I was 6’5 320 pounds at 14 also. I remember I went to Adventureland park in Des Moines. They opened a brand new rollercoaster on the day we went. I was too large for the lap bar to push down on my thighs it wouldn’t lock. They had a booth with a machine that told them my seat number wasn’t latched. They made me get off the ride. It was very embarrassing but very worth it seeing this.

@@photo7839 The harness clicked and latched it wouldn't go up without being released in the video you can see Tyre pushing and pulling on it so it was latched it just wasn't latched down far enough to secure him because of his size. its a simple design flaw that must have been over looked. and even after he falls off and the ride slows down and stops you can see that the harness had been retracted into the seat fully as if no one had been sitting it in, so the latch was most likely as far down as it could possibly go on him. The good news is that like with every tragedy, greedy lawyers are running to the aid in litigation to take 30-40% of the money ICON dishes out for whatever kind of negligence or wrongful death lawsuit this might bring to the table.

@@Tyrant_Popper ..True. The mechanism is a little like the eyelets on a belt I suppose. The further down you secure the buckle on the eyelets, the more secure it is, I suppose. I think with this poor guy, the harness only clicked down once which wasn't enough. It needs to click down several times to ensure it is secure.

When I first heard about this, and it being a 14 year old kid, I pictured myself at 14, maybe 5'10" 140lbs, not realizing this kid was 6'5" and 340 lbs! Maybe he was so large that the safety harness didn't secure/engage like it should? Seems ridiculous to me that there isn't a secondary safety belt around your lap on that ride.

Seatbelts should be added as a secondary safety mechanism to prevent this from happening the more safety mechanisms and seat belts you have in place the more safe the person will be also a emergency call button on each seat

Years ago I watched a thrill ride reviewer say that the seatbelts were really just to make the rider feel better about the restraint because if a mechanical failure were to happen it wouldn't do much good. From what I can tell (so far) the restraint didn't open, but I wonder now if a seatbelt between his legs would have saved his life?

    • @KNHarrison125
      @KNHarrison125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

@@Kin2InuYasha You are correct. Roller coasters have several fail-safes built into their rides so seatbelts don't really do much outside of cosmetic purposes. Many parks request to have them added to their rides for the sake of the general public because it adds a sense of ease when riding. Tempesto at Bush Gardens Williamsburg is a good example of this. The ride uses a lap bar as its restraint system but features "comfort collars" which are nothing more than soft flexible bands that go over your shoulders and connect to the lap restraint. They add the feeling of security but don't provide actual security

When you get on a ride like that, especially as a 14 year old child, you trust that you’re taken care of and that the adults around you know what they’re doing. If I was a 14 year old nervous child on a ride, I would reassure myself by saying the adults around me know what they’re doing, and they do this all the time. In fact, that’s what I did tell myself at 26 years old on a rickety Ferris wheel. “People ride this all the time, you’re fine”

Too early to draw conclusions on who is accountable. The recordings shown so far indicates the operators was shown all-clear by the ride (the lights at each seat indicating it is locked). It could be a fault with the ride, either electronical or mechanical, or it could still be an operator error. In any case: This particular ride does not even use a simple belt clip safety latch for redundancy in case of failures and that's just an incredibly stupid design. Most probably the ride manufacturer can be blamed for very poor safety design and can be held accountable for that.

I never negate my gut feeling, and always use my better judgment, if something doesn’t feel right on a ride I get off immediately and hold the phones and bags. But this is a 14 year old child, he maybe felt something was wrong but also as if he might’ve been over reacting and didn’t want to look scared. Or maybe still wanted to ride. The proper decisions should’ve been made by ride crew period. I think the ride should be taken down indefinitely.

From what I've read the ride was already running when he started panicking. What I'm furious about is that the ride owners wrote in the ride manual about an individual of a higher stature basically being at risk of the restraint not working. However, from what I saw, there was no height specification which I find ludicrous. How is the safety of the riders of such a dangerous ride be open-ended and the assumption/decision of whether an individual will be safe left to the ride attendants? The ride owners should know the point at which the shoulder restraint won't lock.

It was pure negligence on the workers behalf. There’s no way in the world they should’ve allowed Tyree to go up into the air unsecured in the harness like that. That worker was far too busy conversing with that specific group of people, that he carelessly failed to check on the boys to his left, where he would’ve clearly seen that Tyree wasn’t nearly fit for that ride, & should’ve got him off of there. It’s their duty to oversee these rides to make sure such incidents don’t occur, & they know this when accept the position, which was manifested by the way the female worker was asking him did he make sure Tyree was locked in after he fell. He can scream the light was on all he wants to, but before that ride even took off into the air, he was negligible, & failed to make sure that EVERYONE was secured & locked in, which ultimately caused this poor boy to fall to his death. Straight up negligence!! 😡 Period!

