    It’s not often that someone of this caliber, in his prime, offers free TH-cam lessons. It’s a great time to be a guitar player!

      As I was watching this video, I was thinking the exact same thing. When I was growing up, something like this would never have happened...or been possible. I get what Guthrie is explaining here...I just need to figure out a good way to practice and build this skill set.

      Guthrie Trapp I understand the chord shapes but do not understand when you say the scale around th chord shape, can you elaborate on that

    • @robertspicer421

      When you say "the scale" are you talking about the major scale?

      I wondered the same thing from other videos of Guthrie. In this one he says major pentatonic then goes on to discuss variations on the chords and what that does to the scale.

    • @cellardwellerproductions5125
      @cellardwellerproductions5125 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I may gentlemen.
      All the scales overlap each other.
      The Major you are talking about is right there, through any four finger span. Under or on top of, the chord you are playing.
      Take an ‘E’ shape at the Fifth fret. A Major. The Major scale starts right at the Fifth fret, 6 string. Or 7th fret D string. A minor pentatonic starts right there. The E pentatonic is there and so is the D. Different patterns to the same key, A. Under your four fingers. 1-4-5. Here’s a kicker.
      Any G scale plays right through here too. Major, minor, you name it. It’s the secret of the
      Sorcerers’ Handbook

    One of the most profound statements I’ve heard about guitar. “The chord is the ultimate foundation and then the pentatonic shapes over those chords are the framework. The scales and chromatic notes played over them are the icing on the cake”. Simply amazing Mr. Trapp

    Nice. This helped me make some nice connections with things I already knew. I learned my major scale positions using the 3 note per string method and can now see how the CAGED system fits into this. For anyone who this might help, here's my takeaway. The scale shape to play over a C chord shape is Lydian, The A shape is Mixolydian, G Shape is Aeolian, E is Locrian and D is Ionian. Suddenly all of those hours learning the scale positions feels like time well spent. Thanks Guthrie.

    Hey thank you for this video, what you said at 3:15 about the chords being the foundation and the scales being the frames made something click. I already knew all the chord shapes and so with a little bit of study I was able to see a pattern of how all the chord shapes wove into each other. Then in a day I was able to memorize the scale pattern of the C-shape chord and the scale pattern of the A-shape chord. I can now play the major scale on half the neck easily just by some quick memorization and understanding the scale to position relationship of the chord shapes! Thanks man!

    Thank you sooo much for sharing the secrets of how to play the guitar and traverse the neck. I have watched lots of videos on the caged system before but have found them incomplete. Your video is truly complete, it shows how to visualize the root notes in regards to the caged system, visualize the chords (chord 1,4,5 major, 2,3,6 minor, 7 diminished)in respect to the root notes. Your video shows how to visualize the scales associated with chords. To me your video is the foundation of what I have been searching for a long time. My son Kenzen says your video is awesome. Thanks again.

    Wow ! Thanks again, Guthrie. I like using Band in a Box to insert the chord progressions you are playing, find the right groove to play to and then practice the triads you are teaching. It makes practicing a lot more interesting for me and I think it helps the timing being able to play to a meter. I'm a lefty, so watching you play on the screen in front of me is like looking at my guitar neck in a mirror. I think that's an advantage for me. I was a full time bassist starting back in the 70's and now learning to play guitar. It feels good.

    Your idea of thinking of the mixolydian mode as the C dominant 7th scale is really interesting. If I’m trying to learn modes in that way related to chords what would you call the other modes. I’m going to be doing my homework for sure, but I would really want to know the right labels in this method before I go down some wrong roads. Thanks for the awesome lessons!

  • @au1098
    @au1098 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Guthrie Thanks! I finally understand to really make the caged system work you use the pentatonic pattern that fits the "CHORD SHAPE" as you move up the neck! Then using the major scale to flat the note that gets the result your looking for.Major 7, dominate 7,and minor, flat the 3rd or add the 2. Then the C F G triad exercise {is awesome}. You just gave me a better understanding of the guitar in 14 minutes than I've had my whole life! Thats not a great "little" lesson that is a great big BAD ASS LESSON! Thanks again!

    Thanks so much for the lesson. I have been watching you on the papastache videos and did get to see you at 'For Pete's Sake'. You are the person that finally explained how to see the fret board to me on a way I could understand! I will be forever in your debt. I am working my way through your Artist works lessons. To any that may read this post, if you want some help with learning the triads, I highly recommend the book 'A Common Sense Approach To Improvisation' by Joe Negri. He walks you through the triads on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th strings just as Guthrie was describing here. Guthrie's class and that book have my musical life!

    Eureka! Yes, if I see where all the 1s, 3s and 5s are in each caged chord. Then know what notes are in front of and behind those, then it is not very far before I'm back at a 1, 3 or 5 in the next caged chord. Finally, -- I get it -- Thanks Guthrie!

    I've been stuck playing in the same repartition for years on the guitar, and Guthrie has opened my eyes up and inspired me to learn again.. Thank you Guthrie for giving us your time and wealth of knowledge... Any chance of you heading down under any time?

    Thanks so much Guthrie. I could listen to you play for hours. You are a master craftsman at your instrument, and you are becoming a better and better teacher. I'm starting to see the big picture of what you're trying to show here - and more than that I believe you. There is so much junk on the internet it's hard to find the truth. I really feel you are sharing the correct path here. I never saw the usefulness of the CAGED system on the level you show it until now.

    Great video Guthrie. Are you playing the major scale over major chords and the minor scale over minor chords?
