Hi, Lou! 1955 was the first year for the Fairlane series at Ford (also the first year for a separate station wagon series, and of course the Thunderbird). The Fairlane was named after the Ford family estate in Dearborn. It replaced the Crestline series of previous years and represented the top series at Ford until mid-1959 when the Galaxie came along. Then starting in 1962, the name was used for the new mid-size Ford that pioneered that whole class that would become so popular from that point forward, until it was retired in 1970. The Crown Victoria was definitely the crowning achievement at Ford in '55 (along with the T-Bird). It's so clever how they made it look like a hardtop even though it wasn't, much like Chevy had done with the Nomad. A total of 35,164 were built, of which 1,999 had the plexiglass roof. The '56 was much rarer, 9,811 made and just 603 with the glass top, and then it was gone (although the name returned in 1983). Who could blame Bob for wanting one! So happy that Bob found his dream car, it's quite a stunner! Many thanks to you and Bob for keeping those Fabulous Fifties memories alive!
Goorgeous! I really like this one in that it has a contrasting color instead of the usual contrasting "Snowshoe" white. I also like this car so much with no continental kit and the ungainly bumper overriders. What a tough choice in '55: Ford or Chevy? Both are stunning. Interesting that Ford buyers often opted for 3-speeds through the late '50's and even early '60's. The old die-hard fans where like Henry in that they distrusted new gadgets like automatic transmissions.
What a car Lou. My Uncle Don had one of these when I was a little kid. It was the same color scheme. This was actually my very first car. I was only 15. My neighbors got a divorce, so out of spite, she sold me his car for $12. YEP Twelve dollars.! It was a 6 volt system. Had a 272 V8 with a 3 speed on the column. My car was black with a burgundy interior. It drove like new. I had to have my dad's permission to buy it, he thought she was nuts for selling it so cheap. But that guy ran off to Texas with another women. I drove that car for 3 years. Sold it and to this day I wish I never got rid of it. This is a really insane nice car. Bob, you did good! You hardly ever see a 55 Crown Vic anywhere but car shows today. Lar
