I so love the scene with Spike, Joyce, and Dawn 6:27 . If you didn't know better, you'd think that Spike was just some neighbor kid who likes to hang out at the Summers house. Even better, that's pretty much how Joyce seems to think of him now. 😀

Dru's line about loving well but not wisely comes from Shakespeare's 'Othello'. Not the first, or last, time Shakespeare is quoted/paraphrased.

Spike before the chip started to show some indication that he could control his base impulses. He actually IS less dangerous than Souless Angel. He just sees it as natural feeding order and survival. Spike with his soul would be capable of compassion and deep love. Hes biggest flaw is his belief of entitlement to the affection from the women he feels drawn to

You know the writing and actor are amazing when a character is so morally flawed but you still are sympathetic to him. Part of it is how much of his journey we see that Buffy and the Scoobies don't. We see the transformation wholly. Yes! James is incredible. And you are right: The show doesn't shy away from pointing out his major flaws, while glossing over those of other major characters.

Not to dispute Tara's insightful analysis of Spike/Quasimodo, or everyone else who has said Spike can't really love Buffy without a soul, but I can't help having a deeper belief in Drusilla when she says vampires can love. It's one of the oldest tropes in storytelling: The Crazy Person Always Speaks The Truth.

Spike loves Buffy because of how she makes him feel. It's not about wanting all the best for her, it's about wanting to possess what ignites his passion. So yes, I will agree he loves her in his way, but it's a deeply unhealthy form of the emotion.
And in fairness, Tara never said Quasimodo didn't love Esmerelda, she said Esmerelda could never love him back.

Tl;dr: vampire love is a kind of love but wouldn’t be great for a human. Imagine Parker without a soul. Manipulative to get what he wants but not truly in the best interests of the one he’s pursuing.
That’s what I think. Without a soul the kind of love he’s capable of is a selfish, possessive, and toxic kind of love. The way he lashes out a Dru and Harm is the natural inclination.
I think he has an unusually high EQ for a vampire, however which gives him an edge that other vampires might not have. If he applies it he has a simulated form of empathy. However, lacking true empathy he doesn’t seem to know when he’s falling short. Like stealing Buffy’s clothes. He knows he can’t get caught doing it but he doesn’t really understand the harm that could cause.
His high EQ makes him quite seductive, perhaps that’s why Joyce and Dawn get along with him so well. He’s capable of drawing people in. I’m pretty sure big blue could possibly have have burned him to a crisp if he wasn’t mindful of them putting him back together.
So he has intense feelings of desire, longing, want, etc. Those feelings are all about him. When he does things that make people like him, that’s probably a form of manipulation. He enjoys Joyce’s company so he turns on the charm and is unlikely to intensionally hurt her. However, being a demon he could easily lash out if unhappy and kill her if it wasn’t for the chip.
It’s complicated with Spike because of all his layers. Angelus also had a highly developed emotional intelligence but he didn’t get attached the way Spike does. He mainly used that insight to torture his victims. If he got attached in any way, it was to torment his victim by attacking everyone in their life. That made him exceptionally evil.
But Spike gets super attached. Probably stemming from his personality as a human. And he’ll do anything to keep the people he’s attached to.

Crush is an important episode going forward. Spike's infatuation with Buffy now reaching crazy levels, stealing Buffy's clothing, and have Harmony dress up as Buffy. We have the Domino effect here of Dawn crushing on Spike, Spike crushing on Buffy etc, and great comedy moment with Xander getting jealous about crushing.

i think ur right to observe that spike is very influenced by the people (and/or the "people") he surrounds himself with and particularly his love interests. dru bringing him into her little vampire family caused his personality to do a total 180, turned him from a meek lovesick poet to a rowdy psychotic (still lovesick) vampire, and after falling in w buffy and the scoobies he's adapting to more of an antihero role. i think the interesting part is also that he doesn't really do it on purpose, kinda seems like he can't help it. i like the idea of a vampire that hates to be alone, drusilla seems the same but in a different way, thats why theyre my two fav vampire characters in this series theyre so sensitive in an interesting way

If it's Spike and Angel/Angelus as they are in character development as of this episode - she would have to kill Angelus. Buffy is right that Spike is like a serial killer in jail, but there are serial killers who change a lot in jail when that temptation is gone, and Spike has changed. Buffy doesn't consciously realize it yet, but she does subconsciously or she never would have trusted him to protect Dawn and her mom, and she wouldn't go straight to him when she needs help finding Dawn or other problems.

