Thank you - we have been blessed with beautiful peonies planted by the previous owner. It seems like we have fewer blooms each year though, and we never knew we were supposed to be doing this 😮. I also thought that eventually I would read up on growing new plants from seed haha - it’s definitely a complicated and unpredictable process from what I’ve read!
From 3 peonies, I've now got 36. Very unique blooms with each. Typically, they sprout best wherever the seeds fall. But, you won't see an above ground sprout for 1-2 years, and other 1-2 years for a bloom. It does require patience to wait the extra year to transplant and wait some more. I enjoy the process, but others don't. If you want exact clones, then deadhead so you grow more divisions. 😊
Frankly the 70 plus year old peonies inherited from my mother have never been pruned except just before snow for less waste on the ground in spring. In far north of Idaho. Love them dearly. They are spring angels of the garden.
Thanks your timely advice and follow up to questions. I have some peonies that never look as good as they should and now I know how a few minutes of work ow will pay off next year

Thank you. Peonies are very beautiful, have some in the gardens & would love to divide them to have more. I'd like to move the entire peony. Fall is the time to do it. Thank you.
I literally prune my peonies all the way to the ground when they’re done blooming and the bushes come back bigger and thicker every single year without any issues
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener I'm in a similar camp. I bough a house with no visible peonies, then in the late winter something started to grow from nothing. Turned out to be enormous, fluffy peonies I did not plant or cultivate in any way. I'm in zone 6a/b
The local squirrels eat the seed pods. I never dead head the bush. It's 25 years old. Super healthy. I've never divided it. Beautiful blooms. I just enjoy the beauty and ignore it the rest of the time.
It's not that anybody thinks you have to prune them for them to survive, but they look 100x nicer without being flopped over with spent flowers and it helps reduce powdery mildew issues due to improved air circulation. Definitely a worthwhile practice.
Hello Da d, we have an issue with our yellow tree peony (now 10 years old) that only gives blooms (5) on one stem. How do we get it to bloom on the other limbs?
I started with two divisions from plants that are over 100 years old…I don’t deadhead (lazy Gardner). The squirrels do a great job with the seeds and I have dozens growing in flower beds all over my yard, plus have divided many and given away dozens more. Deadheading is fine but I have found it not necessary…zone 4.
I have to replant them because we are having yard work done…any tips will be appreciated I’m worried they will not like the move. I’m in Illinois, don’t know what zone😅
Transplanting during summer will stress them out but here’s my advice. Dig up as much of the rootball as possible. Prepare your new hole by digging deeply and working in a bunch of compost because they are heavy feeders. Plant the bush with the crown no more than 2 inches deep. They won’t bloom if too deeply planted. Mulch them very well and keep watered until they are happy again. Hope this helps
I’ve tried to do that with no luck. Honestly the best way is to divide in fall. The only drawback is they may not bloom the next season. But the bush will live for 20-30 years so it will have plenty of time for blooming.
I have more leaves than ever with my peonie, almost double in size, but only two blooms. How can I create more flowers for next year please? I cut it back last year, was that wrong? X
Typically this is a result of too much nitrogen or fertilizer in general. I only add a layer of compost in the fall and then mulch with shredded leaves and by spring it’s all broken down. I have never added anything else and mine bloom like crazy. Also is it in full sun? Too much shade will lend itself to less blooms. And finally, every year they will bloom exponentially. My first year maybe 1 bloom the next 3 then 7 now too many too count. Hopefully this helps.
Ahh, you're so kind to answer people! Great video, I am also thinking the soil depth, no? I'm in the NE zone 7b on the coastline and I already told my neighbor that I'll deadhead her peony bc she won't as I have a perfect view of it from my kitchen and balcony and she doesn't see it at all. No I don’t have any of the Itoh variety. Just about a dozen different standard ones. Next spring I will have to do a tour of them all in bloom. Shame they only bloom once
Hello Dave, we have an issue with our yellow tree peony (now a very healthy, 10 years old) but that only gives blooms (5) on one stem. How do we get it to bloom on the other limbs?
Typically it’s because of not enough sunlight. Make sure it gets 8 hours of good sun. Also add a layer of compost each fall and apply a good mulch of leaves or grass clippings as well.
@@DaveTheHillsideGardener Oh Thanks so much. It does get lots of sun, but we will certainly adhere to your recommendations of better nutrition for this fall. Thanks so much for your prompt reply.
My peonies bloom so large that they fall over almost immediately. I was going to put a tomato cage around them but it was too late to fit it. Is there a trick to sturdier stems?
They make special rings that you can support your bushes with. You really can’t make the stems more sturdy and the flowers as huge and if they get wet then they’re just too big for the plant to support. Do a search on Amazon and see what you can find.
I just put 6" border fence around the parameter of the peonies close to the plants. As the new stems grow in the spring I make sure the stems all stay inside the fence. Not 100% fix but works pretty well even after rain.
Is it necessary to split them in the fall or will they be happy undivided? I don't have any but I'm thinking of getting some. I just am not a very good gardener and don't want to get it wrong. I'm in zone 9b.
My peonies have not bloomed for two years. The small bush is one that survived from the original plant that was about 40 years old. We remodeled and added on to our house and had to move it. It gets partial shade. Should I take a chance and transplant it to a sunnier area?
In my experience they transplant very well. Do this in the autumn (fall) and take the opportunity to divide if a very large plant. More peonies! What’s not to like!
@DaveTheHillsideGardener the small bush was transplanted about 20 years ago. For the last two years, I've fertilized it. Last year, it had two blooms on it. It's only about 18"wide and 18" high. Thank you for your advice. I'll transplant it in the fall. September? October? I live in northeast Ohio.
