On that date 8/14/1993 Joshua Redman - sax 24 yrs old! b. 2/1/1969 Brad Mehldau - piano 22 yrs old! b. 8/23/1970 Brian Blade - drums 23 yrs old! b. 7/25/1970 Christian McBride - bass 21 yrs old! b. 5/31/1972
This is jazz history... A quarter of a century later and these are the heaviest of the jazz heavies. This is a band collegiate jazz programs should be teaching about near the end of the their jazz history sequence. They and others comprise the generation that revived young interest in jazz
All time favorite Jazz song of mine period! Been listening to it on repeat since couple of months now trying to play along drums :) Such an underrated band this. They are doing a Moodswing reunion in Rhode island Aug 4th....
I'm sure people on this concert were aware they were listening to incredible musicians, but they weren't aware that it's history in the making, that these guys would become the best of the best. Love how Christian McBride who is always the most suited up is the only one going casual here.
Last piece is called « the promise » and is a Coltrane reference. This music is so sooooo good. I heard them in those days and I’m sad I didn’t realize how great it was and they were.
That was an effing date. Everyone at a very high technical level. But what is really THE bonus is the astounding degree of maturity of these musicians. One may single out one of them to praise and one second later he/she will have to face the truth: everyone of them is as good as anyone of them. And how they play well tpgether! Mamma mia!
I thought the tune should of been called " Something I meant to say ". That's what came into my head anyway but folks I dig Joshua Redmond! He is ever so soulful and he's a great composer!
In my opinion, even though every good sax player must have heard some Dexter Gordon's work, at some point I realized that Joshua's style is more influenced by Sonny Rollins's work. Now Joshua is as great as them.
Nel precedente commento di pochi minuti fa ho dimenticato di scrivere della bravura, tecnica interpretativa e musicale di Brad Mehldau formidabile pianista jazz di formazione classica
Tristan Ethier : So many out there to mention - "monsters". Wayne Escoffery is smooth, swift and lethal; and so also was a 23-year-old Courtney Pine, and Andy Sheppard.
_[Lieutenant Dan looks at Joshua Redman]_ What's wrong with your lips? *Joshua Redman:* _I was born with big gums, sir._ *Lieutenant Daniel Taylor:* _Yeah, well, you better tuck that in. Gonna get that caught on a trip wire._
Tristan Ethier: Yeah! I have never met him in person; hope I shall some day - soon. He seems to be a very decent and scholarly human being - well-disciplined, if you will. Have you seen the friendly battle between him and James Carter? Awesome! Also, the conversations among him, Michael Brecker, Joe Levano, Dave Liebman and George Gergone - in spiritual tribute to John Coltrane. Would have liked to be there in person!

That’s absolutely insane, but true! Wowowow!!!!
These guys.... masters!
When you put it like that!!!! Damn!
Listen to Chris Potter at 16
Bunch of jazz babies!
And they're back together 27 years later!
This is jazz history... A quarter of a century later and these are the heaviest of the jazz heavies. This is a band collegiate jazz programs should be teaching about near the end of the their jazz history sequence. They and others comprise the generation that revived young interest in jazz
2020 and I am here for my class assignment on Redman quartet. We are already studying the legends.
my God... McBride swings so damn hard it doesn't matter who is soloing over that bass they will be forced to swing
But Josh Fricken Redman Bro!! I love Redman
I don't think basslines swing really...I think drummers do all the work to establish the sense of swing.
Elizabeth Clair you must not be a rhythm section player, study rhythms.
Jordan Johnson swing is just the compromise of where everyone feels the beat is.
@@Kiwi2375 If that's what you think than you don't a thing about what it means to swing.
Been listening to music for 60 years, this is the best concert I've ever heard in any genre. Astonishing. Thanks so much for posting.
Check out the show they did in Munich a few months later. I think it's even better. th-cam.com/play/PLDOx7nx0z2hinO56xfaoLzW5zgCmAOIhf.html
13:00 - Rejoice. One of my all time Joshua Redman's favorite. A big hug from Brazil, guys, and welldone!
All time favorite Jazz song of mine period! Been listening to it on repeat since couple of months now trying to play along drums :) Such an underrated band this. They are doing a Moodswing reunion in Rhode island Aug 4th....
This is one of the finest hour of Jazz I know ...
After 25yrs, they become jazz icons.
Brad is stupid good, sooo much feeling in this group
I'm sure people on this concert were aware they were listening to incredible musicians, but they weren't aware that it's history in the making, that these guys would become the best of the best.
Love how Christian McBride who is always the most suited up is the only one going casual here.
its shit
the growth in all these musicians from then to now is staggering!
Art Blakey trying to eat Christian Mcb's necklace
lol
Lmao
Hahaha
Hahaha, nothing like seeing Blade and Mehldau in suits that are way too big
Mike Hawk LOL. That was considered a good fit in 1993!
Nothing Like SEeing Christian McBride and Joshua Redman on stage together
Last piece is called « the promise » and is a Coltrane reference. This music is so sooooo good. I heard them in those days and I’m sad I didn’t realize how great it was and they were.

