Was 14-Year-Old Who Died at Orlando Amusement Park Too Heavy for Ride?

  • Tyre Sampson, the gentle giant who plunged to his death at an amusement park in Orlando, Florida, stood at 6 foot 5, and weighed over 300 pounds. The 14-year-old had reportedly been turned away from at least two other rides at the park because of his size. The accident happened at ICON Park, where the 430-foot FreeFall ride is a popular attraction. In Europe, the maximum passenger weight on the ride is 287 pounds; in the US, there is no maximum weight restriction.

      While I agree it should be the operator's responsibility to follow the ride's guidelines and rules, there isn't a weight limit for the ride in the US. The operator wasn't at fault here. The government needs to step-up and regulate amusement rides.

    • @8180634
      @8180634 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      To play devil's advocate, the park was following the instructions from the rides manufacturer which gave no weight limit, according to this article. So on paper the park didn't do anything wrong. Clearly there was some limit that was exceeded. My uneducated guess, but being 6'5" probably had as much to do with it as his weight. Now you do see signs about the height/weight limit. But some people ignore it and think they're entitled to ride anything just because they spent money to enjoy a good time. In this case it's sad because a life was lost.

I’ve never ridden that particular ride, because I’ve always had a slight fear of extreme heights, and that sudden drop looked to be too much for me. But seeing that devastating video… how sad. I can just imagine how it looked to that young man to be released from his safety seatbelt and be suspended in air for that few seconds before plummeting down.. in that moment, I’m sure he knew he wouldn’t make it. That feeling of shock, horror, and doom… that happened so quickly, he didn’t even have time to process all those emotions before he was just gone. This truly is heartbreaking to see. Anyways, I rode on the titan with my aunt who is and was overweight. All the titan ride had/has? was a metal bar that comes down from in front of you towards your stomach, so there was a very decent gap between my body and this “safety bar”. That was a rollercoaster, not a dropping.. rollercoaster/ride, I was a teen then, I remember holding on to that bar for dear life. I had both of my tiny arms around that bar, like WRAPPED around that bar. Literally, so so literally, had I not held on to that bar, I would have fallen off, like flew out of that seat and landed wherever. I’m absolutely terrified of rollercoasters, I don’t like heights to begin with.. but add that with man made machines with half ass safety mechanisms, I’m out. May this young man rest in paradise, and may God heal and mend his parents and loved ones souls.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the boy (well, not only him), but when he realised that shoulder savety thingy wasn't properly and savely locked, he should have exited the ride right away. I've visited amusement parks when I was a teen a lot. I always made sure I was savely seated and secured before the ride started. Especially on rides like this one. But, I always cared for my life more than the adrenaline kick and peers pressure. I'm a woman tho, so maybe that also makes a big difference.

    The problem isn't the harness being locked and secured. The problem is when you have someone of that size, the harness can not come down far enough to push against the stomache or groin to keep you in your seat. It just rests at his chest. 3/4 of his body is just left to flail.
    He should have never been allowed on that ride and those rides should have seatbelts to keep people in their seats!

    I remember when I almost fell out of a ride. I actually have had a couple close calls. The first time was on a ride called the ring of fire when I was about 9 or 10. The only thing preventing me from falling out of the ride was the fact that it had a roof, which I had the pleasure of head butting mid rotation. They had a lap bar with a large, cylender shaped foam covering that could rotate. So as the ride would go upside down, gravity tried to pull me out of the seat and the lap bar provided no safety and it even activly pulled me from the seat. My dad was also on the ride with me, he was bigger so that didn't help either. I desperately clung to whatever I could, sure I would somehow fully slip out and die if I did not.

I rode with my dad, obviously a bigger person, so the lap bar wasn’t as snug as it could have been (and I was rather small for my age). During the ride, as it got faster and more jolty, i could feel myself lifting from the seat and I could have easily just slip out, if it wasn’t for my dad slinging his arm over my shoulders to hold me down. I didn’t pay attention to what was going on in the ride, I was just too scared about falling out. Why was there a space underneath the bars large enough for someone his size to slide out? Something wasn't right, if the ride won't work ,if someone is not locked in , they should have had an harness too. I know he was too large for the ride and they shouldn't have let him get on in the first place. I'm surprised but grateful that this hasn't happened to a smaller person . @@anitagoston2747 usually, gets locked down low enough to secure your entire upper body so you can't really get out even if you tried. but since he was so big, the bar couldn't go down the full way, locking in a spot which left enough room for him to just slide out since a good half of his body was barely secured in the first place. This is like putting a loop over your neck and calling it a day, vs the actual requirement which is to have the full upper body essentially strapped to the seat. and there wasn't an extra seatbelt to lock the bar to the seat which made it possible for him to just slip out. for regular sized person, this wouldn't happen. for a smaller sized person, they wouldn't be able to get in because of the height limit but yeah if they did get through, the same thing would happen
      Edit: to better explain, as far as i understand, the bar came down at a slanted angle since they couldn't buckle it further to have it perpendicular to the seat. Whereas normally, your belly fat+the angle it's holding you at would make it impossible to slide out, the seatbelt couldn't even get over his belly (maybe 1: bc of his belly fat and 2: because his shoulders were in the way so it couldn't twist any further) so all that had to slide out was his thinner upper body/head. so when there was enough force shaking him around, probably nothing could stop him unless he held on for dear life.
