Thank you for putting out these videos. I just lost a friend and avid English fisherman and watching your live for fishing and listening to your accent makes things a little easier.
Hi Graeme, all eucalyptus are evergreen rather than deciduous trees and constantly drop leaves and shed bark - it is thought bark shedding helps to keep the tree healthy by getting rid of moss, lichen and parasites. Your eucalyptus tree is showing signs of dry rot at the bottom, and with that lean, it is potentially going to come down at some point, possibly on your gazebo! In Australia, eucalyptus are often infested with white ants (termites) and also naturally produce hollows within trunks and branches. This, combined with very hot summer temperatures and volatile eucalyptus oil inside, the tree can literally blow itself apart or shed huge limbs. Not sure which species you have in your garden, but E.camaldulensis (the River Red gum), is nicknamed the 'widow maker' due a history of shedding limbs and crushing people - a man was killed this way just last week near where I live. I would seriously think about removing it!
Oh great !!...Thanks for letting me know..When I had one bough lopped off to ease any overladen weight I noted it was extremely dense and heavy wood, that entire tree must weigh several tons...as the saying goes.."That's gonna sting in the morning"...especially if its on me !!
@@TAFishing Sorry, I'm sure you didn't want to hear that! Perhaps consider removing the main trunk in stages and leaving the two vertical shoots, as eucalypts are very resilient and the shoots would take over as main stems and at least they are going straight up, however, they will always be weaker growth. As you have observed, the timber is very dense and therefore heavy - it certainly would sting! Take it out, I enjoy your videos and want them to continue!
Eucalyptus trees are very good at rejuvenation if pruned hard. As stated previously their bark works similar to the London plane tree. The tree's take in pollutants from the atmosphere and it Exfoliates through the bark.
Most importantly Graeme, eucalyptus trees are relatively shallow rooted, very dense but brittle trees. In Britain they are likely to blow down in storms, or fracture in high winds. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
Gum trees are evergreens and they constantly throw bark to protect against pests and disease. The leaves tend to be fairly acidic and because of this gums often have large dead patches around the base which helps keep down competition. The oil in them burns like buggery. Koalas light up like a tallow candle because they're saturated in it. That main trunk is coming down sooner rather than later.

Eucalyptus will coppice if felled or damaged. Monitor the rotting tree and fell before it becomes dangerous, decide if you want all the coppice growth, or just want to choose a single trunk for the future replacement tree. Our local stream has been engineered long ago for a series of water mills, so has very little fish holding sections, there should be a program to decide if these streams are to be re used in the future for commercial use (hydro electricity for local use?) otherwise be restored to more habitable configuration. It didn't help that a broken sewer killed off the mile of stream below the village, which is half the habitable stream!
Great to see it G. my brother and I saw you on a Christmas day stroll at HW cricket free yesterday and decided against bothering you given the current circumstances, but felt inspired to go to the blackwater for a quick session this morning. Keep the videos coming!

That's exactly what is needed. Years ago I did my own "gardening" in the river as did many anglers..A small scythe that screwed in the end of an extending landing net pole. With waders you could just clear enough streamer weed to get a bait in.
"Those Willow Trees were never that big years ago.." haha Great video Graham thank you, it looks a lovely spot. What a shame the river has got so low. I didn't realize water was actually drawn from rivers.
Awesome as always...I think it's the evolution process but if your property is not damaged the I advise to put a camera for couple of months to watch the progress in high speed...and let nature do its process...or else you can cut the old tree for two metres and keep it attached with the new one to support.
Brings back memories of how easy it is to catch trout on bread but you are forgiven saying your target were chub. By the way, I bet that structure was used to chuck a bit of bread in there by the workman or the owner.
Yes,trout on bread, sweetcorn, maggots, worms virtually anything is edible to them, which is why they are fly fished, just to make it a bit more challenging. I think if Chub were present I would have caught one, breadflake is good for them usually.

It’s such a shame that so many rivers have gone this way. I do miss catching good roach and dace but those days I think are gone. I so pleased I was able to catch good fish back in late 60s and 70s
I fear most will never return to what they were. And the harder the fishing gets the less youngsters will come into the sport. Fishing a moving water is far more challenging than sitting at a stocked stillwater so I can see why youngsters would find a river daunting.

Hey, I've fished that stretch of river a few times not in a little while now. Had some lovely little brown trout out of there and some decent chub aswell. Although the chub do spook so easily. I found fishing on the bottom with a good old fashioned carp boilie nailed the chub a treat.
@@TAFishing oh really there used to be quite a few really good size Chub in there but then that was a good few years ago. Been there for a few walks tho and always seen them but that's been in the summer when water levels there have been rather low. Never really thought of using cheese along there but I'll certainly give it ago there sometime.

