After finishing a Crown of Candy this past week, I still don’t understand how King Amethar lived through the whole thing.
Well he made Amethar a damn barbarian, they are notable for being incredibly bloody hard to kill.
Plus after the death of a certain best friend, pretty much nothing went right for Brennan after that.

They talked about it in the wrap up, but Luis knew he can't do shit against Asmodeus. It's just flavor, like, if he's being mercd by this being, he would thrash and writhe instead of just laying there. It's funny coz he said he's the one who requested to have a Betrayer storyline and knew that's probably how he's gonna die, but he said he didn't expect it to be so personal, he thought he's just gonna fight one and die. Lol, Brennan knocked it out of the park with his version of Asmodeus.

Would actually bet money that Brennan did research on what it's like to be impaled by an arrow. That bit about information coming backwards is spot on to how it feels to experience something such. Had a screwdriver go through my hand and first thing I thought was that the metal was really a lot colder than it should be, then that it was getting hard to move my hand, then the pain hit. Fantastic description and honestly the most visceral thing described here with pure calm. Incredible mind on that guy.
100% yeah. the human body interprets weird stuff. when I was recovering from my surgery, I could feel that my organs were sometimes out of place. I can’t tell you what that feels like or how I know they’re in the wrong place, but I know.
There's a thing similar to that in Worm from Wildbow. The protag remarks how if what looks like a major wound doesn't hurt that bad, it's probably /much/ worse than it feels

I love the way Mercer DMs, but I want to be a DM like Brennan. I never will be like either, but I would love to be a middleground or mix of their DM styles. I just got to that bit of Sophomore Year! The cast's collective "we are telling you precisely nothing" reaction was so real!
That conversation between Adaine and her sister in the tower absolutely blind-sided me when I watched it for the first time. I had recently moved back home to help take care of my dad who has Alzheimer's. Brennan played the conversation beats so perfectly; the repetition, confusion, and fearfulness, really too perfectly because I immediately started fully crying when I realized what had happened to her hah

he really encapsulates the feeling that that person is living the most horrific nightmare imaginable, and you want to help and explain why, but you can’t really do anything about it. and they’re trying so fucking hard, they’re looking at you with confusion and fear, all while they’re having to constantly mourn the parts of themselves that they can no longer access. they’re looking to you for some answers, some light in the darkness, unable to know that you don’t have the answers - or if you do, you have given it to them yet their mind will not allow them to know the reason for why it is breaking. it just continues to tear up the roads that connect one’s self to one’s past and present, leaving the self aimlessly adrift in the void, scared and alone.
My grandpa just passed away from Alzheimer’s during the summer. I miss him.

EXU Calamity is the Rogue One of Critical Role. We knew they were almost certain to be party wiped. We got attached anyways.
I wish I'd cared about anyone in Rogue One as much as I cared about these characters. The robot is the only one I gave a shit about. But that's not down to the predestination, which I've seen done well elsewhere (e.g. Valkyrie). Just bad writing, direction, performance etc. for me. Something didn't click. Whereas Calamity is an utterly majestic piece of art.
I appreciate the love for Rogue One, I loved Rogue One.
I got huge Halo Reach flashbacks from Calamity.

I mean, TECHNICALLY they were not party wiped. One PC survived the Calamity and got to retire with his loved ones.
I watched Exandria live and I actually stood up in shock when I heard him ask Patia which joint in her arm was the weakest.
Idk how many people caught this, but since revivify doesn’t replace missing body parts, Patia spent the entire last episode with a stump😅

Adaine's sister doesn't have the grand cinematic bombastic energy, but fuck it hits *so* *damn* *hard*. Augh.
The little evil smirk and the tiny eyebrow quirk is so quick that you almost miss the moment where he savors the calm before the storm like an appetizer
My favourite part is that Lou spots it, and he knows Brennan well enough to know that some shit is about to happen 😂
I was just watching Sophomore Year and this happens - but during a heavy RP, the cast are all looking at each other and not him so they miss it- but the camera went back to him so *we* see the smirk, they don't. Spoilers for those who haven't seen it. The kids are in the Forest of the Nightmare King, they're trying to complete their quest, this forest is as you would expect it to be with that name! Things are getting worse so they're planning - Adaine turns to get friends and says she knows things are scary and she doesn't know whats going to happen but that she'll have their backs and she knows they'll all have her back... The team all responds in kind, but the camera is on Brennan who is smirking like the cat that got the canary and the cream, and we as the audience know *nothing good can come of this* !

