- "Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Txt Pistols" Malcolm's McLaren's "Reflections on Learning" keynote presented at the Handheld Learning Conference 2009, London. Malcolm discusses his life, the challenges that authenticity faces within a karaoke culture and what we learn from failure. Recorded October 6th 2009. Contains mild references to adult themes and occasional use of adult language. www.learningwithoutfrontiers.com
I'm really impressed with his story telling ability's and his vocabulary and the cultural historical description of past times in the uk
One of the best lectures I've seen. There is no youth culture movement because all the corporations have everything sown up. Individual vision has been crushed underfoot and homogeneity is allowed to thrive. We need another McLaren.
JRHartly1984 or maybe another bill morris
No - we must be the McLarens!!
Reporting for duty. These pop culture leaders didn't go far enough they worked though corporations. The truth about the two great wars and modernity is hard to handle. The nazis made big money, and the winners from that racket run the big businesses of today.
The authentic is inevitable.
To think 6 months later he died, bless you Malcolm no ones perfect but ultimately you helped folk by inspiration and a lease of liberty freedom that people did not have without your encouragement & ideas, they know that deep down.
call6060842 i notices i. The video that he has trouble breathing at times during his lecture
wow that's amazing didn't realize it was that close
There need to be more people thinking like this in the world
For sure.Doon t be a sheep, think yourself what you wnat to do and how you want to live.
The refined yet wildly subversive Malcolm - what a gift this man was.
well he was a highly original thinker and put forth his individuality.
1 of the best TED speeches
This had me laughing!!! Never would have beleived that Malcom Maclern had had such an upbringing and background. Most interesting andstimulating and thought provoking.
You never read the " Confessions of Malcolm McLaren" ?
Always liked listening to Malcolms Bollocks he would of made a good prime minister in England in 2021,Rip malcolm.
All I know him from is his collaboration with the world's famous Supreme Team when they made Buffalo Gals, And he did quite a few other tracks too, had a whole album I believe with them
@KRA3030 - "Why the hell does he talk so slowly?"
Because he was old, giving a speech about an area outside his normal expertise, and about to die of mesothelioma. Too bad he didn't come with a cheat code, but thanks for proving his point. Your karaoke is calling you back, shoo.
A true artist. RIP young sir!
"He arrived at the venue tired and short of breath, which you can hear during his talk. We thought it was just a cold. Days later we discovered he was unwell and then soon diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos many years earlier. Some believe this exposure occurred when creating the shop on London's Kings Road referred to during his talk." -Ted
He was a heavy Smoker.
yes i would think the combination of cigarettes and being around clothing manufacturers would be the culprit
@@christopherdale8201 yes he even mentions going through a whole pack of French ciggies at Sandemans. Did that once and couldn't talk the following day!
I've read he was exposed by renovating his home shortly before he was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
"A tumor of the tissue that lines the lungs, stomach, heart, and other organs.
Cancerous (malignant) mesothelioma is the most common form, usually affecting the lungs."
Yes, I here because TED! The left channel it´s the only one working! Still a great talk! And the end is brilliant!
TED brought me here. Thanks for the upload.
i never thought i'd be inspired by anything that malcolm mclaren said
a real man, simply and true, I like his art of thinking
@foiblebear yeah i am mixing with more people, but sadly even uni wasn't stimulating enough for me. No one wanted to question the validity of research, no one wanted to contribute or debate the knowledge they were being presented, everyone (my age) was very apathetic. I got along well with the teachers at least haha. I will try book clubs or a philosophy group sounds like something i need to do. If it wasn't for the internet, i'd feel even worse so thank Christ for it. and thanks for commenting
Great talk. What a youtube find!
a fine man mrclaren is.a great loss in these times of sheep and dullness supreme.
r.i.p
@adsr303 : Yeah...thanks for the comment...I thought my right channel stopped working...
The world so desperately needs another McLaren or Warhol
Or the bloke that takes photos of the masses in the nude I forgot his last name it's Chester something.
No. We need whatever comes next. They're here. Support them.
This needs to be reupped ... I had to turn my speakers up to the max to hear the audio, and just barely at that.
All of the audio is in the left channel... and my left earbud is shot.
Dammit.
When I feel like I haven't been academic enough...I go to TED.
Good call, he's brilliant!
mono baby mono. mclaren was a fine gent.