    • @spaceshiplewis
      @spaceshiplewis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@Kayjee17 It's interesting though, Spike constantly has to confront himself as a demon (especially that one time that was really icky). Has Angel ever confronted Angelus and asked himself is this being, the whole coin, both sides, who I want to be? Angel is in the constant mode of toxic self-flagellation so he will always be good, which is bad for mental health because he will never be happy. And this mental state Angel is in is bad for Buffy who will always worry if he will decide to go poof into the daylight again making a different sort of unhealthy relationship if they ever got back together. Maybe the chip program sort of works in a weird anti-temptation sort of way kind of like a Vampire anti-psycho patch while they face off with the demon inside them. They can feel every human emotion and older vampires can also feel regret, commiseration, and sadness, although it is quickly covered up by hate, disgust, and anger (which are easy masking emotions). They are not quite remorse, compassion, and grief. But surprisingly, Spike does feel, in this season, these three deeper non-selfish emotions as a soulless demon.

@@spaceshiplewis it's about what you were as a human, the most your personality was shaped the more dominant that personality will "survive" after the soul is gone. Liam spent all his time whoring, drinking and doing nothing and didn't give a damn about anything else, so once he became a vampire he magnified all those sides of him because there was nothing good enough shaped in his personality to counter those sides of him. William was main trait as a human was being a "sentimental fool".

Actually Crush writer, David Fury (number 3 on the chain of command after Joss and Marti), had some arguing with the fans after the episode. Joss ran the series and every episode had the full team (except the one who was writing the previous episode) breaking everything into 4 acts and scene by scene before the credited writer went home and wrote the dialogue (and after that: Joss did a final pass). But Fury always had a different approach to Spike problem than Joss and Marti. He always saw him like a monster; Joss and Marti (and she was his romantic consigliere since almost day one) saw him, well, different than Fury.

Buffy is right that the chip turns Spike into an imprisoned serial killer, but at the same time, Spike doesn't really have the free will of a complete person. Vampires need to be remorseless in order to feed and survive, so that part of their humanity, the soul, has to go. But as this season keeps hammering into us, the rest is still there. Spike is still that sad, rejected poet, and all he wants is to find out how to prove himself to those that mean something to him, to put on just the right show, hit all the right notes, so she knows that what he feels is real. Being sans soul makes it difficult for him to have awareness about the wrongness of his manipulations and schemes, and yet, the "real" things he does are things that Buffy can't help but acknowledge. He's an animal that just wants to be more. The chip put him on this path, but William the person is driving him more than anything else.

And even with all the BS she put him thru, it was all Dru. Then he gets both of them in the same room together and he STILL can't make up his mind. Kill Dru, Kill Buffy, leave them both alive. James is such a sad puppy in that last scene! no apologies no regrets. I don't know if he chose good in this episode, but I think it's meaningful that he didn't go through with killing anyone. Not Drusilla, Buffy or even Harmony, and I think he didn't want them finally dead, he just wanted to vent his anger and get closure, and get his way. The last part didn't happen, but hey.
Same about Giles and Joyce, and hilarious interactions this episode with the Summers. Fyi, in the Bronze, Drusilla had already snapped the victims neck, so there wasn't anyone left for him to hurt to trigger the chip.

I see this episode as a gigantic train wreck that has been coming for over 3 years -- since 2x3.
I think you actually used the term "train wreck" too.
I love the fact that this episode forces you to guess whether or not Spike's going to revert to who he used to be, or whether he is going to go full on good guy. He does neither... at ALL.
He completely rejects Drusilla in favor of Buffy... but he also ties Buffy up and threatens to let Drusilla kill Buffy if Buffy won't admit some feelings for him. Without question, this is NOT evil Spike, and this is NOT Spike changing into someone Buffy can trust. Spike does more good things and bad things in this episode than we can easily count.
This is a whole new Spike that we've never seen before.

The biggest problem of Spuffy fans is that we tend to see this ship only from Spike's perspective, believing that Buffy didn't love him, just like he thought of himself as unworthy of her love. But if you look through her perspective, you can see how her feelings for him develop starting from season 5. And you can actually see that she does has feelings for him, not through what Buffy says, but in what she does and in what she does not do.

