On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Phoenix AZ on 1-3-21.
We're looking at a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad in Shoreline Beige & Gypsy Red Paint. The car comes with the factory 265 CI V8 engine which produces 162 HP.
The car's Owner is Ed Winkler. Ed’s had this car since 1991. He shares his Friend had this car and did a “sympathetic” restoration which means it was never taken apart, however the front seat was restored, and minor updates or minor paint work. Sadly his Friend passed and the Friends Wife called Ed and said, you should have this car, so stop by, pay me, and pick it up. Well, Ed did just that and has kept this car in great original shape receiving two 1st place Awards for best original condition Nomad in two separate “Nomad Club” meets in 1971 and 2006.
    ENJOY!

Lou, this car is profound. With its original provenance maybe the only one of it's kind(?) - astonishing. Imho the '55 Chevy's were the birth of the modern car with a final break from the post WWII design and engineering. It was a complete departure in every aspect from what came before. The Nomads in particular are some of the most handsome vehicles ever produced in America - timeless. The '57 Bel-Air owes it's chops to this car. You are a lucky man to review a car (and their stewards) like this. Salute.

Hi, Lou! You know, it took a long time for people in the classic car hobby to appreciate station wagons in general, and until then the Nomad was one of the few that got any significant attention, other than woodies. Before its introduction on February 1, 1955, the Nomad was first seen as a Corvette-based show vehicle in 1954 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. The production model retained many of the features seen on the show car, including the tailgate strips (which some people call "bananas") and the nine creases stamped into the roof. The 1955 Chevrolet lineup in general was already a sensation because the brand now had an image of excitement and youthfulness that it never had before, and the Nomad was undoubtedly the piece de resistance.
As amazing as the Nomad was as a showroom draw, there were a few factors that limited its sales. For starters, it was a two-door, which put it at a disadvantage for practicality and convenience. It was also the most expensive Chevy in history up to that time (the Corvette notwithstanding). It was prone to letting in excessive solar heat due to its expansive use of glass, and to water leaks due to the sloping tailgate. Nomad production was 8,386 for 1955, 7,866 for 1956 and 6,103 for 1957.
Although the Nomad in its original form ended there, Chevrolet did continue to use the name a while longer. From 1958 to 1961, the Nomad was still the top-of-the-line Chevy wagon, but as a four-door. Then it returned as a Chevelle wagon from 1968 to 1972, this time at the bottom of the line. The name was later used on some Chevy vans later in the Seventies, and there was an updated Nomad show car in 2004. So if you'll pardon the pun, you could say the Nomad has been through many wanderings!
Lou, you know I'm a station wagon aficionado, so I hope you can find more opportunities to spotlight them on "My Car Story". Many thanks to you and Ed for this long-awaited show and ride!
P.S. About the trunk and treats: In this case I think you should have said tailgate and treats!

This is such a pristine example of the Nomad BelAir. I know this generation of automobiles always had choices, but the Nomad had so many. I never knew about the slightly custom work made in St. Louis to make this an actual BelAir. What a fun car. And glad to see it’s in the hands of a caring owner. Thanks Lou, and it’s fun to see you do a whole line of red cars the past few presentations.

Look at the early (1957) season Perry Mason hour long TV programs. The same 2-tone '55 Nomad keeps popping up in the scenes. Reckon it belonged to someone in the production crew.

Just about the most beautiful station wagon ever made. When I was a kid in the 1970s, I saw a Gypsy Red Nomad like this car parked in a garage at a mill house on the way to my grandmother's every Sunday. You can't mistake that rear end. Eventually they tore that house down and I often wonder what happened to the car. Also I can hear the whir of the PowerGlide when he revs it up. Music to my ears.

Lou, this brings back my own memories of my Dad's '55 Bel Air that he bought used from my Grandmother’s neighbor. It was a two door that was coral and grey and I liked riding in the middle of the rear seat with my arms on each of the front seats between Mom and Dad. I sure wish I had that car now. You certainly did pick a good candidate Nomad to feature Lou! High wow factor here. The '55 model Nomad is my favorite because it's one of the truly intact Motorama show car-come true Chevrolet's. They were almost like what the "woody's" were in the '40's. High-end utilitarian vehicles. I guess you can say it was the precursor to the luxury SUV's we have today. The same idea. The '55 Chevrolet was one of the few cars, in my opinion, where the optional front grill guard looks better with than without.

Lou what a awesome unit this is! I love the colors of this unit inside and outside the style is outstanding and it is just a very sharp unit! Looks like it just came off of the factory line! That engine sound was awesome and it ran so smooth. I loved those old two door wagons. Just a sharp unit and loved the extra chrome on the bumpers. This unit and the owner of this unit is awesome. Loved the tide along too Lou! As always thanks Lou for sharing this with us!!

We had a 55 Chevrolet Bel-Air wagon brand new that year, 265/automatic. My father considered the Nomad, but wanted a 4-door, so we didn't get it. We had the 55 wagon 9 years then traded it in on a new 64 Pontiac Catalina wagon which is probably rarer than a Nomad these days. One of these was for sale in HMN last year, 6-cylinder/3-speed. A very rare drive train for a Nomad.

I think the 1955 is the truly distinctive Nomad because it is so distinctive from the other 55 Chevys, the eyebrows and chrome trim, and the radiused rear wheel wells. The 56 and 57 Nomads use the same body trim and profile as the regular Bel Airs. I was told the GM "bean counters" said the rear quarter panels for the 55 Nomad were so different and cost too much, so in 56 they went to the regular rear quarter panels..

55' Nomad, the best lookin' of the tri-five, these are the one that look the best in restro-mod form, with their rear wheelwells holding meaty tires, and LS swap, traction bars and the res, OEM look's great as well, I've had them all in the tri-five family, if you google 58' Nomad 2 door, you will see a yeoman conversion, using the Nomad 4 door tailgate and other trim pieces, looked like a lot of work, there is also a 54' Nomad, not the Corvette.......

Very very nice 55 nomad! One thing that is wrong is all 1955 1956 1957 Chevy Nomad bodies come from Cleveland Ohio. If you look at the cowl tag it has CL # .... All the body's were built as strictly a body and crated up and put on a train to go to the final assembly plant to be built.
