Crime Beat: The Senseless Killing of Rosemarie Junor | S4 E24

  • In December 2015, 28-year-old Rosemarie 'Kim' Junor was browsing in a drug store in an underground shopping concourse in Toronto’s financial district, when she was stabbed in the chest by a complete stranger.
    Why would anyone want to murder the sweet, innocent ultrasound technician and newlywed? The attacker, a woman in her forties, went into hiding but eventually was taken into custody. The subsequent trial resulted in a verdict that still haunts the family of Junor today.

    She is free to be among society...just like she was prior to buying a $3 knife & killing an innocent young woman in broad daylight! She is free until - she decides in her head she no longer requires meds, stops taking them, and does something like this again. It's inevitable . Maybe then, she will see the inside of a prison, this murderer does not belong on our streets or in our communities. If she is well enough to walk out of a mental hospital, she is well enough to walk into a prison and serve her sentence for murder in the 1st. Condolences to the Junor family, may they one day see full justice served! Rest In Peace Rosemary, fly high.

      I think what is so common is failure for people in society to really understand the seriousness of mental illness. There needs to be more help and access to services. More education will help better identify people needing help before dangerous incidents happen.

If an act is not intentionally because someone is not in their right mind they can not be held accountable. I don't think she should have been released in to the community. I don’t harbour any resentment or hard hatred for mentally ill people, I believe they deserve compassion and help for their issues, however that does NOT excuse them from murder, nor does it make them any safer for the public. The end result is the same - an innocent person is dead - even if the action was done out of illness instead of malice. RIP to Rosemarie who lost her beautiful life too soon. Amen! I live with a mental illness (bipolar disorder) and I completely agree. We are not murderers or criminals but a few of us choose to commit evil acts and that’s on us. I’ve studied a lot about mental illnesses and none of them mention anything about harming others as part of our illnesses. Plus many criminals often fake a mental illness to avoid a long jail sentence. As far as I am concerned, if you are capable of going to a dollar store and buying a knife to stab someone, then you are capable of making competent decisions. A person may need to be given psychological help during a regular sentence in a prison but not 5 years in a hospital. And finally, our mental health system needs to be taken more seriously. Not simply because of cases like this but those of us who have experienced mental illness and need help.

    First off Rohini is out for a while now living in the community. Second she has a previous history of harming someone close to her and was placed in the hospital for that attack before this incident occured. People need to stop saying oh there is no mental health support. There is support but with anything free there are wait times and people have to be willing. Many of these unwell people are unwiling to get help and stay medicated. I worked as a mental health nurse for 30 years, so people need to stop with the excuses .
    No compassion for someone who refuses help when they were offered care way before this happened.

      As someone who has used the mental health you claim is so available let me tell you, the quality of mental health help you eventually will receive in Canada is severely lacking, the number of people in our mental health system who have little idea of what they are doing or even care to help someone instead of just collecting a paycheque are few and far between. As for not being willing to stay medicated perhaps you should educate society on the side effects of many of these medications, they can be absolutely horrendous and life-destroying as much as the mental illness itself.

    • @leneo1731
      @leneo1731 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The fact that you, as a working mental health nurse, have the opinions you have is extremely questionable and also pretty scary.
      You come off as a person with very little empathy and understanding of the people who struggle with mental health issues.
      You're focusing on people being willing to accept help and many being unwilling to stay medicated when we in fact are discussing a case of a woman being diagnosed with Schizophrenia!
      Do you know anything about Schizophrenia?
      One of the biggest traits of Schizophrenia is paranoia, meaning that the person is extremely sceptical and afraid of other people's intentions.
      They believe everyone is their enemy and they often belive that medications in reality are something that is going to hurt them.
      It's so common for people with Schizophrenia not to want to take medications because they truly believe they're being poisoned!
      For you, as a working mental health nurse, to turn this around to them being unwilling to accept help and stay medicated is just mind blowing!

    If an individual is found NCR, and are put into a mental hospital and that individual happens to pass all these steps, why are they not then prosecuted for the previous actions and sent to jail to serve the term they would have been given if they were not found NCR. That only makes sense.
    But also if this individual knew and was aware of her actions nonetheless being "caused" by her mental health, does that not prove 100% she knew what she was doing in some fashion.

    • @bethmackins2433
      @bethmackins2433 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      it’s so much more complex than just judging someone for the violent attack, the new standard for NCR requires that if someone has been deemed so mentally unwell to the point that at the time of the attack they were not able to mentally function ‘normally’ in a way for them to know what they are doing is wrong/weird/crazy like everyone else does. also you have to think about different cultures where their beliefs/ knowledge surrounding mental illness is so lacking to the point of ignorance and even refusal to accept that it even exists, leading to vulnerable people being ostracised and ignored by their very own and only support system (families and friends) so many factors contribute to the final finding of NCR. Meaning, while someone is unable to differentiate between reality and fantasy it would not necessarily benefit anyone especially the sufferer to punish them for a crime they possibly don’t even know they committed and more than likely are horrified by their actions because when they are well they have the same ability as ‘sane’ people to know right from wrong and know when something is reality and not delusions. don’t get me wrong i feel so much compassion and empathy for atrocious senseless crimes being committed and the families left behind whilst also being very aware of how complex the human mind is (even ‘experts’ have to admit failure sometimes when trying to work the brain out) and how unwell a person can become. growing up with a father suffering schizophrenia, not understanding the illness and blaming him for his bad choices, had a massive impact on my childhood until i grew older and learnt more about people not being their true selves and a mental illness is just as debilitating/devastating as a terminal illness and it has to be treated

    Schizophrenia develops in people in their early twenties. It is vaguely mentioned that she had some treatment prior to the crime. But not much is mentioned about that here. She herself says that her illness was not apparent to herself or others until she murdered Rosemarie. I am trying to figure out how it wasn't apparent that she was ill earlier in her life. Schizophrenia is very easily noticed. I couldn't believe when her lawyer called her 'disorganized', so disorganized that she bought a knife a dollarama. I found this so strange. Being disorganized while you are planning to stab someone, has nothing to do with anything. And is not an indication of Schizophrenia.

  • @lizmonard
    @lizmonard วันที่ผ่านมา

    That is a terribly tragic story. Schizophrenia is the most horrific mental illness imaginable, so many taking their own lives to escape the hell in their minds. I have nothing but sympathy for this woman, and at first I was thinking that if it were me, I’d feel so bad, I would accept justice… but then, it’s cruel to imprison an innocent person, and she was truly innocent. As innocent as someone committing a crime while sleepwalking.
    I hope the family of the victim can find it in their hearts to forgive, because if it was their sister who had been mentally ill and had done this thing, they would most definitely have supported her and fought for her freedom.

      Those of us who have mental illnesses are not a threat to society. We willingly take our medications and you can’t tell us from anyone else. The real problem is that they let her going back in society and did not keep her. The first thing people with mental problems are going to do when they are out and unsupervised it's to stop their medication. Why you thing there is so much homeless people... A big part of them should be in mental facility but they let them go and they stop their medication. I talk a lot with social workers that work with homeless people and that is what they told me.

I went to school with her and, she didn't know how brilliant she was. She is a published author. If this woman had had some common sense, this wouldn't have happened. She should be taking her meds needed for her mental health while spending a sentence for her crime, even if kesser, then parole and still following with her regime of her meds and seeing a professional for the rest of her life.