Harm is the perpetual side chick.
But she clearly cared for Spike, as evidenced by her outburst at Dru.
The question of vampire love rests on definitions of love, Agape or Eros, but also on the understanding of the beliefs about vampires.
Vampires are generally serial killers, although they can feed without killing, so the belief that they are soulless follows. But humans are serial killers too. And mass murderers, child rapists, genocidal, and worse. (My theory is that the legends of vampires and werewolves arise from the historical occurrence of serial murderers. Serial killers have no normal motive(greed, jealousy or anger,) are often sexual sadists, and can either be extremely methodical and patiently predatory, or animalistic in their uncontrolled murderous violence.)
But does lacking a soul mean you can't love? Or does it just damn you?
Who determined that as a fact? Didn't Dracula love Mina?
Is love divine, or sexual, or evolutionary self interest, or endless combinations and iterations?

This episode is among the most divisive of the series, and the fault (or credit) belongs to our James Masters, far too good at making Spike's emotions. Seeing his desperation not to be reciprocated by Buffy they forget that he is a neutralized killer, an ex-Big Bad not clearly redeemed, as well as a true stalker who is stalking the protagonist. Stalkers certainly suffer when they're not loved, but that doesn't absolve them of their crazy and creepy behaviors and Spike falls into the category.
Buffy is obviously right, as she has had it on so many other occasions, but as has already happened not everyone understands it. She turns to Spike for help when he has no other choice, if she could she would totally ignore him and if he returned to claim innocent victims she would kill him without hesitation.
The only possibility is that Spike gives TRUE proof of redemption and contrition, something that can affect Buffy deep within her and lead her to trust him.
It will happen? Only Spike can make it happen.

James marsters best actor as Spike despite though just because he’s soulless who kills and the 2 slayers and because the initiative put a chip in his 🧠😈 that prevents hurting citizen in sunnydale but has capable to have crush and feelings for Buffy when actually feels and unlike Angelus who never does nor give into such a damn but to tormenting, braking, and destruction and only because Angel with the soul who does💔 indeed admit his love but because of D.I.D of in his personalty complicates, but for Buffy also in her reaction in spike is in denial and disgusted by the fact which I gotta feel bad for Spike💔 even despite showing his weak side out of emotional in forcing to have Buffy feel for him which won’t happen, (not yet anyway)

She did the day to day showrunner duties (writer's room and the overall production supervision) like Greenwalt and Minear did for Joss at Angel (btw: story ideas an episodes had the yay or nay from Joss before anything and also he led the story breaking many times during S1-2-3). But she never had full creative control (she even said thanks Joss is in control). Actually S6 was mapped out during S5 (like every year). However Joss was tired of Buffy and the day to day duties and ran S6 like he ran Angel since day one. And of course he did a lot of work: story breaking eps 1 to 6 before he went Cap Cod to write OMWF; the production of OMWF (like 2 times the days they need for a single ep); Tabula Rasa idea; Spike & Buffy scenes in Hell Bells; the story breaking of Normal Again (he did with Diego Gutierrez) and, of course, the yellow crayon moment in Grave. He even still did a pass in every script before it went into production. His office was just above Sunnydale Street after all :-D (and side by side to Marti's).

@@patricksullivan2261 Liar. There isn't a single accusation or comment about him terrorizing any actor at the Buffy set. Mrs Carpenter talked about her days at Angel and only in an executive level (Joss was very little at Angel's set). Meanwhile he is still friends with the writers (Noxon, who was with him every day; Espenson and Petrie worked form him in The Nevers and almost every writer worked with him in other shows), Denisof, Hannigan, Acker (his wife even painted her just a few months ago, at his house), Tom Lenk or Tony Head (they had a dinner in London just last Christmas). But yeah, the fans, their imagination after 2-3 tweets and the Mark Chapman syndrome LOL.

    04:09 - 04:13 🤣🤣🤣 04:24 - 04:33 I don't. I hate him,but I must admit he can be pretty funny.Occasionally.
05:17 - 05:27 No,because she's the Slayer..she can take care of herself.Dawn _clearely_ can't.That's why she has to be protected by Buffy..it's basically what her _whole storyline_ revolves around,remember?X-P

It's like saying that a harmless dog and a rabid dog with a muzzle are the same!X-[ 08:26 - 08:34 SEE?!?!THANK YOU,BUFFY!!!💛 05:42 - 05:45 IF we can,FIRST we give him a soul and THEN *MAYBE* we make Buffy fall in love with him!NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND,PLEASE!!!!!!!X-O