Nearly missed this video despite notification. What a glorious church and walk to the river, then following the river was nice until you got to the urban jungle. Sad to see small rivers being neglected, so why do we pay for a fishing licence? Like everywhere else we are becoming over populated and water abstraction is now a major issue, the canals have boats parked everywhere and you can't get on the canals to fish. Great video all the way through you make your chores interesting to watch. As always packed with tips and humour a great watch to break up Christmas, thanks for posting.
There's nothing of interest to me on the TV with its constant repeats so I might as well crack on and make another video !! Even the wife says the TV viewing this year is shocking...which could be bad news for me as if she gets bored then she might find me more jobs to do......
I don't know with this Storm Bella coming through tonight..It should stir things up with a good chance of a shore Cod when it calms down..tides are increasing so Sunday might be the time...Or am I still living in the "Cod of Christmas Past ??"
Yes,done it off Miami, had Kingfish and Hammerhead sharks using it. I actually have my own kite rod with large rings for the Aftco release clips...Tried it for blue sharks off the shore but never had a take...Better to have tried and failed than never tried at all.
I think what’s happened without having a proper look myself but I’d say the ground level has been changed eg adding soil and barkchip it’s ringbarked the stem causing the rot inside. My advice would be call a local tree surgeon to have a second look and plan to have it removed as there’s no coming back sadly. The new shoot will grow but will always be weak and prone to splitting out. Your best of re planting something in its place
Thanks for the comment..it was leaning like that when we took the property over about 13 years ago, just overgrown area,no bark chip then. But I do think its faded over a tad more.
I'm waiting for it...just got back in from a dark foray packing in hazel wood for one of Mike's builds, hoping to miss the storm,I think we get it about 3am.
Your videos has been very helpful coping with my itch to go fish (which i have been unable to due to the lockdown in India) during the pandemic. More power to you. And a happy new year mate! 🙂
I remember your previous video from the same small river. It looks neglected to me, the state of the banks not good. Still holds lovely quality Trout mind. Notice you don't cover as many small river sessions these days, seeing this, I'm not surprised. Is that decline river management common down in the South/SW?
It could well be all over the place...The river locally I used to fish as a kid is really nothing more than an overgrown drain ditch now. I never seen anyone fish it .Even the village duck ponds are low and full of overgrowth. I tried to explain to the oyty-toyty committee colonel that it needed digging out to the original bank I knew 40/50 years ago, line it with clay, lower the inflow drain and then manage it....He almost fainted as he was one of the butterfly brigade but I wish I had photographed the pond way back when.A classic village duck pond, now just a weed strangled mud pit with nothing in it. I reckon its done for, they are too nervous to attack it and rectify the problem.Lots of talk, but no walk...too much time having committee coffee mornings and not enough on the other end of a shovel....They won't change I'm afraid.
Greame, enjoyed the video. l have a question: The fairyliquid bottle tops, now they have changed the design l was wondering how you make them work for you, l have been cutting a piece out of the cap lid with a scalpel blade to make room for the line to run free, have you any other ideas? Smithy has no idea!
I'm waiting for storm Bella tonight...saturated ground..looks like 70mph West to South-West...it ain't looking too rosy...watch this space...if you hear a splintering crack about 4am you'll know its in my bedroom !!
The mushroom looks like Polyporus Squamosus or Dryads Saddle. I cannot guarantee it is though from here. P Sq is edible but best when young and not too big. You would need to ID though.
Freckled Dapperling I think the Fungi is Graeme but not sure. There are a few that look like it. It's not edible if it is a Freckled Dappling as it's poisonous.
G'Day..Dry rot in the gum ??...sounds like a trip to the dentist !!....thanks for the tip though ,it certainly seems like some sort of degeneration...I wonder if there are other species of trees that throw up a new shoot when the old one is nearing the final post.
Hi Graeme - yep highly recommend you get that gum tree down before it does it on its own. I reckon it will drop in the summer. In Aus the termites would be hollowing that one out like billyoh. It looks to me that the tree is going for the light.. I’d pick one of the new trunks that is straightest and lop the others off (they’ll keep coming). I’d also try to clear a space in the canopy above it so it shoots straight up. Gum trees drop bark to get rid of pests, as part of the bushfire cycle and to suppress growth of competition around the tree.
Hi Graeme, you need to get yourself a baseball cap with an action camera bracket mounted on the front (best of both worlds!). Can be bought from the usual suspects online. Seasons greetings to you and the family.

