to be fair, it was a snippet into just one of the golf holes - for all we know there could've been lilliputtian sacrifices like big henry's on the regular or at least among the other factions _(which is all the more reason for them to stop competing so hard and putting their lives at risk for things like a darn sticker)_
I thought Big Henry was a commentary to deepen the anti-rivalry message of the episode. He gave his life so the miners could prove they were better than all the other mini-golf people.
It also helps that doing so implies that all the other golf people are also taking “being the best golf hole” seriously, and foreshadows they will eventually do something like tying Pacifica up.

Yeah, Matt was the one who directed this episode and Northwest Mystery Mansion (which won an award btw), so he did the bulk of Pacifica's character work in the show. I also heard that Matt was just really drawn to Pacifica's character in general, and took inspiration from her when he created Sasha (around the same time he decided to make Amphibia centered around themes of toxic friendship).
Amphibia was already on its way in 2018 when the box set came out. We should have taken the fact Matt wrote this as foreshadow for what Amphibia would end up being, lmao! *REMEMBER BIG HENRY!!*
big henry still continues to be a running joke in my family to this day. such a small and maybe irrelevant scene had my family actually rolling in laughter
One of my favorite moments from the show overall! It's so definitive of the Gravity Falls sense of humor: it's dark, it's cute, it's sad, it's silly, it feels high-stakes, it's just a game, and it's ultimately pointless anyway but hey you laughed didn't you? Truly one of the greatest animated shows ever.
When I watch the ep and the part of big Henry came up I thought of the song of Big Bad John, who was a miner who died underground by saving the other miners.
Saying you want to turn kids into corpses is one thing, especially given that almost anything goes in Gravity Falls. Realistically depicting a miner dying from the poisoning of gases released from mining for a thing is probably too detailed for some.
I mean, this is the same guy who wrote an episode into his kids show where the main characters encounter four serial murderers/cannibals who are shown to have a body count of over a hundred people who came to stay at their inn. Matt writes dark stuff
This moment was my first experience with the fact that good enough writers can toy with your heart just for the hell of it, and I was so shocked and indignant and couldn't pay attention to the next few minutes of the episode because I was laughing so hard. Truly a special scene.

Big Henry was meant to be a gag but it actually just made me cry I am really sensitive though. I was the kid who ripped up a book and threw it away if the dog died.
Big Henry probably got the best reaction out of me from this show and it got a good few, RIP in our hearts forever, may he inspire greatness and humility in us all.
I think what makes Big Henry land is that the ball people are shown to be overly drawn to theatre throughout the episode, so him having this pointlessly dramatic spotlight death in the span of 30 seconds plays to the idea of different ham performances playing out at once. I mean it's not like we haven't seen an alien crew commit to a blood oath and disintegrate themselves already, this is stageplay compared to that.
Should of figure Matt was behind this (thinking back to Amphibia final episode)! Granted this is still in my top three of funniest moment in the show (this, I Eat Kid and Sweet Maria at puppet Grunkle Stan explosive death). It was just so dark and random especially when the scene pan back to the kids pov as if nothing was happenning!
The reason I loved this show was because of how dark and twisted it was and as a kid the emotional or dark moments in our shows always stuck with me. I’m glad Alex never pulled back even though he had some hesitation

I think it's one of the single best jokes in Gravity Falls history. It turned an ordinary episode into probably one of my favorites. Just because of that one scene. I love the story of Steam Henry, and this was just a really dark and brutal take while simultaneously hilarious and absurd. What's great is it gets more brutal the funnier it gets. Like, your sense of humor and imagination is what carries the abject horror. I'm sure Alex would agree.