My daughter works as a ride operator at a major amusement park in Southern California. She started working there several years ago and now is a supervisor. She has told me about the importance of the safety requirements for each and every ride. When guests get into their seats the employees check every single seat to make sure that the riders are securely buckled in. She was working the bumper cars and the guests are told that they can’t hold out their phones to record themselves. There was a mother who had her young child next to her, the child was too small to operate the bumper car which meant that mom was the person operating the car. The mother was holding her phone out so she could record while operating the car. The mother dropped her phone and stopped the bumper car then got out to retrieve her phone. My daughter stopped the ride and the mother along with her young child were kicked off the ride. My daughter has told me the worst guests were parents of children who were too small to ride certain rides. Before you get in line there are signs that you have your child stand against with the height requirements clearly posted. She has also had guests who were too big to ride certain rides. It is because of the harnesses and seatbelts. If you are too big the harnesses will not securely close. When I watched this video it seemed like the ride operators were not checking the harnesses and appeared to not have been properly trained. The way one employee was talking made me question his professionalism with basic grammar. These employees should be trained throughly for each ride they are assigned to. The child who lost his life was a giant and the ride operators should have double checked his harness. Not only that but they should have had the supervisor for that ride also double check that his harness was secure. This was a child and he probably would not have known that he was not secure in his seat. It only takes a minute or two to check and make sure every person on the ride is secure. This should not have happened and it is heartbreaking.

If you've seen the video of the accident, you can see that the harness didn't fit properly and he was ejected towards the bottom of the ride when the brakes took over from the free-fall. Sadly, this park had insufficient training and safety measures in place to prevent this from happening. With this having the extra thrill of tilting the seats forward at 30º during the drop, the secondary seat belt seen on many other drop towers, should have been added. If it even would fit that far, it would have saved his life.
The ride operators could have been more diligent in their harness checks, it appears. But, if the locked light was correctly on, they state it was in the video, they probably figured that this 6'5", 340# person was an adult and would be responsible for his own safety. Making it even more devastating for them to find out that he was only a 14 year old kid.
I'm curious to know what the rides manufacturer has to say about this accident. And with the extreme size of the victim, were there there rider physical limitations in the company's ride SOP that were ignored.

As someone who lives where the former world's tallest water slide used to be, the one that was responsible for the horrific death of another young man, I think the problem lies with it being a world's, tallest, fastest, biggest, etc. anything. I started looking into past and present record holding attractions. I found a disturbing pattern that shows these apparatus have far higher fatality and grievous injury rates. When information was available, there was also a pattern of being over budget and over due on completion dates. It's my opinion that corners get cut to get the attraction up and running as soon as possible, without due care for the publics safety. As the cliche goes, "time is money" meaning the investment must start paying for itself, and unfortunately some of that has cost the lives or health of many innocent people. In the Kansas City tragedy, they absolutely knew there were problems with the design, so much so they hastily added poorly designed nets to keep rafts from flying off the ride. They had been warned that if a raft were to hit those nets hard enough, it could kill or permanently disable a rider. They chose to ignore it and young Caleb was decapitated by the support bars holding the nets, as well as the other riders in that badly badly loaded raft receiving significant physical and psychological injuries. The project was way over budget, so they brought in a man who had never designed any kind of attraction to get the job done. And the project was incredibly over due because they had to tear down half the ride because every raft flew off the ride. Even after they reduced the angles, some rafts still flew off the ride. Instead stopping and saying hey we need to start over, they thought, nah, just add some nets, what's the chances it would actually happen with real people on it. Caleb would say the chances were pretty high.

I was convinced I was going to fall out and die. Turns out I was right about the harness not being locked. When the first drop happened at the beginning of the ride the force made the harness lock. When I read the story of Tyre's friend who was in the seat next to Tyre talking how Tyre was scared on the way up thinking something was wrong. It broke my heart. Tyre said to his friend something is wrong, I dont know what, I feel it, if I don't make it down please tell my mom and dad I love them. I believe when the ride started falling the 14 year old may have passed out from fear, thus leaving his body limp allowing him to slip out of the chair. I believe this may be the case after binge watching videos of the sling shot ride on You Tube where there is a camera mounted on that ride that records every person that rides. A lot of those people on the sling shot ride do pass out and go limp. Some do wake up after passing out and they freak out again and pass out again. The difference is that ride holds the rider in the ride regardless of passing out and not being able to hold on for themselves. This is so sad and I made the mistake of watching the unedited video where you can see and hear the entire tragedy. I cant get that audio and visual out of my head. This rides safety system needs to be re engendered so this never happens again. This family needs to be compensated as best as humanly possible with more than just money. They need support financially, emotionally, and new safety measures on all rides in the name of their precious son, Tyre.