Great philosophy.......
yes it is a good idea to reupload it, jus copy audio to left chanel, that is all, then it would be more enjoyible
And now we have a karaoke corona virus.
He doesn't look like he's only got months left...
THIS WINE!!
Roger Vadim. Check out his book 'Bardot Deneuve and Fonda'.
Very quiet audience.
@Ustp27
It is more likely to be at his "home"in the bathroom than the shop.
I understand what he's saying, but resent the equivalence made between "karaoke" and "inauthentic"... Karaoke isn't always authentic, but people who believe karaoke is inauthentic: [1] believe in a very simply idea of authenticity (an absolute divide between authentic and inauthentic), and [2] have likely not sung karaoke enough to have the authentic experience you can have singing your guts out (and it IS a messy creative experience if you push honestly yourself)
I'm only just learning about the sex pistols, it's an interesting story that's really changed the world we know today. What did he mean that the band was just a cynical marketing gimmick? I thought Johnny Rotten is a serious musician who writes good songs
Yeah, you've kind of missed the point. The point being: technical musicianship, expensive equipment, and experience was subordinate to youth, enthusiasm, and libido (energy plus sex). That was the magic formula that Malcolm recognised in Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, the early Beatles. That was what had become old, stale, and repetitive by 1975.
Punk was about a burst of fresh, young, creative potential. It blew up, left a massive mark, and reverberated for a long time. However, the trappings of punk were quickly commodified and corporatised.
For further info, I recommend you watch "bill drummond - the birth and death of punk", here on TH-cam.
You've already gotten an excellent response--I would also suggest McLaren's biography.
Watch his conan interview. He is, a cynic. Hate his karaoke ref. Free performance opportunity. Lifts shyness creates a moment creates an outlet for stress. I think english ppl believe they create music. Hes telling his life dtory jumping on politics, saying what gets him mad. Ha. Lovin it The mind behind the music. Rest in peace saddened
Hmm... I preferred Double Dutch if I'm honest.
the audio doesnt work?
@oliversisson wow, a bit harsh?
tough crowd
@lh526 Audio is left side only
Stewie Griffith lives...
🤣🤣🤣 I'll use this Quote he used. 'It was my job to make sure none of us would ever return to normality'.
36:04 roger bading?
Vadim.
Too fast too young too die
50:03
@adsr303 nah not for me
Un grande mi manca Malcolm❤❤❤
I think he is wrong about any kind of failure being better than success... yeah, sure it's great to not let failure deter you but don't settle for it
@damancandance1 your brain works slow
The ultimate sociopath convincing others that they are in fact the sociopaths...
Trump beats him by a clear country mile.
@@coastwalker101 his ideas were far better than anything that Trump could come up with the man is a real buffoon,Trump should be hung up on Marble arch intelligence has died because of people like that. Malcolm McLaren was a real raw form of intelligence.
Sex Pistols.
@FishyMoe Dear Fishy, are you a doctor, then?
holy shit this guy talks slow
Did you bother to listen to what he said or did you zone out on to your iPhone/ computer.
He hasn't always ...he's dying of Mesothelioma here...It's around twelve months from the first symptom where you die...With that in mind, the guy sounds great here!
Isn't he is criticizing exactly what he was peddling? He recognized and profitably exploited this "karaoke culture, ersatz society" to the fullest during his career.
He is actually dead now, there should be a note at the top: "the Late".
Cheers.
from,
del-boy.
I'm afraid I don't get the point of this talk at all.
Because you're not an artist
snoozer
It this Malcolm should do today? Before he made Sex Pistol great. Is this in the line of the situationist movement? But Malcom is dead now.
A brilliant liar!
so negative
More like a very real and honest person and he didn't speak shit
Why consider his speech negative...? It is his vision and it is real cos he is the one delivering his own vision. And you have your own experience, and so on...
I've heard my grandparents rant about this. It's just the usual mish-mash of superficial nostalgia and cliches. Want a struggle? Why don't you prepare quality speech with some original insight?
What utter shit you have spoken, this man had got it right,to me anyone born after 1990 is a moron and has little to no character and lacks real creativity and intelligence any wonder why the modern world is becoming more shithouse.
Read about him. He was a creative genius and a fuck up. He did revert a bit to type, here. But he was a great influence on music and art.
God it's hard to watch this knowing he's so Ill.

Information is not education.
It is a messy job being an artist. Art is not meant to make us comfortable.
