plus battery? I'm guessing not much, but do you think it'd be enough for an anti-collision strobe and remote-controlled landing light?

Your FPV drone is a whoop so its actually possible to fly forward into a net to catch it or fly into the cabin and cut motors? 😅 the prop guards will prevent injury or damage

Hi Steve, I also tried something a bit similar in January, and I brought my Mavic 2 zoom along on a Yacht trip. The yacht was a bit wider and thankfully had no sails and was motor powered, although I like to fly with obstacle avoidance on, I found whilst I could take off, the obstacle avoidance did not allow me to land back on, so landing I had to hand catch it. The sea was calm however Because the location was beneath aircraft flight path I decided it was wise to remain low.

Definitely not an ND FILTER as that is for shutter and not exposure. A polarized filter may have helped if at the correct angle.

I do not have such a membership. MAAC is more for RC Planes than drones since it means flying in a small confined area.