Yes,he is back up in Hampshire now ,so good chance when the virus sorts itself out we can get out together again.
Ever been kite fishing Graeme? When it's windy it's perfect for that (as far as I can remember it's been a while since I have done it. )
Yes,done it off Miami, had Kingfish and Hammerhead sharks using it. I actually have my own kite rod with large rings for the Aftco release clips...Tried it for blue sharks off the shore but never had a take...Better to have tried and failed than never tried at all.
i think you should upload more sea fishing , great video
weather and covid permitting unfortunately. The double whammy of 2020...I hope 2021 won't be the same.
Merry christmas Graeme, hope you had a good one
Mowed the lawn today and collected some hazel strips for one of Mike's projects, then editing tonight...Never stop, its not good for you.
Late merry Christmas to you Graeme
You should see here in Derry blowing a gale and coming down like steel rods and I had hoped of some sea fishing
Your mushroom looks like a Dryad's Saddle, which is edible.
Love the video! going there tomorrow, any advice for catching pike or trout there ?
Believe the mushroom is Dryad's Saddle but as I'm only a beginner in mushroom ID don't take my word for it.
looks like Bracket fungi to me good for knife sharpening bit like wet leather if it is
😂😂dressing lead more like destroying it
It was a tongue in cheek joke...but glad you realised that...or I could melt it down for my fishing weights ?
I put them in a vice and drill them, taking care not to drill through the hinge.
those wild brown trout don't mess about do they..it only takes a second if they are there
Hope you had a great Christmas!
Gotta fell that mate, new growth will be fine but your house is going to wearing that before long
I'm waiting for storm Bella tonight...saturated ground..looks like 70mph West to South-West...it ain't looking too rosy...watch this space...if you hear a splintering crack about 4am you'll know its in my bedroom !!
@@TAFishing Wear a hard hat in bed Graham !!
The mushroom looks like Polyporus Squamosus or Dryads Saddle. I cannot guarantee it is though from here. P Sq is edible but best when young and not too big. You would need to ID though.
Nice Tarpon on the wall.
Freckled Dapperling I think the Fungi is Graeme but not sure. There are a few that look like it. It's not edible if it is a Freckled Dappling as it's poisonous.
Freckled Dapperling ?? That sounds like a Medieval disease caused by too much mead drinking ???
@@TAFishing I expect I've had that at some stage in my life then. I blame that Guy Friar Tuck!!
The mushroom looks like chicken of the woods variety. Which is suppost to taste like chicken... Though don't take my word for that as I'm no expert.
Don't worry...it won't be going in my frying pan !! Too risky.
Well done I know that where that stretch of river is I’m going to say where it is ? Is it free fishing on that stretch ?
I say at the start of the video.
Maybe he was watching a TA Fishing video on his phone
In that case I forgive him....Well worth missing a bite for.
Any more DIY coming on your fishing channel??😃
I have a few left...currently working on projects for Mike's channel..T A Outdoors..I think he had a new film up last night..check it out.
From a Aussie to you .you got dry rot in the gum and yes that is the next tree
G'Day..Dry rot in the gum ??...sounds like a trip to the dentist !!....thanks for the tip though ,it certainly seems like some sort of degeneration...I wonder if there are other species of trees that throw up a new shoot when the old one is nearing the final post.
It's sad to lose these environments, they won't come back!
Went there today in the exact same spot and caught my first brown 😆
sick, if you use PVA bags check @PVAPLUG on IG
my left ear feels left out
It only recorded in mono...my left ear is the same after the wife's given it a beating.
@@TAFishing ahahahaa still quality video though :)
Dryads Saddle it is edible when young gets woody when older
Hi Graeme - yep highly recommend you get that gum tree down before it does it on its own. I reckon it will drop in the summer. In Aus the termites would be hollowing that one out like billyoh.
It looks to me that the tree is going for the light.. I’d pick one of the new trunks that is straightest and lop the others off (they’ll keep coming). I’d also try to clear a space in the canopy above it so it shoots straight up.
Gum trees drop bark to get rid of pests, as part of the bushfire cycle and to suppress growth of competition around the tree.
So true it's no a sport if your looking at an app to find fish just go out and fish if you catch bonus
fungus i think could be DRYADS SADDLE ?
Was this the video you were editing that reminded you of the location of the camera pole ?
Yes,exactly that .
Hi Graeme, you need to get yourself a baseball cap with an action camera bracket mounted on the front (best of both worlds!). Can be bought from the usual suspects online. Seasons greetings to you and the family.
Greetings back and stay safe out there.
Hope you and your family are having a Merry Christmas.
I can't believe the pallet wood cabin is 5 years old now. It's lasted so well, even after being moved.
Thanks for all the great videos 👍
Yes,its solid enough, but we located in a sheltered spot and blocked it off the ground so that helps.
