    A minority on Québec... Québec is surrounded by provinces that speaks english and they have zéro control over their borders. Obviously they are going to protect the language and the culture. Québec needs to govern itself.

    Minority rights in Quebec... lol give me a break ! We (Quebec) are the only little french spot in North America surrounded by an ocean of english speaking people. Besides, the english "minority" is well protected in Quebec only by the strenght of their demographic number (almost everything works in english nowadays in North America : internet, tv, radio, books, etc) So can we please keep our little place french if It is not too much asking...? 🥴

      @maxcrc are you saying the French speaker is arrogant or the English Speaker is arrogant? It seems like the English speaker is in the wrong, since she never bothered to learn French. Is that what you are saying? The most logical thing seems to be that both sides learn to speak the language of the other. Problem solved.

    • @boating_on_a_budget6026
      @boating_on_a_budget6026 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +56

      Well, there have been quite a few attempts for Quebec to in fact become sovereign, one referendum was held in 1980 where about 65% of the voters in Quebec opted to remain a part of Canada and then in 1995 which was the closest Quebec ever came to becoming its own sovereign nation. The vote was 50.4% to remain a part of Canada and 49.6% Yes to leave Canada and form a sovereign nation of Quebec. This has been an incredibly hot button issue in the province and has polled anywhere from 35-45% to separate and become sovereign since the 95’ referendum. Quebec is a very special place on the North American continent, in my opinion it is a slice of Europe here in North America. And I believe that the Québécois should do everything in their power to protect their culture and their language. The reason why we are seeing a resurgence of Quebec separatism along with laws that have been inacted such as bill 96 is because of immigration that has brought citizens who speak a third language other than French and English and there has been a reaction to that. We may infact see a sovereign Quebec one of these days but as for now it remains a very divisive and hot button issue in the province. Hope that was a helpful explanation!!

    When in Quebec, you speak French. Period. Whatever we can do, we should promote the use of the French language. I'm an American. I completely understand the major issues when the English language takes dominance. This is one of the reasons why I'm a language teacher. I teach Italian. Anglophones have made this world a more dangerous place. We must and we should press firmly for Romance speaking languages to be used en masse in North America. As an American, I fully support and promote the use of French. Do not let your language or identity die. Do not bow to the Anglophone world. English, per se, is a language of trade. It intrinsically promotes a capitalistic world. French and other Romance languages are inherently beautiful and better for mankind.

      @@gachpilleur6220that is a complete and utter assumption. Just because these are the sentiments expressed does not imply they fit your box. I know many people that are learning languages and yet would also agree with this sentiment; for it has to do with factors around Canada's landscape, not the basic love of language itself... From the latter position of course they can respect the language. However, voluntarily choosing not to learn a language because it's a rather useless one globally, is literally the opposite of igrnce; it's thinking wisely about not only the cognitive benefits of becoming bilingual, but also our footsteps in the real-world.

    You just can’t demand that someone answer to you in your language. Canada is bilingual French and English, so every federal minister/politician should be entitled to speak in whichever language they choose. Period. If it’s not federal, but on the province level, they should speak in the official language or languages for New Brunswick and Manitoba. And let’s be honest here, it’s French that needs protection, so this woman is just plain mean and should know we’re no longer in the colonial era.
    English-speaking Quebeckers are probably the best protected minority in the world. They have at least 2 hospitals, 3 universities and can request services in English. Even some towns (like Westmount) are allowed to be bilingual, while the province itself is monolingual French. So they should just shut up, learn how to understand French and not demand people to speak to them in French. And of course, Quebec politicians use it for gathering support, but the issue is real and French has to be constantly safeguarded.

At the end of the day our stomach is more important. Imagine a sovereign Quebec? What would its economy be like separated from Canada? Probably not as strong since now it has to negotiate with a bigger Canada and a bigger USA surrounding it and then how about its currency? Will they make their own? How will it fare given its economy now is much smaller than their 2 giant neighbors...

    This video is completely misleading... This isn´t a question being asked in Quebec parliament. Quebec´s parliamentary activities are entirely in French... There is an anglophone minority in Quebec (about 10%), and there are lots of English speaking MP´s who work in the Quebec assembly and everything happens in French. Non-issue.
    This storm is in Ottawa, not Québec... It´s in the federal parliament. So there are going to be people from far away from the French speaking parts of Canada. I don´t know why she is asking for an English response... It´s really odd.. I mean usually translation services should be available.
    In the public service... if you ask a question in French, it is required (by law) to respond in the same language. Same for English, but in that situation, the person answering is providing services to the questioner... and public service organizations are required to have bilingual capacity, not necessarily every individual. the laws are different for MP´s... and different again for committees... where working languages can sometimes be agreed.
    I don´t get what is going on here... but it´s quite unusual, and reflects badly on the Conservatives, because It´s basically putting their foot in ... something.

      Quebec's contribution to the federal Equalization program is greater than that of Alberta and Saskatchewan combined, due to its population of 8.7 million inhabitants. For the 2024-2025 fiscal year, Ottawa plans federal transfers of around $99.4 billion via this program, distributed among all Canadian provinces and territories. Quebec and Ontario will benefit respectively from $28.5 and $27.5 billion, while $8.2 billion will be paid to Alberta and $2.1 billion to Saskatchewan, western provinces. oil producers. In addition to benefiting from Equalization, these two provinces, particularly Alberta, benefit from billions of dollars in federal subsidies to support their oil industry. As an example, the Trans Mountain pipeline project purchased by the federal government in 2018 exceeds $30 billion, in the form of grants or loan guarantees from the federal government. These figures come from Chrystia Freeland's Federal Department of Finance, available online.

    I am an Anglophone and I have the solution here. The province of Quebec should make it mandatory that any one studying in Quebec be required to learn French in School and English as a second language. Furthermore, Any one who is not in school and does not speak French will be given 10 years to learn French through classes paid for my the province. After 10 years, all services will be in French and French only except in cases of 911 calls and Emergencies. Any individual or business who cannot or wont cooperate will have to leave Quebec. this will hurt the Quebec economy but it is the only way if Francophones truly want to restore French in the province.