Second tune would later be titled Rejoice!
These cats are still great.I heard them back at that time & I was knocked on my ass!!! Josh&them are some serious brothers!!!!
Joshua is the new generation that still plays classic old style. Good.
My hat is off for this great quartet, jazz is indeed in good hands.
Wow that is a lot of young talent on stage here, fantastic Quartet throwing it down. Very nice upload thanks for sharing this.
this is an absolutely incredible performance
That was an effing date. Everyone at a very high technical level. But what is really THE bonus is the astounding degree of maturity of these musicians. One may single out one of them to praise and one second later he/she will have to face the truth: everyone of them is as good as anyone of them. And how they play well tpgether! Mamma mia!
Ain't that the truth! Couldn't pick a favourite member of the Quartet if I tried.
this performance is POWERFUL
Just fantastic cascade of music one of my favorite jazz bands and artists
brilliant, swinging music. great young guys of the future.
They sure were. No longer the “future”. The present. Some solid past too crazy enough.
They are so young on this concert!! (and playing great) o.O
I searched for this after listening to 5 mins of Kenny G.... needed some good medicine.
Omg RIP For those 5 minutes my friend
Wow it’s good to see this with their younger look.😊
Me encanta este concierto. Desde el lejano Chile disfrutando del buen jazz.!!
Brad looks like a teenager here! I love this early Joshua Redman.
They were dream team since then, since their early 20s....and they still are.
Some serious young brothas!!!! They come. To play!!!!
🙌🏾🙌🏾
damn i wish i could like this more than once haha
Amazing quartet!
What an amazing quartet!!
Wow!!!! Thank you..
El Jazz es un género musical para cuya interpretación se necesita músicos de excepción. Joshua Redman y su grupo son excepcionales.
Great band!
jazz can still swing!!!
Probably the best jazz quartet of all time right here.
Thanks
Love joshs sound!!!!!!!!!!
Very nice...The music is always good there at the Newport Beach Festival...Always nice...
I'm here after listening to RoundAgain. What a band!!
Brian fucking Blade man.
Great Real Music Thank You
I thought the tune should of been called " Something I meant to say ". That's what came into my head anyway but folks I dig Joshua Redmond! He is ever so soulful and he's a great composer!
THANKS !
THANK YOU
That sub-tone at 33:17 is so good.
Thank you !!!
The untitled song will be called "Rejoice" on the following album Moodswing... So the last song is not "Rejoice" !
What's the name of the last song
"The Promise" by John Coltrane.
@@adrianw6536 thank you my brotha!!!
I love the commentator in regards to Joshua, who just happens to be Dewey Redman's SON !!!!!!!!!! OH THAT GUY?! LOL forgot that little point.
My generation thinks of Dewey Redman as Joshua Redman's dad. How the tables turned.
Wish really is a gorgeous tune
Indeed it is. I am just now listening to this for the first time. Gorgeous indeed.
And An unbelievably great Redman Album as well
Higgins is incredible on Wish
Fabulous Joshua. I sometimes hear Dexter!
In my opinion, even though every good sax player must have heard some Dexter Gordon's work, at some point I realized that Joshua's style is more influenced by Sonny Rollins's work. Now Joshua is as great as them.
Whooaw ! Thanks for posting that !
Fantastic!
Full of joy
makes me laugh I was only on earth for about a month, when this went down
+Adebayo Fayemi its crazy to think that this happened over 20 years ago. All of these guys are total monsters in their own right now
This maybe my fav quartet
Perfect ! Real deal! Redman on top. Mehldau on top. McBride on top! Wow wow wowwwww
Blade on top as well!
Brian Blade is from Shreveport. Went to college in New Orleans....
Wunderbar 😅r
Brian Blade looks here 30 years older than nowadays...
너무 좋음..
grazie bellissimo
Has always been my favorite young saxophonist, but he is no longer young. I have all his albums. Brad Mehldau is so brilliant here.
👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💖💖💖💖💖💖
Wow wow!
Clicked when I saw baby Christian McBride in that thumbnail. That dude been funk nasty on the bass his whole life.
What a lineup! You think Joshua made Brad wear a jacket?

15:40 someone knows how this technique is called and how to do it? I love it :v Dexter Gordon did it a lot
this technique is calling "Alternate fingerings". Michael Brecker is probably the king of...
Santifaster R.S chris potter also
God Michael Brecker is a monster Along with Dexter And Redman Gosh
Oh man Chris Potter is a monster too
Tristan Ethier :
So many out there to mention - "monsters".
Wayne Escoffery is smooth, swift and lethal; and so also was a 23-year-old Courtney Pine, and Andy Sheppard.
@Jazz on MV
The last tune is not "Rejoice" by Joshua Redman, it's "The Promise" by John Coltrane.
Exactly. The untitled song #2 later will be named Rejoice.
8:13 he can't stop swinging
If you like Brian Blade then you most likely came here for 23:47
The last song is ''The Promise'' by John Coltrane, not ''Rejoice'' by Joshua!
mr Brad Mehldau on piano
Yeah, I like Art Blakey T-Shirt
24:05 - 🔥 Brian Blade burning
!
Christian with his Buhaina T-shirt 🙏
blade's cymbals and hi hat sound great. Old k's.
1:51 Start!
It's nice to hear Meldau playing normal
Yeah agreed
What is this "normal" you speak of? He's doing his own thing, now and always
TRIGGERED
Geniaaaaaal
_[Lieutenant Dan looks at Joshua Redman]_ What's wrong with your lips?
*Joshua Redman:* _I was born with big gums, sir._
*Lieutenant Daniel Taylor:* _Yeah, well, you better tuck that in. Gonna get that caught on a trip wire._
Derek Jeter on tenor
lol... it's like when people see Eric Marienthal and say, "Mel Gibson on alto!"
naaaah
@@LarryLenau or adam nussbaum and saying "Louis C.K. on drumset!"
Why did the cameraman focus on Brad's face?
So what's the name of the last song?
48:13
Esmeralda. The name. DI get a 0.01 regalia if you use the name? Smile. Great work.
Wasn't Joshua Redman 23-/24-years at the time of this performance?
Young Redman can really deposit "Organic Real Jazz" excellence; can he not?
He still can I LOVE REDMAN HES A BEAST
Tristan Ethier:
Yeah!
Would have liked to be there in person!
i have not seen that but i will check it out joshua redman is my favorite sax player so im sure itll be awesome
