The FINAL unauthorised VISITOR to BRISTOL ZOO

  • Bristol Zoo was a zoo in the city of Bristol in South West England. The zoo's stated mission was to "maintain and defend” biodiversity through breeding endangered species, conserving threatened species and habitats and promoting a wider understanding of the natural world".
The mammal collection at the zoo numbered around 300, representing 50 species, including: gorillas, Asiatic lions, goodfellow's tree-kangaroo, and red pandas. Among species on view at Bristol which are rare or absent in other UK zoos were Livingstone's fruit bats, aye ayes and quolls.
The zoo's Twilight Zone was the first of its kind when it opened, there were many other indoor exhibits including an insect and reptile house and aquarium meanwhile outside there were several aviaries and a seal and penguin enclosure. The lakes' islands were home to gorillas, golden lion tamarins, golden-headed lion tamarins, gibbons and squirrel monkeys.
The Zoo announced on 27 November 2020 that after more than 186 years its main centre in Clifton would close in 2022, with its animals moving to its Wild Place Project site close to the M5 motorway and the zoo reopening there in early 2024. In the event, it closed its gates for the last time on 3 September 2022
We can see that a week later and all the animals are still there and wondering where all the people went. Their lives are now lived out in a quiet and uncertain world.
My own question is who close the doors if the animals are still there... but thats just me. I hope you enjoy my slow and melancholic look at what is left and the ghostly lack of human life.

My understanding is that the animals will moved from Clifton to Wild Place project over the next couple of months. Not all the animals are going to Wild Place, some have gone to other zoo's around the country. There are still animal keepers and other staff at Clifton. Despite the closing, life will still go on behind the gates of Bristol Zoo Gardens while animals continue to be cared for ahead of their imminent departures to other zoos.

Its kinda shocking to see how hemmed in the zoo is with all the surrounding buildings and the small ground area it actually covers. Cant say Im a great fan of Zoos in general the principle of taking something from the wild to try making a profit from breeding and people gawping at animals that are clearly bored and stressed from living in such confined spaces. Great video all the same, thanks and good fortune for tommorow.

Heartbreaking watching that...and what a unusual place to have a zoo...I bet the animals had to put up with alot of grief and stress there.
And now being alone is sad...that lion was looking up at the drone,I couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor animal.

I was involved with Bristol Health Choir and one summer was invited to attend a Health summit garden party.. we had plenty of time to kill after rehearsals and before we were due to perform..and as everywhere including my favourite nocturnal house was shut the outdoor gophers/prairie's/averies and the odd monkey enclosures were open to walk around...I chose to sing softly to the Baboons, and although it's advised not to make eye contact as potential aggressor..we telepathically communicated..and felt their deep sadness and boredom.. I'll never forget that.. that was around 2013 hadn't been there since.. though nice school trip and family memories but seeing stir crazy polar bears pace around their unatural environments including the famous smelly elephant and giraffe house...still impregnated and etched on the brain..such sadness.. Paignton Zoo very much like Wildplace am yet to see..if ever?
Weirdly eerie this drone footage reminds me of an Auschwitz visit in around 16yrs ago .. potential empty buildings ..living trees n green but dead souless 😶 land
    Appropriate music ..yr own ?

The Greater Flamingos that are shown in your video now have a very nice new enclosure at Flamingo Land in Yorkshire, so if you want to see them thats where they are, they have plenty of room and look very happy. If you watch Theme Park Insanity or Coaster Dad they have some good footage of the flamingos on there Flamingo Land Vlogs, they have pride of place right in the centre of the zoo.

The old 13 year old Cheetah is at Yorkshire Wildlife Park and he has a huge enclosure, they are hoping to breed him with a female Cheetah from Ireland she also has a huge enclosure and there is also a third enclosure for them. Yorkshire Wildlife Park also has three Crowned Lemurs from Bristol Zoo, they have plenty of space in the Lemur enclosure with the Ringtails and the Red Belled Lemurs in the Woodland area where they have plenty of trees and also ropes and stumps to climb on at the lower area. All of the animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park have private areas that they can go to to get away from prying eyes if they want to both indoors and outdoors it is a very good modern Wildlife Park which puts the benefit of the animals first.
