I buy some things off Amazon and in order to help out more people I want to link the items I use. Some of these links may be Amazon Affiliate links. You should always check out IDJNOW.com for deals as well because that's where I find a lot of items also.

Congratulations and good luck with everything!

Starting a DJ business is EXPENSIVE. Especially here in California.
I've been picking my brain on 1099 v W-2. My biggest concern right now is how to transition from pitching myself to pitching a team of people. I figure this year is better than any other to build your business especially for a training environment with reduced wedding sizes. My second biggest concern is filling their calendar as well, even though it is just January. I myself have 54 weddings so far lined up but I want them to have the same amount over time.
Those are valid points. I believe when bringing people into your team, having skilled people and a structured procedure is critically important. When having others on your team it becomes the brand you’re selling, not the individual owner (myself). This will definitely take time.
Getting started yeah well not be able to offer 50 weddings right away. This is another reason why bringing 2 people to shows helps me. I can offer them money by assisting shows while trying to build up their book. I will transition myself over the next 2 years to only doing the top package(s) where I have limited equipment and build books for employee while building a brand. This is something to be communicated to our team and will only appeal to certain people at first until you’re big enough to offer 20, 50 weddings a year.
Thanks for the informative video! I have a couple questions if you have the time to answer:
1) How do you set base pay for your W2 employees?
2) If you feel comfortable sharing, what would you say is a reasonable rate for someone with about 6 months experience?
3) If you have a contract dj what do you use to evaluate their percentage?
3) If you had to advise someone starting out (with some experience and aspiring to grow) would you suggest to look for a position as a regular employee with an established company or try contracting and invest in their own equipment?
Thanks!
1. I used to work for a DJ company so I took that pay into consideration. I take if they have there own equipment and how much experience they have into consideration. Doing a wedding is a lot of responsibility so I want to pay them something they are happy to get and feel valued while not giving away to much of the profit.
2. I’d like to know how much the wedding costs that the person is doing first.
3. Most people around here take the deposit for the company and pay the Dj the rest. This means the company makes about 30% of the wedding cost. But the Dj is responsible for everything, equipment, client, planning, etc.
3.2. That sounds like a good idea. That’s what I did. Working for someone else will
Give you the experience of the industry and what you’ll be doing without the risk of owning the company
@@DjTravisNey thank you! My husband is currently working as a regular employee and we’re starting to suspect he’s putting in a lot of work for what is looking like amounts to less than 10% of what the company is getting per gig (he makes about $140 for a 5 hour event). Just trying to get a feel for the industry and what is fair/average and whether or not he should consider investing in a set-up and trying to work as a contract dj. I appreciate your feedback and the content. Also congratulations on your success!
@@k8tglynn that’s about what I made working for a company that charges 800-1000 a wedding. I pay my employee more because we average 2000 a wedding. You will always make more owning the equipment or company.
Am not good at weddings but am good at basic DJ ing like parties and school dances. Am good at picking out songs people will dance too. Also what do you mean by mixing? Your buddy Derek From Lebanon county PA.
When I say mixing I mean the art of transitioning from one song to another in a smooth way. By beat matching