@@onewingedluffy So, obviously spoilers, Aelwyn was captured and tortured over the course of a year by not being allowed to trance. Elves are immortal and don't need sleep, so not trancing broke her mind and essentially put her in a state to self reflect and reconcile with her sister and actually bond as best they could with Aelwyn in this altzheimers like state, and then she reverts to before any of it happened, back to being antagonistic and spiteful.
@@onewingedluffy if you have the time, you could search "Adaine and Aelwyn's full story: Fantasy High" (it's a +2 hour video) and there you have a compilation of the interactions between this two characters throughout the two seasons of "Fantasy High" , that specific part of the mind returning is from season 2. Basically, in order to prevent people that captured her from getting some important information, she did a thing where she sort of locked the important memories away, in a way that only her sister (played by blonde woman) would know where to find it and how to do it (that's my understanding from watching the first season fully on TH-cam and the video I mentioned above)
@@ljaquos To be honest, I couldn't feel anything for that particular story arc because I thought Adaine was the bully between them for the longest time. Even in the very first episode Aelwyn was constantly trying to be "nice" and not antagonizing her sister further than siblings usually do, and Adaine was just "I force her to projectile vomit over herself" "I punch her in the face" "I throw myself at her"
Most of that violence was happening during the scene where Aelwyn was doing her best to help out her sister despite their differences! And so throughout the first season when everyone was like "omg Adaine killed someone--so out of character lol it must've fucked her up so much such an innocent sweetie she totally didn't mean to lol" I was completely unconvinced.
She didn't mean to, sure, but I fully believed her character was destined to murder someone sooner or later. Her recklessness and cruelty is insane, and so I didn't care any time Aelwyn was mean to her since bc I assumed it was intentional on the cast's part. That they were going to do a deep dive on it later like "just because someone is shy and has panic attacks doesn't mean they're innocent lambs, Adaine is going to have a big confrontational moment where she's dressed down for deluding herself into believing she's a victim"...
And then it didn't happen.
Travis must have such a hilarious perspective on DnD. He got his real start playing with Matt Mercer and then went and joined a campaign with Brennan Lee Mulligan. Like he has played with two of the greatest DMs to ever grace this game. It's fascinating
The way Brennen says “he pulls the back of your skull and rips the skin off your face” so casually and quick is wild
It's not this stuff that gets me, it's him adding in the genuinely mundane adorableness and THEN wrenching our hearts out that makes him terrifying. I watched the last episode of the Calamity mini series on plane rides and in airports. The first half was all me perfectly copying the "I'm in danger" laugh. The second half was tears. Just, endless tears.

The look on Lou's face at the beginning draws in the other side of the table like the perfect sucker punch. All 3 of them are looking at him while vaguely listening to Brennan, only to get the most amazingly shocked faces and turn towards Brennan like they didn't know what to do with themselves. It's glorious.
His reactions to the start are so good. Lou is just trying to hide the smile that these other people don't know what they are getting themselves into. Just waiting for the ball to dorp.

What I love about EXUC was it was a perfect blend of the traditional epic fantasy setting of Mercer with the DM style of brutal realism and horror aspects Brennan can bring.
I love Matt and his villains are Shakespeare to me but Brennan’s are evil in the way that’s far more personal in his delivery. I love seeing the D20/Crit Role overlap more and more as they grow as shows.
i am on my knees begging for a one-shot or a mini-campaign DMed by Brennan with the main CR cast. please, god.

I’m gonna be real, the Aelwyn and Adyne (I cannot spell their names) scenes are absolutely heart-wrenching. And I think the one thing missing from this is the moment where Adyne sees that, despite everything, all the abuse and insults and mistreatment, Aelwyn always believed in her.
The two saddest scenes in Sophomore year are Aelwyn’s absolute broken mind and the moment her mind returns. 😭

The fact that the same man DMd Fantasy High, Crown of Candy and The Calamity campaign for Critical Roll is by turns a shock and no surprise at all. Hes a gifted story teller and he’s absolutely right about conforming with the genre! But… if you didn’t know that about him and you only knew the bits from Calamity… well I couldn’t blame you for looking like shocked Pikachu during Fantasy High. Man’s a storytelling chameleon! And I love him for it!

I love Exandria Unlimited because the entire time the gang is just suffering from Brennan’s insanely beautiful moments of brutality while Lou is just like-
“Just another day in the office.”
the exandria campaign honestly taught me so much about how brennan's style works and why it works. he's very cinematic in the way he describes things, and describes them so vividly that you can see them and feel them happening. the exandria campaign opens in a literal nightmare of a battle where a pc has been hit on the head, and all he describes is the heat of the fire, the faint movement, and the sound of breathing. it's little details, but it perfectly captures the dizziness and confusion of being injured in the midst of a fight.
Brennan Lee Mulligan is the man who, upon having control over his own PC, dragged an NPC's soul into the Shadow Realm, showed it its own future funeral, then dragged it back into the Material Plane and stuffed it back into its body just to prove a point.
Gotta appreciate the fact that he also took as many penalties to that as he possibly could, because he knew if he didn't then that soul wasn't coming back

I feel like Brennan has 3 moods. His "Holy Shit thats so fun." Mood where the players do something fantastic, his normal "Alright, you have entered combat, roll initiative." And his going insane psychotic, "Then an arrow hits you in the throat and in the gut, you break your spine and your neck is broken. We'll see you next week!"
I started Dimension 20 to get ready for Calamity and I am really glad I did. Critical Role fans are looking at D20 fans with just looks of fear and concern
I was the opposite, I watched Calamity and the opening scene convinced me to start watching D20
