His complexity wasn't necessary. He needed to be straight up evil. A representation of the Fire Nation's grip on the world. An impossible feat for Aang to overcome.
If they had made him more complex, we may have sympathized with him more. Then there wouldn't be any tension in the final battle because we would automatically know that Aang would not kill him.
Ozai is my third favorite character in the show. Mark Hamill has a bit to with that.

From how he describes how he came up, I always thought it was fascinating how Mark was someone who came up wanting to be a voice actor, trained to be a voice actor, started his career as a voice actor... then had a couple REALLY iconic live action roles... after which point he went straight back into voice acting cause that's what he actually wanted to do.
Luke Skywalker was always the outlier in where he wanted his career to go.
Hamill is a hero of mine and I've never even liked Star Wars. Just comes across as such a humble and honest guy, despite being so clearly talented.

I’ve loved Mark Hamill since I was four years old and first watched Star Wars and discovering that he is in fact a delightful ray of warmth sunshine and laughter has been one of the most satisfying things in my adult life. He really genuinely just seems like a delight. Long live Mark Hamill and may the force be with you always.

Mark is actually a little bit right at the end there: being able to do impressions is a great way to hone your voice, but no one is going to hire you based off of impressions (unless, of course, you're auditioning for a role recently vacated by a deceased actor).
You have to find your own voice, your own technique, and make yourself memorable on your own terms!
I know this is older but in rare instances they do. Take the VA for Cleveland Brown. He got hired for his ability to do the voice identical to the original and now Cleveland Brown is voiced by a black man and no longer by a white man.
@@noyou9379 you are right, occasionally an actor will be hired to replicate a voice in a role recently vacated through other means than the previous actor passing away. 3 years ago when I initially made this comment there was almost no precedent for the Cleveland-esque situation and I won't lie I think it's wonderful that this sort of situation has begun to arise in the VO world!
I keep hearing Mark Hamill as the Joker every time I hear his voice.
Cause it's basically just his voice but creepier. Love Mark Hamill but this video shows he really doesn't have much range in terms of voice acting. It all just pretty much sounded like himself/the joker.

Mark is a man who truly loves what he does. He’s so passionate about the industry and has so much respect for his peers and especially loves the fans. He seems like a truly wonderful man.