I was with my mom and the safety bar was down and locked, but I was small enough to partially stand up and try to put my leg over the bar in absolute panic. A man behind me grabbed my shirt and held me until my mom could put her arms around me. All I wanted to do was get up and get OFF! The panic was that bad. I don't have to imagine how this boy felt, because I understand the fear and panic. I would have died had the man behind me not reached out to grab me. I have never been on a thrill ride since. As a large person who actually lives in Florida and goes on rides : Dr. Doom in universal has literally the same restraint design, the bottom of that harness has a metal clip that has to meet in between your legs at a certain point. For me a 5’4 230 pounds/ very top heavy female could NOT ride it because the harness did not go down enough to secure me. The attendees in my situation actually came around and pushed on everyone’s harnesses to make sure, it doesn’t look like this was the case in the video that I’ve seen. THERE ARE NO WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS IN UNIVERSAL STUDIOS! The restrictions are based off of how your body fits on said ride, if the safety device doesn’t fit you or secure you, you can not ride. I would not be surprised if this is how icon park also regulates. There are literally “plus size friendly” webpages on Reddit etc where people who are larger give their reviews to try and help others based off their body measurements NOT weight. I see this changing in FL parks after this. The hulk, Harry Potter, the mummy, Jurassic raptor and so many more have the actual test seats at the front with a light that will go off if the safety devices click in to fit you. They state nothing about weight. Every single ride I’ve been on where I go upside down, or fast the attendees go around and push down to make sure it’s safe. And there is certainly more than 1 person who is doing it.

That's Universal. This was a small park with seemingly 15/16yr old kids operating the rides. They didn't seem like bad kids, but they also were not focused or diligent. Also it's technically not the same restraint setup. At Universal the shoulder harness has a certain height it needs to be pulled down to. If you can't, it doesn't attach and the ride doesn't start. In contrast, the fatal ride at Icon Park doesn't actually connect the shoulder harness down between the legs.

Looking at that way that ride is set up, between not being able to sit as far down and back in the seat as normally sized people, and that overhead/shoulder restraint not coming down as far or being held up by your shoulders if you're taller, it leaves enough room for you to slip out of the bottom. The fact that the ride tips, makes it even worse and the seat is no longer really supporting you when the rides' brakes kick in.

The real sad truth here is that this truly was an accident. This ride has no weight limits or hight limits. Also being that it is a new ride post covid it was designed to be completely computerized so the operators do not need to physically touch the harness. A light will let operators know the seats are locked. The ride does not move unless the light is on. A visual inspection by the operators would look good to them because the ride design was obviously not tested for this particular situation meaning the operators would not realize this as a danger. The harness was locked going up as well as was still locked in the same position when the ride was over. In the video it is clear that the boy slid down out of the harness due to the force of the ride while it made its initial slow down after the drop. At this point the boys weight was shifted and he slid out. We can also see when the ride comes to a stop the seats change angles from a downward position to a actual seated position. The downward seat, the force of the drop, the shift in his weight was all a recipe for tragedy. Looks like he was on a slide. Such a horrible thing to happen to this young boy and his 2 friends who were clearly distraught. Who ever was responsible for the testing stage of this ride clearly did not account for all possible situations and should be held liable for this accident. Prayers to his family and friends:(

As a engineering student, some rides have weight limits, but they are usually unnecessary. Body shape, not weight is usually the issue. Engineers will design the restraint for several times the maximum foreseeable weight to ensure there is no failure. Furthermore the seats had sensors to disable dispatch until all restraints were properly secured.

I surely would’ve gotten my butt up upon realizing it wasn’t strapping g me in securely but the poor baby was soooo young, he was only 14, he just wanted to have fun. I remember my brother being his age and being told he couldn’t get on a ride because he stature was huge; we thought it was so humiliating at the time but these things can literally save your life. That’s what the ride operators are there for; they shouldn’t have let this poor boy on. I hope his soul is resting in perfect peace, I hope he didn’t feel anything, I hope his family can get through this and eventually come out on the other side of it together. God be with them all.
