    This is the first video I've found which shows how you trim the trunk of a giant tree with a box cutter. Where I live we're surrounded by birds of Paradise and I've only seen one which was trimmed beautifully in that way, it makes a huge difference. Thanks for that!

    Thank you for this very informative video. Just what I was looking for to care for our trees. But you are right, they’re low maintenance and look great in the backyard! I love watching the birds ( especially hummingbirds) take rest on our trees! ☺️

    My Giant B of P is approx 40' tall at the main stalk. I want to trim down that main stalk to force more growth but, I am not sure just what to do. Will I kill it if it I cut it at the base, or should I just cut it below the last flowering offshoot near the top? BTW, this is the only vid on the Giants I can find that is actually a big help! Thanks for taking the time to make the vid & posting it! Also, it's about 20 yrs old & it's never been trimmed at the main stalk before.

    • @skycamproductions
      @skycamproductions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      our experience with cutting the main trunk is that it does not sprout new growth like shefflera does. But what happens is pups sprout around the base. I finally trimmed the base to about 3 ft high and cut a tiki out of it. Was great looking from the pool til the pups grew around it. rick

      @lumpylady1A ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skycamproductions It's too close to the house so it really has to be cut down before it damages something in a storm. It's about 20 yrs old and very thick pretty much to the very top. A tiki sounds good & I've been wanting new shoots to help fill in the area. Thanks so much for the great info! It's deeply appreciated!

    Hello,beautiful garden indeed. I wanted to ask you what space did you leave between them the first time your planted them in soil. I want a barrier like yours but I,m not sure the distances I should leave so they grow like a green wall. Thanks in advance.

    • @skycamproductions
      @skycamproductions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Rous, we didn't have experience when planting these. We bought 1 gallon plants and planted them 4 to 5 feet apart and staggered them in two rows because we had a deep slope we wanted to cover. They fill out at the base and have pups, so they will certainly fill out the area around each plant over time. Our soil was california sandy and we didn't add amendments. These plants just proliferate. Be cautious about planting them close to concrete or nice brickwork. The flower pods really drop a lot of goo which is hard to brush off. I just cut two pods today that were still flowering but already dropping goo on our pool coping. Everyone loves their look tho and they do provide a great barrier from adjacent properties. Rick

      @@skycamproductions thanks for the info. One more question, our plants are going to be very close to the swimming pool, can the goo be problem too if It falls in the water apart from the pool edge? Thanks in advance.

      Hello Scan Truck, no we have not moved any birds but recently we had a tree service that knew giant birds and they cut massive numbers of leaves on the lower and upper parts of the trunk and all the flower pods and we lost our jungle effect for the short time it will take them to grow back. You might check with a professional tree company about moving such a big one...lots of roots everywhere. Good luck and let us know how it goes, Rick

    How many individuals did you plant when you first planted them 16 years ago? How far away from a brick wall should I plant them?

    • @skycamproductions
      @skycamproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sophia, sorry I just saw your question. We planted 13 around our pool area. We planted them 3 or more feet from the wall and have not had any wall issues yet. They do take maintenance such as trimming dead leaves, cutting off flower pods that drip on our concrete and I also cut the old brown husks from the trunk. I just cut a 30 footer down leaving enough at the base to chisel a Tiki on it. The small pups around it are now able to grow faster. Thanks Sophia. Rick

    how long does it take for large leaves to grow back from a pruned tree from the head and from the lower aspects? My Gardner trimmed to much in my opinion this past weekend and the trees both below and from the heads look very bare :(

    • @skycamproductions
      @skycamproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      David, last spring my wife decided to call a professional tree trimming company to save me from falling off an extension ladder. It was a great gift! They pruned the giants back on top and around the smaller level shoots. I was worried it might have been overdone. Was I wrong! Everything top and bottom is growing back with large green leaves with no issues. And we've noticed that the small Birds of Paradise plants are blooming better.

      hi Ruth. i have not done that. i have cut one tall plant down at the base but it had healthy “pups” growing at the base to take over. i left 4 feet at the base and carved a tiki. no sprouts on that one but the pups have grown quickly. rick

    • @skycamproductions
      @skycamproductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Erika, I wish I could answer your question definitively. I have thought about trimming the trunk of several of mine but haven't done it yet. My birds are very tall and planted on a steep bank. Because of their bountiful root systems they haven't fallen. You can see one leaning over the pool in the video. Its been that way for ten years. Perhaps an arborist could tell you or it may require further exploration on the internet. Thanks for watching my video. My wife and I are going to visit Australia and New Zealand once this covid business is over. Good luck, Rick in San Diego, California

    Hi enjoyed your video. I e purchased a home in corona California and outdoor jacuzzi is surrounded by white and orange birds and a few queen palms. The white birds have a whole lot of pups. The pups are about 6 to 7ft. The base or trunk are yellow. Is this normal or should I cut some of this sprouts back? I have a sprinkler system that is set for every other day for five minutes.

    • @skycamproductions
      @skycamproductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Trini, it depends on how much bushiness you want. You can cut them off or leave them depending. We cut them back to keep the plant from pushing the wall bricks out. I've also chopped back the root ball to stop them from spreading without any damage to the plant. These things are like hardy weeds. My stocks are all green. I'm in Encinitas CA and I water on thursday and sunday for 20min. at 5am. But I also have a lot of other tropical type plantings around them, snail vine, ice plant, orange birds, philodendron, etc. Hope this helps some.

    Great video except......... This plant is not as care free and wonderful as you make it sound which could lead people to buy them who are not willing or responsible enough to maintain the plant as you obviously are. Do you know what happens when that plant is owned by your neighbor and planted a few feet from your shared fence? When the neighbor rents out the house,gets ill,doesnt hire gardeners,and or is ignorant as far as how distructive their plant can be when it is neglected? What happens is the the plant has invasive roots and after many yrs those roots can and will grow under the fence,break the panels,and even grow under your concrete,if you happen to be unluck enough to be the next door neighbor. Please dont tell people how easy it is to care for this plant and that it doesnt cause damage except for the stick stuff you scrapped off the concrete. It destroys concrete!!! Its roots are invasive. The massive size of its trunk,when planted near a fence or structure, and neglected for yrs,can break down wooden panels. It may be great for privacy and shade or to look at around the pool but its dangerous. I know.I am the neighbor.
