When I first heard about this I thought it was odd that back then people would just stop by a stranger's house and feel comfortable having dinner and spending the night. Then I thought of Airbnb, Uber and Lyft and I guess the idea is kind of the same.

I usually don’t like wishing death on people, but I honestly hope it was the other dangers of the trail that got them. It honestly seems like justice for their victims, that they suffer all the downsides of each traveler’s journey all at once.
Laura Ingalls Wilder's dad joined one of those posse's to track them down, they were living on a farm nearby and would stop at the Bender's well sometimes for a drink when driving past. Luckily that didn't make into her kids books.
For all anyone knows, they could have escaped and been spotted somewhere, and they might have been executed by a vengeful mob. If only they had been tried and hanged at the gallows.
My family is from this area, Im totally obsessed with the Benders, the whole area is settled by people known as Volga-Germans...Russian Germans. We have a neat, storied history not unsimilar to what modern people consider gypsies. During the reign of Katherine the Great, first a German princess herself, they were invited to settle in Russian, but they were kept very much apart from Russian society and never intergrated. They became much more closed off to outsiders and developed a very closed culture. They later immigrated en masse to Kansas and parts of California, through Luxembourgh. They were secretive and untrusting, they avoided Western medicine well into the 1970's. I am descended from these new Kansas Germans, myself. It makes sense that the Benders would be also, and they fit the stereotypes. What wouldn't make as much sense would be the neighbors not sharing that same Volga-German culture and language.
I believe my ancestors that are not native American follow the same time line we eventually settled in Cherokee county Kansas the very extreme southeast corner
This is why I wouldn't want to live back then because it seemed like there were more killers that got away with killing you.
I always imagine people use to smell really bad back then because deodorant and things didn’t exist
Don't forget clean drinking water was very rare which is why most drank alcohol

What I find most disconcerting is the fact, they are labelled the "first" serial killer family, implying others followed in their footsteps.
